while im in the middle of a mission, at around 5 minutes into it, the game screen freezes but everything else is still happening, and while i can actually play, the game is really laggy
-
1. What build?
2. System specs?
-
Yup, we can fix the problem if we just get some more information.

im not shure what you mean by what build but here are my specs: CPU Type- AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+... CPU speed-2.22GGHz... Total RAM-1024... and thats all i can find

As in, fs2_open_3_6_9.exe or something else?
For further system specs, try CPU-Z and GPU-Z (links in my signature).
And another things that popped to my mind, which one do you have selected on the Launcher's Video tab: OpenGL or Direct3D? OpenGL is the correct answer. And check the Audio/Joystick tab: you should have Generic Software selected.

I have the same problem but not all the time, just when I face asteroids fields, is there some feature I can turn off to make the asteroids less detailed??
-
I seem to recall you mentioning that you were using the 3.6.10 betas, correct? The asteroids are notorious for being resource-consuming. They should be fixed with the final release, but until then you have a couple of options: you can extract the asteroids from the 3.6.8 zetas or you can temporarily disable the MediaVPs when playing asteroid missions.

I've downloaded all the asteroids.tga & asteroids.dds files into data/maps but it's still the same.. dds are supposed to go in that folder as well? I know tga should.
The wiki page only says that dds is a new format of images so i pressumed it's path was that.
-
Yeah, I'd bet on \data\maps when talking about dds's. Of course, if you have the 3.6.8's, you can just check the vps to see what folder the dds's are in there.

it says that it doesnt know it's format and the path is missing, but it isnt working so it must be something else...
Ill see if I can check it out in the wiki

Hoping that other new people might actually search the forums... the original issue of this thread was caused by old graphics card drivers. Unsrurprisingly, updating the drivers fixed it.
