Title: campaign progress is not saved

i have follow the steps in installing fso and i can get the game running, however, my campaign progress will not save. The game has saved my pilot and settings, but if i so much as go back to the title screen(hangar, whatever you want to call it.) The next time i click continue campaign, I start at the briefing before the first training mission. Also, depending on the user on the computer i use, i get several errors in the launcher,"Failed to set graphics mode"and basically "failed to set" everything in the graphics menu. And yet the game still starts, but with the same save problem.

I can only stand to be welcomed to Vega so many times.

I'm guessing you have FSO installed to either your desktop or to My Documents. Move it somewhere else. C:\Games\FreeSpace2\ is a good option.

i didn't know that where you install it in certain places changes the way the game works. i always assumed installing stuff in any place on your hdd was not important.

Ah, but My Documents and the desktop are special places in Wind'ohs, since they are directly affected by the user accounts. Or something. The details evade me (again), but for some reason those locations interfere with FreeSpace, particularly the pilot files. IF the player can somehow create the pilot in the first place, the stats won't save. I've seen a few of these cases already.

ah, yes, that would be it, its under my pictures( don't ask me why) Which would explain why the Babylon project saved, because its  in the c drive.
Thanks a lot, mission 1 was starting to get boring.

i accidentaly installed it in my pictures and was too lazy to move it.

In that case, if you want to avoid issues with FreeSpace and avoid people messing around with it, move it to C:\QuantumPhysicsLiteratureAndReference\Hawking\.
