Although it doesn't directly relate to FRED2, since the campaigns I want to download were made by FRED2 and I've received some good advice here I thought it would be appropriate to post here. (the question is basically in the title) I want to download a campaign made by some guy off the internet (http://www.ualberta.ca/~mwazny/homepage.html), where/which file, should I download it in.

Assuming you want to play Return to Sol (which, by the way, had a decent start but some rather weird and awkward plot twists):
- Download the campaign
- Open your \freespace2\ folder
- Create a subfolder. Call it something, like returntosol\
- Create a folder called data in \freespace2\returntosol\
- Extract the contents of the zip to \freespace2\returntosol\data\
- Select \returntosol\ as an active mod from the Launcher.
- Start the game and select the Return to Sol campaign from the Campaign Room
- Play.
That is the basic procedure for any mod. Always have each and every ****ing mod in its own subfolder. Then, if you want to use two or more mods simultaneously, familiarize yourself with mod.ini files. There is a jolly good article on that in Karajorma's FreeSpace FAQ.
As an interesting side note, the majority of user-made campaigns have been created with FRED. Apart from modelling, texturing and such, of course.

I did everything you said (except I was downloading the Incursion, not return to Sol) and it didn't work.
-
I basically couldn't see the campaign in the choose campaign feature of freespace 2
-
Ah. The Incursion was slightly different. You must place the three folders (missions, models, tables) to \freespace2\incursion\data\. I didn't check the Incursion first and if you followed my instructions, the folders are actually in \freespace2\incursion\Incursion\data\, which effectively prevents the game engine from using the stuff.
-
Wait, I don't get what I am supposed to change - the three folders are already within the file named "data" which is the only file within "incursion" which is in "freespace 2 files"
-
So you have \freespace2\incursion\data\ that has the folders missions, models and tables? Should work. As long as you select the \incursion\ folder as your mod using the MOD tab on the Launcher.

I shuffled stuff around and it WORKED! **** im excited.
