Just read this spec - the X-wing in Rogue Leader is 30,000 polys, with (25 I think)512x512 full colour maps - the same model as in the special edition CGI.
I have to say, I've underestimated the latest consoles a bit based on that stat.
-
TWENTY-FIVE 512e2 maps? Darn... :eek2: Man, the GC must be some piece of kit.

Not really, in raw polygon performance the PS2 and Xbox eat it for breakfast.
-
holy cow! thats a lot of polys....i wish i could have that many for fs2 modes...o the ideas :D

Zero effects or textures, yes. Add textures, especially multiple layers, and the GC totally owns the PS2.
The GC's got that nice hardware 1:6 texture compression system. All in all it's like the Mac of the console world: colourful, compact, awesome power for its stats.

True, but the Xbox still eats it for breakfast but then having a GF3 does that....

Can we extend that analogy to market share as well? :p

What do you all mean by "GC"? Game console?

I've always wondered why people put it back to front like that, is it because its Japanese?
-
Because GCN looks cooler than NGC... :p I don't think the japanese have anything to do with it...

Hmmm...an Ewok on the BB. Oh! Sorry, Lieutenant Janson, I didn't realize it was you! ;)
And well, as one magazine once put it, X-Box is the best out of all of them, and it's the easiest to spell! I mean, GameQube or PlayStashun?
:D:D:D
-
XBox is good... but they don't have the games going for them. Halo is quite good, admittedly, easily the best FPS I've ever seen on any console. Gamecube has lots of good game licenses... including the one that gives them Rogue Leader, my current personal favorite. Someone port that puppy to PC so I don't have to use a weenie console control, and I'll be happy indeed. :)
-
to quote someone else I forget who...
If you build the better box, the games will come.

i believe the proper phrase is yub yub commander ;)

That would probably be true if games weren't made for profit... These days the box which can make developers the most money will always win regardless of whats inside it.

Wonder what is the equivalent specifications of a computer if you wanted to play that game...
-
Probably around a 800 MHz processor and a GF2. At least 128 MB RAM.
Of course, with Windows on it probably jumps to 1.4 GHz.

You wouldn't need all that much really, any PC produced in about the last year or so would probably handle it. You'd probably need at least a GF3 or a Radeon though.

A properly designed graphics engine should be able to handle it on that.:)

Does that mean future incarnations will look like desk lamps?

I think the lamp fad will be over by then. I personally think it's going to be shaped like a cat. A kitten, most likely. You know, with Nintendo's "let's target the kiddies!" strategy and all :p

The Nintendo GameKitty? What will its slogan be? Wait, I don't want to consider that...

Now I wonder what would happen if a non-admin had posted something like this? ;)

I remember sitting in a classroom full of dual processor G4s with 512mb RAM running Lightwave6 next to single processor P3s with 256mb RAM. I remember the students using the Macs give up in disgust and using the PCs to do the Lightwave stuff and doing only their textures and compositing on the Macs. Turns out that Mac OS9 and 3d are not a match made in heaven.
More on topic, I'd have to disagreee with you about the PS2 and the Gamecube, simply considering the basic fat pipe architecture that the PS2 is based on. Sure, if you try to force a PC style 3d engine on that hardware, it runs like crap (rather like trying to run LW on a Mac). PC style 3d engines, with their dependency on narrow-pipe/fat-buffer hardware, will almost always rule out on systems (like a Gamecube) designed for that sort of thing. On the other hand, a 3d engine optimised for a fat-pipe/small-buffer system, with an emphasis on fast fetches back to mainstorage and a lack of dependency on multiple staged caches, will run like crap on a Gamecube and rock out on a PS2. The basic architecture of the PS2 goes against the grain of every other console that has come before it (all of which are based, initially, on the small computer philosophy). It is based, instead on the same basic computing philosophy of the supercomputer: bandwidth wins. Fat memory pipes, fat graphics pipes and fat pipes back to main storage. The GCN is cute and all, but, by comparison, its kinda limited by its own hardware.
I'll stick with a PS2 and my beloved PC.

Yeah, the PS2 and it's don't remember how many mb for video, leading in ubber l33t antialiasing
How can someone make such a big mistake on a supposed next gen console?

lol, are you being sarcastic there?;) I don't remember seeing any AA at all on the PS2. (my brother has one and plays GT3 constantly; graphics are okay but can't compare to computer games)

I'm buying a gamecube come september when I have a little cash to play with. I'm buying it on the basis that 'it's not how fast the polygon moves but how much fun it is to move it'.
Nintendo kick ass when it comes to games, I don't give a damn how many million polys it can render, how colorful the box is, how pretty it looks running a pre rendered video, how many pieces of chicken you could cook on its processor. I want one thing; great games.
That's why I bought a GBA :D
Jeese, I sound like Denis Leary :p

 Well said, Meagleoemar. (sp)
[edit by Meagleoemar] Just use Maeg, it's much easier

That's why I stay stuck with my PC, its connection pbs and the windows kernel errors and blue screens of death. Nope, it's not because i'm masochist :p

I would MUCH rather play RPGs on a console. I just bought Septerra Core for the PC (bargain bin), and did a damn all-nighter. My back hurts like no tomorrow.
But heck yeah, I'm getting a GameCube. Right after the GBA.

Same here; the PC is the only real man's gaming machine!:D

GBA rules...
Goes to play Doom.

Agreed. Personally I'm looking forward to Metroid Prime, Resident Evil: Zero, and the new Zelda looks rather... interesting. It seems as if its based on the original NES version or something. Smash Bros. Melee can be fun for awhile too, and Rogue Leader is a blast for any Star Wars fan. Personally, I think the console is fine, and but then I find people attacking the controller. You get used to it like any controller and I know you'll be able to buy many off-brand modifications. GCN is as good as the rest in my opinion.... minus my computer of course.
-
btw, about SW fans... I've heard that Luigi's mansion sold much better than rogue leader in the States... isn't that odd?
-
RS II is a much better game than Luigi's mansion.
-
Anything to do with Star Wars is (ahem) ...... I didn't say anything :D
Boo! Star Wars!
*Cough* *Cough*

More copies sold? MORE COPIES SOLD!? (http://www.evilnet.net/~mechwar3d/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif)
Wipe them out...all of them. :drevil:

Actually the GC controller recieved the best general review of all the next gen. controllers. It's got an excellent design whereas the xbox controller is too big for the japanese (the console too, some were making jokes of using it for a coffee table :) ). The xbox controller is a good example of bad design, tiny buttons and a flimsy analogue stick. Not good.
The original PS1 pad (no sticks or vibration) was a great pad, it was light, sat well in your hands and you never got finger ache from using it, the analogue pad by comparison was crap.
If anyone in the UK reads EDGE (a highly respected games magazine) they might have seen a review of the GC. The guy reviewing it said something along the lines of 'the pad is so comfortable and easy to use that sometimes you forget it's there'.
Sounds good to me.
