Title: News messing up the forum?
Post by: FUBAR-BDHR on July 24, 2008, 11:50:38 pm
I have the forum book marked so to my surprise when I came straight here I was greeted with several lines of news in the search bar plus the same news in the normal spot.  Problem or intended?

BTW wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't 5 lines long.

Well, you'd think it was intended - it involves you possibly getting some money! ;)

Although it could be a new feature, which I wouldn't mind unless it began to get over 5 or 6 lines...

Why do we have only the one item on the news bar? It's distracting, but that would be acceptable if it at least served a purpose by flicking from item to item, but with it just locked onto one news post, it's annoying.

[EDIT]Wha... it's not even a news post? Why the hell is it up there?  :wtf:

That's what I want to know. It's old news, not even a news item posted in the regular way as far as I can tell, being given the most prominent location on the forum. No other campaigns are given that kind of prominence, and the two most recent news items (one a request for help on a potentially very useful modding tool and the other the free release of an established modding tool deserve the space far more, and there are several other projects who are also looking for help (I know at least one very major one is as I've been directly contacted) who deserve the space surely at least equally. So why is this project given the most prominent advertising on the forum?

I have my suspicions, but I'd like to hear it from an official source.

That block of news looks strange and annoying to me too, especially since it appears on every page of the forum. At the most, this sort of thing should be put in the highlights section.

Hmm. "he's willing to pay good money to get it done!" Are those the magic words? Good money?

"Good money" meaning he'll pay $25 to $50 to the modeller for every model converted.

I posted this as news because Yoseph has been trying to get his campaign off the ground since, like, 2004, or something.  He's got nearly everything done, the only thing he needs help with is getting his models into FS2 -- which is only a single step in the overall process of creating a campaign.

EOTP has had "regular" news posts in the past -- though admittedly not recently -- and none of them have really worked.  So I figured a big, prominent news post would grab people's attention.  There's no ulterior motive here; it's exactly what it looks like.

My feelings on the mod itself are well known, so I'll leave aside any mention of the four years issue.

The big news post, however, is kinda disruptive. It takes up a lot of space - it's most significantly annoying on my Eee pc - I can't see even the first post in a thread without scrolling, which is often enough to give me a gist of a thread, see if it's interesting/explain the title. I wouldn't object if we were in a funding drive or whatever, but for a campaign (something that news bar hasn't been used for in the past) it's excessive. If you want to get attention to the project, give him a highlight or something like CP said.

now i know what the problem is, i have no more problem. its not everyday you see someone other then your typical expert modders being mentioned for something, especially like this.

please dont take this the wrong way, but it's always the biggest and best that grab all the best, why not give some room for the guy who needs the attention but never gets the deserved recognition. when you give something like for example a babylon project some attention the chances are it will always be their and never disappear causing other projects to fall by the wayside now i think that is overkill and too much.

cmon give this guy a chance to get his project working we all had our good and down sides, and this guy according to goober5000 has been out of luck for 4 years! and no one else here has had 4 years worth of bad luck, he deserves the space that goober has given him.

no one else here has had 4 years worth of bad luck

not to simplify his work over the past 4 years, but there's been a hell of a lot more campaigns working for far far longer with equal hardships

i personally have an issue with real money coming into play with an open source game with a GPL, but that's no reason to dissuade it, other than it is a rather annoyingly located advert

(what happened to the hlp2.0 rotating news display that was linked to the website that disappeared yonks ago?)

i never said that anyone else cant do what yoseph did, as long as the admin staff agrees to help out then you have no problem. i am also sure if you ask around you would be able to find peoplewho are willing to help you out from their own free time, but i didn't understand what you meant by the money issue. So long as the money issue is really relevant otherwise please dont go to all that trouble telling us.

I don't have any problem with what Yoseph is doing. It's nice of him that he is willing to pay for something like that. The issue is the big news post which is frankly just cluttering the forum, especially since it appears on every single page.

It's not as bad on a wide screen but when you go back to a regular monitor it seems to just take over.  Can you at least reduce the font to normal?

How about something a little more condensed:
News: Yoseph's looking for modelers for his Echoes of the Past campaign.  This is not your run-of-the-mill newbie campaign here; the story, mission design, and professionally composed music are ready to go.  All he needs is somebody(s)  to convert his ships from 3DS Max format to POF format.  Best of all, he's willing to pay money to get it done!  PM him or read this thread for more info.

Or even better:
Wanted:  3DS Max to POF model conversions.  Reward offered per model.  Contact Yoseph.

Heh, you should have seen the two paragraphs of text that Yoseph originally had. :D

But fair enough.  It's been up a few days by this point.  I'll change it to FUBAR-BDHR's version.  In any case I'll take it down by the end of the week.

No offence Black Wolf, but how can you stand using that little computer that seems to have the power of 400mHz (from what I can remember off the top of my head)?

As for the change, it can stay for as long as Yoseph wants as far as I'm concerned - it's only clutterful when in bold or longer than 5 lines.

Thanks.  Looks a lot better now and you have 2 up instead of one.  One slight change would make it even better.  Remove one word form the second one and it would eliminate one whole line from the main page news.  I'm thinking "model" could be removed as it's a little redundant since anyone converting would know that.

BTW maybe I cought the post when you were first posting it.  It took up the whole screen.  Of course it could have also been a page load error but either way it was like what the heck is this.
