Freespace MOD-making is extremely esoteric these days (known only to a select number of people.
You have all heard this quote: "Knowledge is power." It is true. By limiting the number of people to learn Freespace MODDING is limiting Freespace. We experienced modders should band together and write a thorough manual on every aspect of MOD-making.
There are several unlinked manuals on Freespace model making with extremely bad grammar. Some are practically unreadable. We should write the ultimate manual on making models and other mods from table editting to advanced model editing.
Only by doing this can we spare Freespace from entering the doldrums. We must be organized in this project. If you want to join, please reply to this topic.
Example of some things to include in the manual:
1. Table editting
2. Basic operations with Truespace (Basic model making), 3D MAX, etc.
3. Using POF-editting programs such as Segeltuch and KAZAN's tools.
4. Advanced operations with Truespace (Texturing, sub-objects, thrusters, etc.)

I have a partial tutorial on how to place everything the proper way on Truespace... I'm not sure if everything in there is right, but it's the way I do things. It would be a lot better to get everyone organized, including the top model converters, such as Woomeister and Bobboau, since they're the ones who know best how to tame that wild beast that's Truespace.

Ooh, this could be part of the FAQ. Like, 80% of it.

lol...the first two peoples siggys look odd in comparison to eachother...
and Styxx...can I please have that?

No, seriously. Not to spark a debate or anything, but knowing that mankind is essentially evil allows you to take bad news much more easily. I'd rather be occasionally pleasantly suprised than constantly disappointed.

I would be willing to do grammar check and spell check.....;)
though it would be roughly once a month because I probably have to go to the LIB to check e-mails anyhow...because I’m off the net permanently in 4 days...don't know for how long

being new and almost useless to modding, i have little to contribute, only this: make it thorough, very thorough, taking the reader step by step through the whole process. Screenshots are very helpful, especially those that show the tool icons of tools to use. I have nothing more to say, good luck, i bid you success in your endevour.

Where's Coolmon, I wonder? :)

AHHHH Where can I get Segeltuch?

You forgot me ;)

I would like to read that! (just so I can say 'HAR HAR!' when you make a mistake! :D )
Harry up and make it then.... (just make sure you release it after I finished my TC - don't want people bettering ME! :D ;))
-
I can do an MS3D tutorial!
-
Yes! I've always wanted to do a mod!
-
I would probably be a better reader than a writer here since I am pretty much a newbie to modeling.;) I have a significant amount of experience with table editing, so I might be able to do something on putting together the table entry, but that is about it. And of course, spelling/grammar editing if necessary.;)

Look to VolitionWatch

If needed, I could make a guide how to build up a FS2 mod. I like that kind of stuff. I mean freespace.

Smoking me out, eh? ;) The Freespace forum seems to have bounced up in popularity, I 'll have to start checking it more frequently :o
Yep, something like this is coming...more info in about a week, methinks... :drevil:
But it will need content and I'm going to be learning as I write, so anything else people write would be greatly appreciated.

This seems to be getting nowhere. :headz:

Remind me to upload the doc tonight, I keep forgetting about it. Telling Shrike to let me use my computer at home would help too. :D

I agree with this idea wholeheartedly, unfortunately there are a few problems with documenting certain aspects of modding, specifically model making.
I for instance build models from a picture that I have in my head, there's no real 'concept art', maybe a few doodles to get certain areas of the model to look the way I want them to. I then proceed to use Rhino3D (not the most popular modelling program by all accounts) to build the model from first a three view wireframe (an X,Y and Z picture basically). I build the basic model shape face by face and then boolean the objects I want parts removed from or joined, I don't extrude/manipulate spheres and boxes like most of the other modellers. I also use multiple subobjects (which bob will give you a good telling off for).
This is a non conventional method of model building but it works and proves that if you do try to document a flexible process like this you'll have 6 different guides by 6 people who all do it in a different way depending on what modelling software they have access to and how they use it.
Documentation is excellent in theory but you just can't document some things, you have to get hands on

No, we want the people to know HOW TO make models, not the thinking process. In simple terms, how to use Truespace, Blender, Rhino 3D, etc. The program interface.

TAP wil have these and more, all my knolegde wil go in guides that wil be in TAP

LOL I was wondering about the same thing; sounds like a word in German but I have no idea what its meaning might be.

Good call Rampage. I'm midway through the second step of writing it. It's going to be L O N G , T H O R O U G H, and complete. And going to be available in html format. AND ONLY HTML FORMAT! (until I get word :D )

I know why there are not a lot of people modding. because the can't afford the expensive TS.
