Title: Voice Acting Blue Planet
Post by: Rian on August 02, 2008, 01:18:44 pm
Now looking for people to help voice-act Darius’ campaign Blue Planet: Age of Aquarius. If you’re interested, please send samples to me or General Battuta. (or post them here, I suppose.)

If you’re interested in a particular role, please send samples specific to the role so we know what you can do. Unfortunately, scripts are not yet available for the minor or supporting characters, so you'll have to ad-lib (or, if you're dedicated, pull a line from Blue Planet.)

Scripts will be sent to the actors when they’re available.

Cast:

(CAST) Samuel Bei Cheow Keng: Male, 30’s. Pearl River Delta/Hong Kong accent (optional), otherwise no specific accent required
Quote
“I had family in Guangzhou, Alpha 3. I understand how you feel. But what can we do about it? All we can do is find out who was responsible for this catastrophe.”

“Alpha wing, for the moment we're stuck here until reinforcements arrive. Fight for your very lives, each one of you!”

(CAST) Phillip Corey: Male, 20-30’s. British Received Pronounciation accent (optional) otherwise no specific accent required. (If Ransom Arceihn would be willing to play this role, that would be perfect.)
Quote
“Commander Bei is right, Taylor. We need to gather information to find out who did this. I'm calibrating my sensors to search for debris other than Terran. These Aurora sensor modules ought to be good for something.”

“Doesn't the word 'tradition' mean anything to you, Taylor? This is the standard GTVA procedure for initiating diplomatic contact with a new faction. We've always been doing this.”

(CAST) Mina Taylor
: Female, 20’s. West Coast American accent.
Quote
“Holy crap! What the hell happened to Earth? Are we even AT Earth?”

“I don't remember there being an Orion hulk in this system...hell, I don't remember there being NOBODY in this system. Where the hell are we?”

“Sweet fortune. This is it. This is the end.”

Admiral Bei Wen Jian: Male, 60’s. Pearl River Delta/Hong Kong accent.
(CAST) Esmar Al’Fadil: Male, 30-40’s. Middle-Eastern accent.
GTD Orestes comms officer: Male. No specific accent required.
(CAST) GTD Temeraire comms officer: Female. No specific accent required.
Captain Katashi Iwakura: Male, 30-40’s. Japanese accent.
(CAST) Tell: Male, 30’s. No specific accent required.
(CAST) Rear Admiral Carey: Female, 40-50’s. No specific accent required.
(CAST) GTD Sanctuary comms officer: Female. Eastern European/Russian accent.
Minor ships comms officer: Male. No specific accent required.
(CAST) Lieutenant Nehru: Male, 20-30’s. Indian accent.

NB: A good example of a cultured Pearl River Delta accent would be Chin Han’s performance in Dark Knight (Mr Lau), or the female Chinese aide voiceover/Agent Black Lotus in C&C Generals.

If you’ve got samples, we want them. We’re not going to cast anyone without hearing him/her first. It’s easiest if you send them to us or post them here so we don’t have to go hunting for them.

We really need someone with acting skills to play Samuel Bei. He's going to be the most difficult and most important character.

The accent is totally optional.

Post by: Colonol Dekker on August 11, 2008, 02:06:27 am
It'd help if it matched his father though, right?
Title: Re: Voice Acting Blue Planet
Post by: General Battuta on August 11, 2008, 06:26:25 am
Since his father has far fewer lines, it'd be easier to get the father to match the son. But yes, you're definitely right.
Title: Re: Voice Acting Blue Planet
Post by: Molybdenum on August 23, 2008, 05:05:35 am
I could try doing some lines.

I have no specific accent(well maybe a bit "Eastern European" since I am from Poland) but I can possibly fake one if needed.

My voice is deep and clear, Good for command or an officer type.

Awesome, thanks! We'll check the samples out.

Once Silent Threat: Reborn is released, Goob has suggested he might share some of his voice-acting sources, which are at a semiprofessional or professional level. With luck, this'll make our job significantly easier.

I tried the GTD Temeraire. It's tough for me to fake a woman's voice. I used Audacity to modify the pitch.

Temeraire (http://media.putfile.com/Temeraire-audition)

Also tried Tell.

This can help me pass the time until War in Heaven is released.

Post by: General Battuta on August 27, 2008, 09:32:31 am
I'm sorry, azile, but there's too much microphone hiss -- and some noticeable pop -- for us to use those.

We also have plenty of female voice talent available, so don't worry about modifying your voice.

However, Commander Tell was pretty good (at least by my own personal judgment.) If you get a better microphone, try recording some more samples.
Title: Re: Voice Acting Blue Planet
Post by: azile0 on August 27, 2008, 12:20:21 pm
Alright. I think that Audacity has some noise suppression, so don't count me out yet.

Edit: Alright, I used some voice suppression and altered the volume, so it sounds much cleaner. Attached.

Post by: General Battuta on August 27, 2008, 05:55:17 pm
Huh...I don't know what's going on, but there's a kind of echo, and the sound wasn't actually much clearer. The volume on the sample seemed really low.

If you don't have the gear, don't worry about it, but if you feel like you can get one that's crisp, keep on trying!

Is the Vishnans voices going to be sort off . . . echoey and mystic-like?  It suits their character.

... accompanied by a proper amount of those spooky background whispers?
Title: Re: Voice Acting Blue Planet
Post by: General Battuta on August 28, 2008, 09:43:17 am
That's up to Darius. For now we're planning to stick with just the whispers, but if we can find a credible voice actor and apply proper effects, it might work out. I wouldn't object if they sounded like Protoss or something similar.

Post by: azile0 on August 29, 2008, 01:38:28 am
Well, I can't do any more samples if I tried, because my dog decided to pee on the microphone. It must have shorted something out, because it doesn't record any noise. I'll just spend another $20 on a good microphone.

I got in contact with a musician who was interested in vocoding the Vishnan effects. Else I've got the tools for it as well and could give it a shot. I had envisioned them at one point as sounding like the Celareons from Frontier Wars.

Rest of the script coming soon.

:DI'd suggest using the Voice Acting Manager in FRED.

You should also use a naming convention for all files(you can choose and manage it with the VAM). :)

Thanks for the samples, Getter. Unfortunately, the remaining unfilled roles mostly require specific accents, so I’m not sure we’ll be able to use you. We appreciate your interest, though!

I'm Aussie but people seem to think I have a British Accent, but I'll take whatever roles need filling that don't require accents (I can record another sample if the ones ive provided are **** quality etc)

Yeah I'll take a breath or two and redo them, I think I did both of those lines in one breath
Title: Re: Voice Acting Blue Planet
Post by: Dilmah G on November 14, 2008, 04:18:41 am
Okay uploading a few more files now, I took a few more breathes but my mike seems to be screwing up, I get some intermittent ringing or static (not sure if they're noticeable in the clips though), either that or Audacity playing up (I haven't got the hang of goldwave yet). Same link as before for samples

If you still need a British accent I can add my samples and I'm near 20 (later this month in fact!) when I find time, I'll record for the Phillip Corey part. In the mean time, I've recorded lines from another mod and uploaded them here http://www.4shared.com/dir/10650277/80c4ab68/sharing.html you can preview that until I record the lines here.

All right, a brief update on this VA effort.

We've got the lines for Mina Taylor recorded (as before) and I'm very satisfied with the outcome.

Corey and Sam are both cast, but recording's in progress. Most of the minor slots are still open, but, to be honest, we're not putting a huge priority on them until we have full scripts. As I've said before, I'd rather have Darius working on War in Heaven than generating scripts for a re-release.

I like your accent and delivery, Something, but the sound quality on those clips is too low for us to use. (Compare it to the Freespace 2 voice acting, for example.) Is it maybe the site you have them posted on? Or could you get access to a better microphone?
Title: Re: Voice Acting Blue Planet
Post by: Something on December 23, 2008, 06:50:53 pm
Actually, I ordered a  headset + noise cancelling Mic. Hopefully, the NC mic and a little post recording clean up will produce acceptable results.

I'll be getting it as a Christmas present, so you wont have to wait long for new stuff. Glad you liked what you heard, I'll try harder to improve!

*EDIT* I've gotten the new headset and I've made a new folder with the recording I've done with it, which is here http://www.4shared.com/dir/11343107/14ac9faf/Updated__EACW.html *EDIT*

We've just finished recording lines for the GTD Temeraire comms officer. We used some of Goob's favorite voice talent from the ST:R auditions, and it came out (in my opinion) fantastic -- she sounds a bit like Judy Dench. It's an interesting contrast to Mina Taylor, who's got a very young, enthusiastic sound.

Something, I actually rather like your new samples. We don't have too many major roles left open, but hopefully I can get some wingmen chatter for you.

The prospect of voice-acting for this campaign interests me greatly. As such, I'm going to polish up my voice so that I can partake in a few samples of my own. I've only voice-acted once before, but I've done some stage acting and I can't say that this change is too different. I just don't have to take the time to memorize physical cues, that's all.

I'm usually available on the evenings on a messenger program, provided the interest is there. PM me if you want to know more.

Hows it going people?
Sad to say I can't help, can't get a good sample. Will continue to work on it if possible, and maybe you can find me a role. May be some time before I get my inbuilt mike fixed up though.

I haven't done any voiceacting for FreeSpace yet (go ahead and beat the newb ) but I have done one (a single... feel free to hit the noob again) failed sample.

Well yet another most hated question for you, but hows progress and how long more will this take before BP is fully voiceacted?

Well from a quote of Goober,

The voice pack is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.  Several missions virtually require it.  And it also delayed the release by about two years, so we think it's well worth waiting for. :)

The entire voice-acting might just take that long although I really hope I don't turn 14 when it is finally done.  ;)

We're moving along. Corey is nearly done, Al'Fadil is cast, we have multiple people working on Samuel Bei. We still need an elder Bei and a few minor roles, but we're closing in on it.

I anticipate six more months to a year, but that's just a wild guess. Probably longer.

"MAY DAY! MAY DAY! This is the GTD Remington, we're under attack by unknown hostiles, request immediate assistance!"

and/or

"Alright Lions, I'm counting one-no two, two Rakshasa's at twelve o'clock with a fighter escort. Beta Wing, neutralise the AAA on those cruisers or we'll be ripped to shreds! Alpha Wing, follow me in- GO! GO! GO!"

Thanks for the samples, Renegade Paladin. A couple of them have quite a bit of background noise – you might want to try to clean those up. I'm not sure if we'll be able to use you or not, but we'll keep you in mind.

KappaWing2.wav is the only one I hear background noise on.  Not sure where that was coming from.

I'm going to record new samples; I was keeping my voice too low on a couple of them because I didn't want the other people in the house to wander in wondering who I was talking to.     I'm home alone right now, so I should be able to get better ones.

Alright, I've finally got my lines in and ready. I needed to run through the campaign again and hand copy most of the lines outright, but with work, I've come up with an array of selections. I've attempted to make them easier to choose between, considering I wasn't able to narrow the choices down much further than this. Feedback would be much appreciated to help better myself.

Keep in mind that I'm trying for the position of the GTD Orestes Communications Officer when you listen to these. Failing that, I'll fill in for some of the minor comms officers if I have to.

Happy to record any 'incidentals' that are still needed - comms officers and other single-liners.

Attached is a quick snippet - natural voice without any emphasis.

If you can email/PM me a set of lines I can turn them around quite quickly and you can use what fits.

Let me know what peak and mean dBA you need to match levels, and how much preroll/postroll makes sense and I'll do first cut editing before sending them out.

Hey folks. (Double post, I know.)

If you have submitted an audition and not received an explicit response, please bother me (preferably with resubmitted audio.) I'll be prompt this time.

We have currently completed voice acting work for Corey, Taylor, the Temeraire comms officer, Al'Fadil, and Lieutenant Nehru (more or less). We are waiting on Rear Admiral Carey and the Sanctuary to complete their roles.

We've cast a few different people as Sam. Mostly, we're waiting on responses.

We're also waiting on complete AoA scripts to do the minor roles. I think I'm going to generate these myself, since Darius is really busy with RL and War in Heaven. (I finally have access to FRED!)

Because both Rian and I are quite busy, progress has been slow, but we are over the hump in terms of casting (most) of the major roles. Sam himself and Sam's father are the big ones remaining.

Here's a few incidentals.

Let me know if they are at sensible levels, and if there are any other lines you'd like.
- I can export to OGG Vorbis or the raw WAV if preferred, but I know everyone can play an MP3.

These are excellent, Tomo. Except they're very quiet. But your mic seems good and your voice is suitable for some pretty nice roles.

I'm going to conference your samples with Rian tonight and then get in touch. In the meantime, could you just boost the volume? I'll get you the specifics of format and so on when we cast you.

Battuta, are you using the Voice Acting Manager in FRED?

To generate scripts? Yeah.

We just got lines in from our Sam Bei actor! That means our effort is over the big hump (although, of course, we still have to do retakes on a few lines.)

Summer's coming up, so we'll have more time.

We're probably not going to take too much longer to get lines recorded, assuming we can find actors for the minor roles. But we also have to normalize everything, make sure it's all in the correct format, and get it it ingame. We may need to get in touch with a more pro individual to get that done.

I would be willing to try some voice acting. I've done amateur/public radio, and had a podcast for a while. I'd be willing to do a Comms/Control officer, or perhaps a generic plot-device wingman/pilot. I'll try and find some lines to do, and I'll post here when I get them done.

Also, playing through BP in between work and writing. Fantastic work, guys. It'll be like 150% more awesome with voices.

That'd be ideal! Here are our current lines: Check it out. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,63738.0.html)

Also, I believe Darius just fixed a bug with the ending, so you should go redownload the campaign from the BP 3.6.10 thread - I don't think you'll lose any of your progress.

Give me a chance to get home. I'll have a look-see tonight and get one or two done (depending on bandwith it may have to wait til the weekend.)
