Title: HEEEELP!
Post by: dekal on August 21, 2008, 06:36:42 pm
Anyone plz, i really need help on this one:

I downloaded a freespace 2 version from the underdogs. Evrything worked fine until i decided to install fso. I used taylor's installer and installed fso with some campaigns and the vp files. I began using the launcher and it told me that i needed opengl so i downloaded opengl v. 1.1 and then i discoverd that i needed v. 1.2. I didnt find the version so i used the other option, 3d something (cant remember the name). Everythin went smoothly until i actually played some of the new campaign missions and some of the original ones and they all eventualy freezed and crashed i even deleted evrything and downloaded all the files in the installer (except Vp advanced) and the same thing hapend. Even when selecting the no mods option in the launcher the game still crashes and freezes.  :confused:My graphic card is a fully upgraded S3 ProSavage DDR (quite old i know) but i find no reasons for the game to crash and freeze. Please i really want to play freespace 2 with fso, anyone can help??

OpenGL is a graphical API, much like Direct3D, which you are now using. OpenAL is an audio API. I do hope you have installed OpenAL since you really do have to install it. But OpenGL isn't something you need to install separately. It is nowadays included in the drivers of the graphics card. So, the logical course of action is to make sure you have the latest drivers installed for your graphics card.

On the other hand, I recall a case, where someone had the same graphics card, or at least some other Savage crap (no offense).

But yes. First, check the drivers. If they're up to date and still contain an old version of OpenGL... well, **** happens. In that case you either have to use Direct3D (which often doesn't work) or buy a new graphics card.

Oh, and taylor is a kick-arse dude, but Turey is the one who made the Installer.

Just read the case: battle of the wilderness, in which my S3 ProSavage friend seems to be the one causing all this mess since it just cant support OpenGl... since you guys are not messing with D3D anymore i think ill just play the retail version until i can buy a better graphic card. By the way, i have the fully upgraded S3 Prosavage and i also think i installed OpenAl so fso  is currently out of the question (i hope not) for now.

If some1 still has any ideas ill listen to them :)

PD: Sorry for the Turey-taylor issue (thanks Lobo)

No problem, happens all the freaking time. At least you spelled my name right.

Could you post the contents of freespace2\Installer\installedversions.txt and freespace2\Installer\installer_error.log.txt? I wanna make sure it's not an installation problem.
