Does anyone know of any good Freeware games out there? I've tried searching many times through google, but I haven't found anything that really grabs my interests.
-
Some nice ones I've played in the last several months are Neverball (puzzle game where you guide a ball through various obstacle courses, hard and very addictive), Hurrican (2D platformer, very polished and nice graphics) and Trackmania Nations Forever (arcade stunt racing game, similar to Rollcage's scramble mode).
-
how about freespace 2? ^^
-
You could try torrent, most games on there aren't "freeware" but you still aren't paying for them :P
-
Every game is freeware if you look hard enough. ;)
-
Ooh, sizzler, you pirate. :drevil:
Have you seen this? (http://www.acid-play.com)

There are quite a bit of freeware games listed here: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=80&threadid=1207656
[DW]-Hunter & thesizzler, please refrain from provoking people to pirate games/software in these forums.

FS2 isn't freeware.
Armagetron Advanced ( http://armagetronad.net/ ) proved to be very addictive to me. It's kind of simple, but the online play isn't so bad. It was more addictive the last few weeks of school when some friends and I played LAN games during economics...

What Makes You Tick (http://wmyt.deaddog.de/) - Adventure game in the Monkey Island style. Pretty good if a little short.

Well the "big" guns in the Open Source FPS crowd are:
Nexuiz
Warsow
Tremulous
Sauerbraten
Cube
Alien Arena
I'd have to say Nexuiz and Alien Arena are the most fun. Nexuiz is like Quake 3 on cocaine, it's all about reaction time and lightening quick reactions. It's kinda laggy though.
Warsow is fun, I guess, but I never really liked it.
Tremulous is fun for a week or so, but it really gets old terribly fast.
Sauerbraten is sort of a weak attempt to make a new original Quake. Cube is what it's (originally) based off of.
I'd recommend downloading Quake 1 (not technically legal, but not as morally painful compared to say, downloading Bioshock) and installing Darkplaces. It's not a deep and mystical gaming experience, but it'll knock some hours out of your day.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_commercial_games_released_as_freeware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_commercial_games_released_as_freeware) - it doesnt have every game thats old but its a good list of games. also one name you will like to see in there!!! :D
one such site that does freeware games, http://www.reloaded.org (http://www.reloaded.org).
stragry, a polish site did freeware games at one time but i not certain any further about that site.
home of the underdogs does freeware but is prone to viruses and worms hitting the site, so do so under your own risk.

Ur Quan Masters (http://sc2.sourceforge.net/): (a.k.a. Star Control 2 Remake) Best scenario I know of, extremely fun to play and fun to read. You don't need to play the 1 which mostly was an arcade game.
Battle for Wesnoth (http://www.wesnoth.org/) : CLEARLY the best open-source strategy game out there, but you need to like Fantasy.
Vega Strike (http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/) and Privateer Remake (http://wcuniverse.sourceforge.net/downloads.htm) (same source code, different games) (BEWARE : NOT PRIVATEER GEMINI GOLD, except if you're a fan of abandonware and you want to play "pure"). They are space sim with a strong trading element.
-
Oh... and if you speak French, there is that wonderful game just out :
www.hordes.fr
With a group of 40 players, you must survive as long as possible as a city against Hordes of Zombies, by trying to fetch ressources in the dangerous desert, banning from the city or better hanging non-cooperative players (those stealing the communauty defenses to barricade their home for instance, or doing too little for them to deserve getting water from the almost empty well), building defenses, killing zombies, etc etc.
Great game... I discovered it one week ago, it replaced FS2 as my main game :)
Should be translated soon, though. Since it had a major success in France (>40 000 players).
-
Geneforge... it's a prettied up diablo, but it's really addictive and has 3 (IIRC) sequels. It's not "freeware" but it is one of those games where you can download the demo, and activate it with a key. and it says in the license you can give the to your friends... so, we're all friends here right? :nervous:
-
Hey, I play Wesnoth (here and there) too... :nervous:
Try learning how to run DOSBox. Once you do that, you can play Stargunner and BioMenace on a modern operating system. Both games are from 3D Realms.
Alternatively, have you seen this (http://www.lf2.net)?

If you're interested in shmups:
"Destroy the core." (http://shootthecore.moonpod.com/database.php)
Also, any shmup by x.x (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://www004.upp.so-net.ne.jp/x_xgameroom/&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=1&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dx.x%2Bgameroom%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff)
Eden's Aegis is his current project, and so is only a demo at this point. Blue Wish Resurrection is far and away his most popular game, but Eden's Edge and Green Wind are both excellent as well, if a bit lacking in the graphics department.

There's a giant robot fighting game if that's your cup of tea.
Here's (http://mirrormoon.org/projects/windom) the link to the mirror hosting the translated version.

Escape Velocity Nova...not strictly speaking freeware, but only one feature I can think of is really locked out, and it's well worth the download even without most of the storylines activated.
Protip: Don't accept any mission to move anything direct to Earth, it dumps you in the most common storyline, and the least interesting one.
-
Thanks guys! That'll be enough to keep me going for a while with out having to spend any money.
And I don't like to download anything with torrents, I'm the rare breed that actually likes to mkae sure that the developers make some cash from their games. So that way they can make more.

I don't think abondonware really counts.

A game I'm suggesting isn't free, but it's worth having a look at before moving on.
Stand in awe of . . . Deimos Rising! :)
It's virtually an arcade ship-shooter game that is free on the demo missions. Demo it might be, but either that I suck or even the first 3 missions are quite difficult. :nervous:

i dont play demos. i used to as well, but no longer.
this thread is a freeware thread, looking on google.; it's their one site thats supposedly freeware, where you dont find licence: demo/shareware?

You won't torrent but you're happy to play freeware games without sending the developers cash so they can make more?
-
BC3K is free, ya?
-
derek smarts game i assume your talking about snail?
spicious, i wont play ball with the devs if their just gonna to do something like EVE for example, claw in 15 dollars or more for one person for one month and on average 250,000 people are online give or take everyday. and this has been going on for a few years. i still dont see another EVE version coming out and i doubt it. their motive is money related and it doesn't even shift the scales with the small updates their given, to the amount of money their getting.
where if the devs are going to do a wide range (meaning this company does space game and a strategy building game and then a fps, a sims like game, a racing game etc...) of certain games and need the money i would just buy it so they can have the money necessary. however some games you just cant get these days and you either wait for the impossible luck to change or download it somewhere.
-
sure they're free, but are they GOOD?
You'll surely get at least your money's worth of quality.

Yup.
9/10 chance you'll **** your dog after playing.

Hey wow! Someone else who plays Deimos Rising!
The difficult thing about it is that it has your standard rapid-fire widespread weapons... but only for air targets. You get really short-range bombs for ground targets, which are accompanied by truckloads of health.
Heh... the game doesn't get truly difficult until the ninth mission. Shielded gun emplacements, homing gun emplacements, enemies like giant shuriken, numerous rapid-firing tanks on the ground... the final mission even has invincible black square things that exist solely to get in your way (block your shots and kill you if you touch them).

The developers actively chose to release their game for free.
Plus, if I download one of their games and love it, I'll tell my friends about it. Word of mouth is just as good as money in some cases. And I'm not averse to donating money to the devs, but it's not like I'm sitting on a mountain of cash. I'm going back to college next week. Beer needs to be bought.

How about Need For Madness? It's an online game from RadicalPlay.com, but ArcadeTown has a free PC download available.

you dislike the Vell-os? Heretic! Aurorans, Vell-os and Polaris are best! :)

I'll grant the Vell-os ships are pretty awesome, but the storyline ain't the best of them. (That honor goes unequivocally to the Auroran.)
-
agree to the second part, don't agree to the first.
Uninteresting are Rebels and Assoc (and Wild Geese).
Another full free (legal, ad supported) game:
http://www.fileplanet.com/187537/180000/fileinfo/Psi-Ops:-The-Mindgate-Conspiracy-(Free-Game)
The Adds are harmless, it's like this: A 8 second add pops up either at game start or after quitting and there is a little banner in the menu. That's all.
-
The following is NOT freeware, but I got it from WildGames for free anyway, so it might be worth giving it a shot.
You may be able to get Blasterball 2: Holidays for free if you download the WildGames Console (http://www.wildgames.com/console). However, this offer was valid a long time ago, and after so many updates to the Game Console, I'm not sure if they bundle it with Blasterball 2: Holidays now.
Final Drive Nitro is one of WildGames' more successful games. Some years back, they released its "smaller brother", Final Drive Fury (http://www.wildgames.com/games/final-drive-fury). Unlike Nitro, which requires you to purchase the full version, WildGames offers Final Drive Fury to the public for free. Fury cannot compare to Nitro, though, so be warned.
-

Tru dat.
-
you agree, I do not. Well doesn't matter :).
you can get Escape Velocity and Escape Velocity Override for free if you buy EV:Nova ;7
(they are available as TCs). And they are even better now since they use some of the new features.
And then, there is that gorgus graphical update TC for Override which can be converted to Nova...
A-W-E-S-O-M-E.
Still, EV and EV:O differ from Nova, especially the way the stories are told. Still, wouldn't it be great to discover a all new universe? (in case you dont know, no EV game has any connections to another).
-
Sadly, to give you an idea of just HOW awesome the Vell-os ships are, when I see a pair of Darts in my mighty Polaris Scarab, which will eat any other ship in the game except perhaps the even mightier Raven as a snack, I fear for my survival (and about half the time, am justified) When I see an Arrow, I jump the hell out, never mind a Javelin.
(Though it might help to deploy my 12 Mantas more, but they're half a mill each to replace!)

for free?
Woot i can die happy"!!
[superstrongsarcasm tags in effect]
I've played Battlecruiser Millennium (*waits for blow to fall* :P), it's not the best game I've ever played, but it's not the worst, either. It's just ... well, neither good or bad. In the middle. I think the problem with it is that it has a complete lack of character. Although I enjoyed playing it a few times, it can be dull on occasion.
But onto something you might like: Generally (http://generally.rscsites.org/). It's a nice little race game. Only about a 1.3Mb download. Although the graphics are bright and cheerful, if I recall correctly the physics are good enough for it to be classed as a simulation. And it has a big community, so you can expand it by getting new tracks, cars and sounds etc.
-
Oh yes, how could I forget GeneRally?
I used to have it installed on my computer*, but after it kept crashing, I removed it.
* - I was twelve years old and using Windows Me at that time.
