Hi,
I tried a search but couldn't find anyone with this problem. I just purchased a "new" boxed 20th anniversary edition and when installing the 1st CD installed then when asked for the second it froze the computer. I had to power down and tried again same result. The autoexec.nt is in the system 32 directory and I do not get that error. I just can't finish the install. Anyone have an answer?
I am using a toshiba tablet M700 with XP.
Thanks,
Saturn

Normally I'd recommend that you tried Turey's Installer, but right now there are at least two new threads complaining that it is unable to download stuff. So, go to the Home of the Underdogs and download FreeSpace 2 from there.
-
- Check Disc 2 for damage.
- Check the contents of Disc 2 make sure they actually exist and its not reading it as a blank CD.
- Make sure you didn't accidentally change the source drive in the install.
If none of this helped, my only solution is to download this (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/files/installer/FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.zip) and install FreeSpace 2 SCP instead. It doesn't require the CD's to play and it's features include:
- State-of-the-art graphics.
- Enhansed game engine.
- Hi-poly models
- Tons of user created mods
- Modding Tools
- Descent: FreeSpace, ported to the FreeSpace2 SCP engine with better graphics and hi-poly models

*cough* As I said, a few people have just reported issues with the Installer not downloading anything. Of course, dear Saturn, you can give the Installer a shot, since it is by far the easiest option there is. But, if it looks like it won't start downloading anything, forget about it and download FS2 here (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=4150). After that you can retry the Installer: you can then point it at the folder where you've installed FS2 from HotU.

I have the discs saved to one of my webservers, download the following files, burn them to CD and try them.
Disc1 (http://fszmirror.com/files/discs/disc1.rar)
Disc2 (http://fszmirror.com/files/discs/disc2.rar)
Disc3 (http://fszmirror.com/files/discs/disc3.rar)
And then if you want the enhansed Graphics and working multiplayer:
(install these to your FreeSpace2 Root directory; i.e. C:\Games\FreeSpace2\)
EXEs (http://fszmirror.com/files/builds/fso/official/3.6.9/3.6.9.zip) (extract this obviously)
multi-mission-pack.vp (http://fszmirror.com/files/multi-mission-pack.vp)
multi-voice-pack.vp (http://fszmirror.com/files/multi-voice-pack.vp)
(make a folder in your root directory called "mediavps" and place the following files in there)
mp-710_adveffects.vp (http://fszmirror.com/files/mediavps/mp-710_adveffects.vp)
mp-710_effects.vp (http://fszmirror.com/files/mediavps/mp-710_effects.vp)
mp-710_models.vp (http://fszmirror.com/files/mediavps/mp-710_models.vp)
mv_adveffects.vp (http://fszmirror.com/files/mediavps/mv_adveffects.vp)
mv_effects.vp (http://fszmirror.com/files/mediavps/mv_effects.vp)
mv_models.vp (http://fszmirror.com/files/mediavps/mv_models.vp)
mv_textures.vp (http://fszmirror.com/files/mediavps/mv_textures.vp)
When you run launcher.exe, at the top make sure fs2_open_3_6_9.exe is selected, if it isnt, click browse and select it. Then setup the features to your liking, then goto the mods tab, and click select mod, then select the "mediavps" folder that you created, then goto video, your going to want OpenGL, 1024 x 768 resolution, 32 bit and trilinear selected in the drop down boxes and then at the bottom of the video tab check "Use Large Textures", goto lan and select your settings, if you have a joystick goto audio/joystick and select your joystick and leave the sound at generic software.
If you get an OpenAL error, goto the OpenAL (http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/Forms/AllItems.aspx) website and download the windows installer.
--Your OpenAL link was broken. Don' worry. I fix it. For free. kthxbye

Wow.
I wnt to thank you both for responding so quickly. I did download all the files and will post back on my progress tomorrow. need to sleep work comes soon; but I did want to thank you for so much advise, files and help posted so quickly.
Thank you!
Well, I downloaded all the ISO files and burned 3 new disks (THANK YOU!) but it didn't cure the problem. I still can't load the 2nd disk. Disk 1 installs and asks for disk 2. When I put disk 2 in it doesn't autoload, I click OK (for d:\) but nothing happens. I click OK again and it shows me that it is locked up (hourglass stays there) I can't exit or quit the program even through the task manager. I also tried browsing to the folder but it won't do that either. Once it wants Disk2 I am dead in the water.
I tried to load in a windows safe mode but disk 2 still fails to go. When I try to run Fs2AutoRun.exe from the disk nothing happens. Even tried it from the cmd line.
I need to uninstall it manually as it would let me uninstall through the program the first disk says the uninstall file is bad (it did say that when the first disk started to load). I guess I will go through regedit and try to delete FS2 files. This is really strange because FS1 loaded just fine and I have played it and silent threat several times (still can't make it through on the high setting but I never did before either)
Very confused!

Hmm. Most likely something to do with your system.
I peeked at that site where the ISOs are hosted. All the retal vps seem to be there separately. So, you can manually build yourself a FreeSpace 2 by downloading the following files from here (http://fszmirror.com/files/): FRED2.exe, FS2.exe, FreeSpace2.exe, multi-mission-pack.vp, multi-voice-pack.vp, root_fs2.vp, smarty_fs2.vp, sparky_fs2.vp, sparky_hi_fs2.vp, stu_fs2.vp, tango1_fs2.vp, tango2_fs2.vp, tango3_fs2.vp and warble_fs2.vp.
Then just continue according to the earlier instructions. Get the FSO builds, the Launcher, the MediaVPs and so on. And don't forget to install OpenAL.
Except that [DW]-Hunter's instructions include the 3.6.9 build. Even though it is the latest official build, there are some irritating issues with it. You might want to download the Recommended build for Windows users from my signature.

OK,
I wasted many hours on this but here is what I did and what happened.
I also thought it was something on the tablet PC(I travel a lot and like to play). So I tried it on my desktop at work (admin) the original FS2 boxed disks worked just fine! Tested the install. No Problems
I then listed the processes running for both the tablet and the desktop, compared them, eliminated the common processes, searched out the others and stopped the ones that really were not needed for an install. Tablet still hung.
After reboot I then networked the tablet to the PC (shared the tablet drive) and tried to install to the tablet from the desktop. It started but blew up at the end of disk 1 with a Mindspring error.
I then copied all the files from the disks to the tablet hard drive, creating the autorun.inf with notepad. I started the install from the hard drive, it asked for disk 1, and once it checked disk 1 from the CD it finished installing from the HD, asked for disk 2 and did its check on that one, finished and it ran the setup installer asked for disk2 again and now, finally it runs FS2!
I would really like to understand what was messing with me but unless one of experts here can tell me I guess I will never know.
I will go over the FS2_open once I blow some stuff up tonight. I want to read up on the differences before I install it. I have never played online or even seen someone play online ( kind of pathetic since I have been around since pong and 8080 processors) maybe someone can point the way for me especially if they need a quick kill.
Thank you.

20th anniversary? FS2 was released in 88?
-
Hi,
Nope. I think maybe they named it for the years interplay was in business. They released this in 2004. They made 2000 boxed and numbered 20th anniversary editions. The only difference I know of was they added 20 new missions to the disks. Some from them and probably some from the people that contribute here.

You could install FS2 to another computer, and then copy the FS2 directory over to the computer your having problems on, and then follow the rest of my instructions.

Thanks. I do have the retail running on the tablet now. The only problem I seems to have is getting the Joystick (Logitech 3dproFF) buttons mapped. No matter what I do I can't get the trigger to fire the guns only the missiles. Strange.
I plan on trying to update to FS2 Open in the next few days. I have been reading a lot of the posts here to get a better understanding.
Thanks
