Title: Asteroid Bug
Post by: Tsear on August 13, 2008, 06:18:02 pm
I recently found out about FS2 Open, and I'm very impressed by the job you guys have done. It's also very nice to be able to play one of my favorite games again, as I haven't been able to find my CD for years.

I've run into a bug with the asteroids, though. They won't show up at all, not in FS2 or the original. I'm running an NVIDIA 7800 on Windows 64-bit.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks a bunch.

What version of FS2Open and the MediaVPs are you using? Did you use the FS2Open Launcher (not the one that comes with Freespace 2) to turn on "-jpgtga" (JPG/TGA textures)?

I have version 3.6.9 of the launcher, I'm not certain how to check the version of my MedaVPs. I haven't turned on -jpgtga, and that might be the problem; I can't find that option though. How do I do that?

If you've selected the FS2Open EXE, and -jpgtga doesn't appear but a number of other graphical features, including "Environment mapping", appears then you've got a build that's new enough to have it turned on by default.

I don't have a method of figuring out mediaVP version from the files on your HDD that's quick and easy, so where did you get them from? The version number should be posted on the download page.

I don't know yet what might be causing this problem, besides some kind of installation problem, odd graphics configuration, or graphics drivers issue (you do have the latest version, right?) or something specific to Windows 64-bit or something. Hopefully someone else has had this problem.

Version 3.6.9 of the engine itself, actually. The Launcher is merely a tool for fiddling with the options. Enable jpg/tga textures, like all the other options, are under the Features tab in the Launcher. Tick it on. Or alternatively, download the Recommended build for Windows users from my signature (use 7-Zip or equivalent to extract it). All 3.6.10 builds enable jpg/tga textures automatically so the option isn't listed in Features.
