Title: Original FreeSpace High Res???
Post by: PinkFloyd2003 on August 10, 2008, 12:09:32 am
Is there a patch or some kind of tweak to bump the resolution of the Freespace: The Great War up even to something like 1024 x 768?  800 x 600 is really really tough to play on.  I know there was a mod for the original missions on FS2 but it just seems it'd be easier to use the actual FS and ST CDs.  Thanks!

Just get FSOpen. It comes with the FSPort to Freespace 2. Click 'Freespace Open Installer' above and run through it.

I know that you've already got the CDs for FS1, but, to be honest, this is worth your time.

Look for Turey's Installer. It'll download and install everything you need.

http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Installing_fs2_open - all the information you'll need. It's not a short read, but it's well worth your time. The original version of FS1 still has late 90's graphics. The SCP has added many, many things including hi-poly ships, etc.

Umm... Well, getting FSO is the obvious next step. But shouldn't 1024x768 be usable if sparky_hi.vp is in \freespace2\? And if it isn't, shouldn't the resolution be limited to 640x480?

1. Use Turey's Installer: download the FSO builds and the Launcher, FSPort, the MediaVPs and if you want, any user-made campaigns and mods.
2. Download and install OpenAL (link in my signature).
3. Download the recommended Windows build, if you're a Windows user (link in my signature).
4. Once finished, open the Launcher. Select the recommended build that you've downloaded (and extracted to \freespace2\). Check from the Audio/Joystick tab that you have Generic Software selected. Check from the Video tab that you have OpenGL (and a pleasant resolution) selected. Go to the Features tab and tick on at least Enable specular, Enable glowmaps and Use models for ship selection. Tick other options according to your preferences and the abilities of your computer.
5. From the MOD tab, select the FSPort folder as a mod. FSPort allows you to indeed play the FS1 main campaign and Silent Threat with this all-new and funky FSO engine. Click Apply and Run. Once you've created a pilot, head to the Campaign Room and select the FS1 campaign. Otherwise you'll get crashes and will probably tell us about them.
6. Play.
7. Once played, continue with FS2: again go to the Launcher's mod tab and select the \mediavps\ folder as your mod. Create a new pilot (it is recommended to have one pilot/mod). Play.

If problems occur, search the forums or ask.

Oh, and during FSPort, the Advanced Training Mission is broken. You most likely don't have the missiles you're supposed to use. Just skip the mission. There is a Skip Training button on the upper right corner of the briefing screen.

Edit: Oops. You were talking about FS1. Pardon, reading is somewhat difficult on hangover mornings. But do try FSPort. It's not exactly like the original FS1, but close enough. And fun. And pretty, especially with the MediaVPs. And Silent Threat works better with the Port.

Just so you know, Solatar, the 'Freespace Open Installer' linked in the top bar of HLP is Turey's installer.

Glad to help! *bow* It was a really good thing to add. I believe it was Goober who was responsible.
