You'll need OpenAL to play the game. You can get Open AL here
http://www.openal.org/downloads.htm
You will also need to run the applicaiton launcher.ese in the folder you just installed to. once it opens make sure the bot at the top says <The Folder You Installed to> \fs2_open_3.6.9.exe.

And what is the Mindspring Directory for internet services doing in the install when complete? Can i delete it, as I dont lilke unknown services appearing in my system? thanks

Your initial post seems to be all over the place. Are you installing FreeSpace on a Windows machine? If so, OpenAL link in my signature. If not, follow the link provided by bfobar.

As insane as I am, I did a search on the forums with the word "mindspring". Most results imply that it is something old and obsolete, originating from the retail era. I wouldn't call it a "service". You can remove it. It won't do anything.

Both the Mindspring and Ereg folders can be safely deleted.

Stuff to register for ISPs and registration with Interplay IIRC.
