Title: two questions ..
Post by: spaceman on July 22, 2008, 05:09:39 pm
Hi all,
I have just started playing FS for first time after a successfull download thru Turey's FSO; so big thanks first to Turey for his awesome installer

and now; I 'em curious to know whether can I control any ship in freespace .. like cargo, capital or mother ships or only fighters ?
and does the planet and nebulae textures remain same or are they interactive .. like can you  fly to a planet or be in the nebulae ?

that would be very amazing if possible but I guess its not.. or is it?

Thanks

In short, no. There have been attempts to modify the game to make this possible, but very few of them have succeeded in being as fun as flying a fighter.

They remain the same.

Planets/nebulae are backgrounds, and never increase or diminish in size. You can however make a model of a planet, and place it in the mission for story purposes/blowing it up. This was done in Inferno.

Well, I'd think flying cargo would be fun

Yeah, they'd be good against the NTF.

There were "actual" planets in Cardinal Spear, too.

However, "Actual" planets don't look as good due to the lighting...

seems not possible but it would be equally fun if mother ships or cargo ships can be controlled where in you can command to send fighters outside as needed

Yeah, that would be fun, but the attempts which have been made thus far are more or less piloting an extremely unmaneuverable craft with no control of your weaponry, meaning you had no control over any of the game except where you were moving (which was in itself a slow process because capital ships are so much slower than fighters).
