Title: "Freespace2/Fred2 cannot be run from a drive root directory!"
Post by: matt2k9 on July 20, 2008, 09:47:47 pm
Ok So I moved all the files to a different directory. Still the same problem. Then I searched the forum. Then I still couldnt figure it out.

So Now I ask you guys what is the deal here. What is the "launcher"? I have clicked on every single icon, configured my system, everything and I always get this fred 2 directory message.

Also is there a download for freespace 1? Is it included in this?

OH yeah I installed the Turey link that is stickied in this forum.

Please help I'm trying to show this game to my little brother and this is driving me bonkers.

Basically I would love for someone to just post me a link that easily installs and runs one or both games. That would be awesome at this point. I'm not a coputer geek or anything so this stuff is driving me upside the wall.

Get rid of what you have or move it to c:\games\freespace2 then run the installer in the above link.  When finished run launcher.exe

Since it is already a bit illegal to have FS2 in it, FS1 is not included. But not to worry. The Installer can download FSPort. FSPort is a mod for FS2/FSO that allows you to play the FS1 campaign and Silent Threat with the FS2/FSO engine. Nothing wrong with that.

That would be Turey's Installer. It's as easy as it can get. I personally think that it is only a good thing if people have to actually think and read instead of hitting Next a few times.

You really should have Launcher.exe there. But if you are sure that you don't have it, download it manually (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/Launcher55d.rar).

And we thank you. The servers are also sure to be delighted to get involved in an extra download.

And your problem is that you pasted the files after you downloaded them. The Launcher and the .EXE have to be in the same folder, and the Launcher was still looking for the .EXE in the old folder, which is impossible.

To fix that, IIRC you'd have to delete the launcher6.ini so that it can re-detect the location of the files.

Or edit it by hand (despite what the warning says).

Or reselect the .EXE in the launcher and click "Apply".
