Hey everyone,
I'm a newbie here and I wanted to drop by and say hi and ask a few questions as well as make a few observations.
First off I want to commend the team for taking on this project as I've always hoped someone would apply the Star Wars theme to the FreeSpace 2 engine.
As a FreeSpace fan and a fan of Lucasarts old Tiefighter and Xwing games I'm sure it's obvious to the rest of you that the golden age of Space Sims is behind us. It doesn't appear that any of the large commercial game producers will ever be making Space Sims again. So the hope of past fans rests squarely on the shoulders of the mod community. I'm guessing that the majority of the people who will eventually download this mod wlll be space sim fans first and Star Wars fans second. With that in mind, the original Tie Fighter and FreeSpace 2 games were lauded by the community, not only for their great space battles, but also for the strong story arc. So my hope for this mod is that there is an equal amount of thought going into the background story, the missions and the mission presentation as the 3d modeling and action. :)
I would like to try my hand at getting some models into the FreeSpace 2. Is there a webpage that details the steps of importing a 3d model and the fine points of polygon limits and normals?
Thanks,
rhettro

Fire the welcome beam!
...
oh, wait. I'm in the FS1 era.
Alright then, fire the welcome megafunk turret!
WELCOME TO THE HLP BB!
But seriously. Thanks for the praise, it's encouraging. I don't share your pessimism about the Space Sim genre being gone for good, but I definitely think it will be a long time before LucasArts puts out anything that isn't based on the prequels.
If you'd like to start modeling for the Freespace Engine, it's best to start at The Wiki. (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Modelling) I recommend simply using the package of your choice and designing for the forthcoming Collada converter, rather than struggling with TrueSpace or 3DS Max.
So, how much of the Freespace universe have you explored? Played the main campaigns, I hope?

Thanks for the reply. I would love to be proved wrong about the future of commercial Space Sims. :)
I'll start boning up on the Wiki. I'm well versed in several 3d modeling packages, Rhino being my favorite. If a standard converter is coming out, that would be great.
I've started off and on with FreeSpace 2 and I'm about halfway through the missions. But I recently installed FSOpen and have started from the begining again.

With FSPort, I hope.

FSPort?

Oh the port of FS1 to FS2. No I haven't done that, but now that I think of it, I probably should. It would be nice to have the full background story to FreeSpace.

Personally I don't consider FreeSpace 1 the "Backstory"
I consider it more of the real story, with FS2's story taking an odd left turn away from the atmosphere and ambience that made FS1 great.
Don't get me wrong, FS2 was good, but FS1 was great.

Yeah.

Okay, I took everyone's advice. I got FS1 install and I'm going to play through the complete series. Wish me luck. LOL
