Title: Mines? (the exploding kind)

I was messing around and decide to make a mine.  I did this by retabling a sentry.  I took out the weapons and gave it a large explosion and 1 hp so it'll blow up on impact with anything.  I was wonering if there was a flag to make them detonate when a hostile gets within X distance.  I know this can be done with SEXPs, but it would take a long time to make a decent mine feild like that.

I made a minefield once by making them all "fighters", giving them 1 hp, and setting them to kamikaze in FRED. With the 5m/s of speed I gave them, they could maneuvre themselves into a ship, but it was fairly imperceptible. Mine were designed for anti-cruiser and above though, and were useless against fighters.

I'd support something like this being added to the asteroids editor, to create minefields with options like "detonate any" or "detonate <team>" but I think there's enough on their plates right now.

That is very clever. :nod: If they were untargettable as well that would be an awesome mission.

Use SEXPs and special explosion. Works a lot nicer than the 1-hp thing, since you can actually get the mines to blow up harder if something gets close, rather than if they were shot, plus, you could also make proximity mines, and mines that actually take a few hits.

Its not very hard to do, I guess I cold do it and give you the tbl  entry anyway.  But I'm feeling very lazy right now (I just got up) .  I'll get back to you on it.

Using the OP method, would it not be possible then to have the mines shoot at any attackers,
then detonate via proximity?

Just wondering offhandedly as this is something coming up I'll need to put together.

    I wonder if it would be possible to use the Asteroid field as some sort of minefield thing. But replace the asteroids with some small mines that aren't visible until they launch themselves on a slightly faster collision course with the ship. So-called Captor mines, are dormant until a target comes within range and then they activate and fly towards it.  So have the mines larger than a bomb, but much smaller than an asteroid field. Though, not sure how balanced that would be. Would depend upon the power of the mines.

Make a mine with an invisible textured outer sphere, but make it so that you could collide with this invisible sphere? If you time the explosion right it'll just explode before the player realizes he has hit anything?

Then just give it one hp, etc. Only difference is it would appear to explode from 50 meters away (even though you've just collided with it).
