Title: FS2 keeps crashing, info included
Post by: Sk8erboy154 on July 17, 2008, 03:55:44 pm
ive been trying to figure out how to get this game to stop crashing all day an im stumped
ill play the game for about 2 min an no matter what im doing it will crash, i get the ' freespace has encounterd a problem a n needs to shut down, sry for the inconvinience' really annoying
always happens, an i have it installed to c:/games/freespace2 ive aslo tried the clearing the freespace2/data folder (not including directories), an ive run the debugger, before uninstall/reinstall the debugger brought up errors about colors, textures, and effects. after i reinstalled nothing like that came up again, but the crashes remained, after running debugger i have this info from the c:/games/freespace2/data the log app in data foldere an this is what i got, any way to get this game working would be a HUGE help, looks awsome. thx in advance.
p.s. i did look at other threads on this site but none of wich had my specific problem that i could find, so if there is another thread like mine, sry for the double thread

There's also the Modify button on each of your posts. You could have used that. Oh well.

Now, you have an (integrated) Intel graphics card, correct? Go to the Intel website and try to find the latest drivers for your card.

wow u responded fast, sry to keep u waiting
i have a dell inspiron 1100 laptop
i have a checker that says a couple drivers are out of date, do i need a particular one to run FS2?

-Mice and other pointing devices-
          HID-Compliant mouse
-Network Adapters-
           Broadcom 440 x 10/100 Integrated Controller
-System Devices-
           Intel(R) 82801DB PCI Bridge - 244E
           Intel(R) 82801DB LPC Interface Controller - 24C0
           Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Processor to I/O Controller - 2560
-IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers-
           Intel(R) 82801 DB Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 24CB
-Human Interface Devices-
           USB Human Interface Device

those are the ones that are out of date, im not paying for the automatic updater so i have to manually look them up one at a time on the web, so would any of thoes help?
and im not sure if im using an intel integrated

also i downloaded the windows build in ur signature, do i just put the 2 fred .exe's an the open, degugger all in the C:/games/freespace2 folder as is?

i believe my sound and video drivers are up to date

'z alright. We just tend to be fast around here.

and im not sure if im using an intel integrated
Oh, but I'm sure. The debug says so. Or an Intel card in any case.

also i downloaded the windows build in ur signature, do i just put the 2 fred .exe's an the open, degugger all in the C:/games/freespace2 folder as is?
That is the right location. After that you must use the Launcher to select whichever build you want to use from the folder. Which, in this case, would be the non-debug, fs2_open_3_6_10.

i believe my sound and video drivers are up to date
I believe otherwise. Download GPU-Z (link in my signature) and tell us what it says.

Post by: colecampbell666 on July 18, 2008, 02:39:36 pm
Yes, put all of those in your FS folder, and select which FSO build you want to use in the launcher.

You will need to update your graphics card driver, download GPU-Z from Lobo's signature, and run it. It will tell you what type of GPU (video card) you have, and then find the drivers at Intel.com.

Actually, you can get the drivers for your GPU here (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=865), but I'll leave the rest of that stuff up for future reference.

Yeah, but just so that we can be certain, what is the name of your card in the GPU-Z window?

The name of your graphics card, not the GPU-Z itself.

K, good. In that case, just follow the link cole posted. Download the new drivers. Uninstall the old ones from the Add/Remove Program section in the Control Panel. Then install the new ones. Reboot when prompted.

At what point does it freeze? If it happens in the beginning, during the splash screen, your firewall may be throwing in a query on whether it should allow or deny Internet access for FSO. In that case you can either play the game in windowed mode and answer to the query when it pops up, or you can just manually add FSO to the rules list of the firewall.

If this happens during the game, I'd advise you to check that you have OpenGL selected from the Launcher, under the Video tab.

If these instructions do not help, run the 3.6.10 debug build either up to the point when it crashes or until you get to the Main hall. Then, quit the game, find a file called fs2_open.log from \freespace2\data and post it as an attachment here (hint: click Additional Options when posting).

No, that would happen during the splash screen, before you even make the choice between single-player and multiplayer. But obviously that isn't the case right now.

Code: [Select]
Initializing OpenGL graphics device at 1024x768 with 32-bit color...
  Initializing WGL...
  Requested WGL Video values = R: 8, G: 8, B: 8, depth: 24, double-buffer: 1
  Actual WGL Video values    = R: 8, G: 8, B: 8, depth: 24, double-buffer: 1
  OpenGL Vendor     : Intel
  OpenGL Renderer   : Intel 845G
  OpenGL Version    : 1.3.0 - Build 4.14.10.4342

You seem to have OpenGL selected. And 32bit colours, which is also good. I'm more concerned about the OpenGL version. I'd assume it would be higher now, after the driver update. But no. Might be unrelated.

The following trick worked earlier today so let's try it again: if you have a folder called mediavps inside \freespace2\, and if it has files in it, open the Launcher, open the MOD tab and select the \mediavps\ folder as your mod.

If that doesn't help, do the unspeakable thing and switch from OpenGL to Direct3D.

No.

If you get a weird square on half of the screen, delete \data\cache. If you are using the MediaVPs, delete \mediavps\data\cache.

hmm, inside my mediavp/data/  there is no cache folder, an inside the mediavp there is no .exe file to run fs2,  i have delted everything in the data/cache folder an about to try it, if it still doesnt work im going to try it in direct x

itz not a weird square itz like a black/grey triangel that covers a third of the screen

well off to try it, gunna give results in a sec

There shouldn't be an .EXE in \MVPs. In the launcher, under the MOD tab, you select the "mediavps" folder (or any mod folder) to activate the mod files within. The MediaVPs are enhanced graphics.

File: Ship.cpp
Line: 5624

Call stack:
------------------------------------------------------------------
    ship_set()    ship_create()    parse_create_object_sub()    parse_create_object()    parse_wing_create_ships()    post_process_ships_wings()    post_process_mission()    parse_mission()    parse_main()    mission_load()    game_start_mission()    game_enter_state()    gameseq_set_state()    game_process_event()    gameseq_process_events()------------------------------------------------------------------

i have a debug report on both debuggs in openGL and directX mode (attached)

:wtf: There should be at least MOD and No MOD buttons. Below are Website and Forum, but they might be greyed out depending on the selected mod.

Please don't post the errors you get, they are useless to us.

Also, get launcher 5.5d from my sig, and re[place the old one with it.
