The textures are still in progress

Anudder one? Or is this VA's one? Err, me is confused.
-
Looks a little stubby.

Looks a little stubby.
Ortho mode rather than perspective.Anudder one? Or is this VA's one? Err, me is confused.
The nose on VA's one is more polygonal
-
But why do we need to make another one?
-
Well it looks very nice, but errm....why a Valkyrie when there are loads of other untouched ships?
Or was it just one of those 'I wanna do the X!' moments? ;)
-
Scorpion please
-
Scorpion please
Yeah, the Scorpion ruled.
-
Is anyone actually sure that VA's working on one... the only place I've seen where anyone mentions VA working on a Valkyrie is that thread that Goober locked. "Is there an HTL..."
-

I'm sure he is. If he wasn't he would've said so by now.
-
I am, yeah. It got put on hold for media VP things when the FSU team was formed, and has remained on hold due to subsequent projects. I'm around 1/3 of the way through texturing.
-
Why does nobody want to round off those corners? We've had what, four iterations now, and still the same low-poly engine blocks with accents and greebles. *sulks*
On the plus side, the ambient occlusion maps look wonderful. The seams on the armor are a bit too high contrast with the rest of the hull, however.
-
can we see a perspective view? it looks nice but va's looks more like an interceptor, this looks too "heavy". good for a valk spin-of tho.
-
Scorpion please
Yeah, the Scorpion ruled.
But not as much as the shaitan

It's on the BWO list and has no htl version ;)

That has been bugging me, but was hoping to get away with it. Looks like it needs more work. Is it just the engine block? as I'm mostly happy with the rest.
-
It could use a few more greebles, but other than that and the engine blocks it's great
-
It's torture...so many unfinished Valkyries, not one released. It should be a race.
....GO!
-

I shall post an image to illustrate.

Basically what you did to the neck and the cockpit, but to the rest of the hull as well.
-

It's at 5k now excluding pilot. So that may add a bit extra. I'll give it a shot.

Not necessarily so simple...

Where's all the smooth! :p
Some of the "blockyness" could be interpreted as design feature and/or overall shape of the ship, some not so much.
I would say the real trick is in determining what's supposed to be there and what should be changed from angled to curved, from blocky to smooth, adding small detail in overall, and retain the overall look of the original so that it's instantly recognizeable as a new version of the old one (and there isn't too great a change between LOD's).
-
I actually really like this Valkyrie so far. I think a certain amount of blokiness is necessary here, like the Orion, or the Apollo.
-
Agreed. It shouldn't look smooth, but I think it shouldn't look low-poly either. But the wings and the engine outlets still do.
-
Looks like the Valkyrie is a very popular fighter :)
As for the wings, you can`t make it more smooth without major design changes. It`s like making for example F/A-18 wings more smooth. It just don`t look good after all.
-
Will somebody please release a hi-poly Valkyrie at last? They're all much more than appropriate already.
-
Not exactly...
I guess, that ultimately we`ll choose the VA`s one, and he`s done 1/3 of texturing (if I`m not wrong).
And from my experience I can say, that in this kind of model texturing is the longest step.
And even if you`d like choose this model, it still needs a lot of work on textures, so you`ll have to wait anyway.
-
The wings don't need to be smoothed, I just can't stand that 120 degree angle kink running down the entire length of the fighter that nobody's bothered to smooth out.
btw, this needs to go to the FSPort MVP forum.
-
What 120° kink?
-
btw, this needs to go to the FSPort MVP forum.
It is done.
-
This should get interesting quite fast.
Galemp - Ignore the rough edges, is this what you had in mind?

-
I like the top one better imo.
-
ahhh, the back looks so much better... thank you.
now just do that to the front all the way up, and to the engine nacelles, and we'll be in business! :D I do like VA's polygonal nosecone though, and the cowling over the missile pods. That could actually remain polygonal over the curved hull.
Try rendering it with smoothgroups turned off, since you haven't cleaned them up completely yet.
-
I like the top one better imo.
Yes I do too. The rounded one makes it look as if it's trying to be a Perseus but failing. Badly.
-

So you actually wanted the polar opposite of the way Water smoothed it. Faceted cockpit and neck, curved body and engines. ;)
I gotta say though I really dislike a curvey Valkyrie - those angles are a part of it's early fighter charm! :p

The collective intelligence of all the Snails in the universe agree.
-
If I want super dooper smooth, I'll fly a Perseus. Valkyrie's should be blockyish.
-
The only part of the valk I think should be rounded is the engine nacelles... the rest looks fine
-
Please keep it blocky.
-
I'm not sure who's going to actually release theirs first, but if VA doesn't, Water you might have a look at his cockpit.
http://sectorgame.com/ti-file-dump/VasudanAdmiral/Pics/Uglies/Cherokee1.jpg (just the cockpit)
And the HTL Angel: http://inferno.hard-light.net/AngelScout.jpg
His is a lot blockier than yours, but it still looks hi-poly. Smoothing isn't everything, look at the Hercules or Loki.
-
Blocky is what makes Terran ships Terran. ;)
-
:yes2: at that. In FS1 anyway.
-

Well, the cockpit/neck area is the part that looks correct smoothed (IMHO). PL_Harpoon's version also had the cockpit area smooth although the neck was very flat.
cb_valkrie.ani for me shows the cockpit/neck as mostly smooth except for the upper neck. So that part doesn't need to be blocky and could be said to have :v: support. :P *
If I want super dooper smooth, I'll fly a Perseus. Valkyrie's should be blockyish.
Thing is, that the lods for the Perseus are labled valk. I'm guessing the Perseus was possibly aimed as a Valkyrie 2 at one stage. It's the only other fighter that has the wings cranked near the tips.
Of the two I like the top one better. I think it is possible to smooth the back a bit and have it look good, but think it does need to retain some sort of blockyness.
* Yeah I know viewers choice
-
Blocky doesn't mean it has to have razor-sharp corners.

Not quite there yet

Normal map and some wear ;)
-
It's looking great, albeit a bit... tan? Not a bad thing, it's just different hue than the mostly gray vanilla Valkyrie.
Normal maps could have a bit more depth on them, but not much.
-
Wow, it looks like a WWII fighter! Like an RAF Spitfire or something.
Really, really cool.
Herra's right, though: the saturation needs to come down a bit. From what I can see, it also looks like you need to darken the underside.
-
What can i say... i'm impressed.
Just a small note: I think that the nose diameter should look biger than the diameter off the cockpit at the point where they adject. :)
-
Where'd the cockpit go?
other than that missing feature it looks freaking sweet. it doesn't just look hi-poly, it looks almost real.
-
heh, i'd be willing to play it now!
-
Awesome!
-
Thanks for the pointers ;)
I'll sort out those problem areas. There is a cockpit but it will be fixed last.
-
So who's valk will end up in the package, and will the other be available for download?
Gorgeous BTW
-
/me sees the FPS indicator at the bottom of the screenshot
That's in-game already? :eek2:

I want it so bad now. :P
-
lol that's in game? I thought that was a render for posterity
That's really amazing it looks great... although... I kind of wish it was a little shinier (more spec not a whole lot though). It looks like it has a coat of non-reflective paint.
-
It looks like it has a coat of non-reflective paint.
Which absolutely makes sense. Non-glossy surfaces have a lot of advantages over glossy ones. Mainly, reduced observability (glints don't catch enemy's attention) on visual range, and furthermore glints won't distract the pilots' ability to observe their surroundings.
If weight reduction is necessary or you just don't want to use paint, brushed metal surfaces are preferable to polished metal surfaces.
That from utilitarian viewpoint. I was never a fan of overly shiny glossy ships. Some parts, surely, but not the whole surface. Makes no sense at all. :ick:
-
Super slick surface shields. . :nervous: or turtle wax. That's my excuse for my craft when they finally appear.
-
Water, your Valk looks amazing!
-
Uhhh... so THIS is what you've been vusy with instead of modelling\texturing the XXXXXXX from BWO... just wait a sec and I'll get da whip!! :D
Seriously now, looks gorgeous
-
 Wow!
Man, it looks absolutely stunning :eek2:
Just make sure to change the saturation of textures to a bit lower value, and release it!
-
i demand it gets released now.

See I WAS going to say that but I figured I'd just positively encourage him so we could get him back in the BWO forums :D :D :D
Plus...we use the Valkyrie in BWO :)
-

This one seems to look right with just low sheen.

Stop yapping and finish the sexah Valkyrie! :P

Ok fair enough, my apologies then :P

Aaargh! Make the tan textures gray and release!
-
I hate to be grabby, but can we expect a similarly hi-quality Angel?
-
this thing looks very nice, how did you get your curves to be so smooth?
-
I want to fly her brains out... :nervous:
-

Probably good normal mapping
Also, that's without specular maps right? Because it looks a bit waxy as it is
-
yeah, looks plasticy. and the shape reminds me of a baby toy :blah:
good anyways/
-
the shape reminds me of a baby toy :blah:
A baby toy with laz0rz  :P
-
and itz got----- A LAZAH!!!!!!!
-
The top is too smooth for my liking... I would have instead put a crease on either side of the central low-place, continuing as with the sides of the missile tubes (at least I think those are the missiles, it's been a long time since I played though).
-
Yeah that second picture seriously looks like a toy. Like a photograph of a toy. Not a complaint, just an observation.
-
It looks like a photograph of a very good toy.
But yeah, it does look a bit plastic, come to mention it...
-

For the nose area - mainly just moving vertices until the smoothing looked ok in Blender.
Aaargh! Make the tan textures gray and release!
Err.. I don't mind gray, but not on this. Here are the :v: colours.
For the plastic/shine - I didn't alter the shine map when I changed the colours. It's mainly the top that looks waxy because it's the cleanest part of the paintwork. (less non shine dirt) It will be easy to fix.

What, you're not going to use your own?
And maybe I prefer it being gray. At least closer to Volition's Valkyrie. And I seem to remember those being FSKing's textures, not Volition's... or have I gone crazy and my memories are running together?
-

Yeah Freespaceking's texture seemed gray in comparison.

-
ZZZ, need sleep.
Not sure how to say it right now, but I'm thinking it could be a little less tan. :)
-
If the past taught us anything, it's that we should stick to the original style even if it may look a tad worse.
-
meh, release both.

Wow those renders are amazing man...well done and keep it up!
-
Plus...we use the Valkyrie in BWO :)
Aside from pretty pictures, this is all I took away from this thread, and now my excitement for BWO has been boosted that much more (assuming it's player-flyable).
-
Pilot done, lods and debris done. Just have to sort out a few small bits/colours and its complete.

Looking great man, really. Can't wait for a release.

That looks absolutely cinematic. Can't wait for release.
