Alright, now another problem. I'm on mission 2, and right about the time they discover the asteroid with the base inside, the game shuts down, and I get the standard error message "Freespace has encountered an error and needs to close. We apologize for the inconvenience, bla bla bla."
I'm not sure if it does this after a certain amount of time, or just during that part of the mission. But please help. :sigh:

Hmm. There should be at least one fs2_open_3_6_10 build that ends up with "debug" in your \freespace2\ folder. Run it and when it crashes, find the fs2_open.log in your \freespace2\data\ folder. Then, post the log file here (preferrably as an attachment).
-
Um, okay. I actually wasn't using any build tho, I turned all the mods and stuff off.
-
FreeSpace lesson #26: A build is an executable program file starting with fs2_open_ and ending up with .exe. The builds are different versions of the game engine. There are typically two sorts of builds: the "normal" ones that you use for actually playing the game and the debug ones that you use for tracking bugs. Builds are not mods.

Alright, well, I tried using the debug thing, and now I get this:
Error: The required OpenGL extension 'GL_EXT_draw_range_elements' is not supported by your current driver version or graphics card.
File: gropenglextension.cpp
Line: 440
Call stack:
------------------------------------------------------------------
opengl_extensions_init() gr_opengl_init() gr_init() game_init() game_main() WinMain() WinMainCRTStartup() kernel32.dll 7c816fd7()
------------------------------------------------------------------
Even though I'm using D3D, because I installed OpenGL yesterday, but when I used that, the game runs at like 2 frames every second.
-
I also tried using the 3.6.9 debug, and then it tells me that it can't load all these different textures, like "hornettw" "stilletto" and stuff like that.

There's the problem. Update your graphics card's drivers.

Don't. Direct3D is evil.
I installed OpenGL yesterday
:wtf: Great Maker, not again...
You really don't "install" OpenGL nowadays, since it is a part of the graphics card drivers. So as I said, update the drivers. It will help.
-
Okay, really sorry for being a newbie, but
how do I do that.
-
Well, first you'll need to find out what graphics card you have. If you went wtf after that sentence, download GPU-Z (link in my signature) and run it. It will tell you stuff about your graphics card. Then, you'll need to travel to the graphics card manufacturer's (most likely Nvidia, ATI or Intel) website and find a set of new drivers for your particular graphics card. Download the new drivers. Uninstall the old ones using the Add/Remove Program function in the Control Panel. Boot the computer when advised to do so. Then, install the new drivers. Again, boot when promted. Voila. You now have new drivers and most, if not all, of your games will run better than ever.

Ok, I did that, went to the Intel website, and got lost. Help :(
Graphics card thingy : Intel 82845G/Gl

We meet again, Intel... :fistshake:

Look, I'm really confused....
The GPU-Z thing said that was the one that I already have... so why am I downloading it again?
-
You`re downloading an update for it.

Hmm.

Um, dude. How old is your computer? That's the best we can do. The newest Intel graphics drivers get along with OpenGL, but... damn. Seems like they don't provide them with this particular model.
Well, I guess you're ****ed. Use the 3.6.9 build and try to get along with Direct3D.
Or invest into a new computer. I'm guessing that since you have an Intel card, you are using a laptop.
-
Okay, okay okay, Once I update it, if that doesn't work, oh well then. I give up. :ick:
-
And no, actually, it's not a laptop :blah:
-
Really? Well, then you could probably fix things by investing into a new graphics card. Cheaper than getting a whole new rig.
(Psst. If you want to add something after posting, you can use the Modify button on the right side of the post instead of posting twice in a row.)
-
In that case you could probably buy even a cheap graphics card to get more performance than what you currently have.
-
It works! Hurrah!!!
...except for now I have these long streaks coming off of ships and stuff. But I'm pretty sure there's another post about that already.
Thanks again. :D
