I recently upgraded my default copy of mediavps to the Zeta release. All in all, it works well, but has two major problems. The shield and smoke effects (though not the damage flame on capital ships and ship trails) all appear inside a reddish black box that is presumably meant to be transparent when rendered.
What do I need to do to fix this? Did I delete a wrong file, and if I did, where an I get it/ what is it?

OpenGL (Launcher's Video tab) and jpg/tga textures (Launcher's Features tab).
-
I already have it set on OpenGL, and in .9 tga/jpg is on, still jacked up, .10 does it auto and it's still jacked up.

Hmm. Delete \mediavps\data\cache\. And possibly \freespace2\data\cache\. Are drivers up to date? Did you also get the patch vps (the ones starting with mp-710)?
-
Caches have been wiped already.
I don't know about the patch, I used the installer that auto- downloads everything online.
I installed it (into the directory that had my reatil copy of FS2)
Ran it with whaever MediaVPs it was (really low res, but nice features)
Tried upgrading it to Zeta
Boxs showed up
Cleared caches and launcher .conf so it would realise it was in a differant mode.

1. If you used the Installer, you should have the patches, but it doesn't hurt to check. So, chekc if you have files starting with mp-710 anywhere near \freespace2\.
2. It is commonly appreciated to have any and all mods in their own subdirectories. So, move the MediaVPs (files starting with either mv_ or mp-710) to \freespace2\mediavps\. Then, use the Launcher to select the \mediavps\ folder as your mod.
3. If you had older MediaVPs, did you remove them or move them away? You should have.
4. Deleting launcher6.ini shouldn't affect this issue in any way.

So if you used the installer over an old install, that means that the old files are still there. Delete the old MVPs.
-
Yeah, it sounds like you need the 710 patchs, and if you have them, then do as Cole said and clean out any old mediavps in your main FS2 directory.

Run a debug build, and then post fs2_open.log from \data.
