Hey, all. I was thinking about Blue Planet and recalling the appearance of all the ships, and I was wondering how the design of some ships, like the Karuna, came about.
The Karuna reminds me of a ship in Babylon 5 that also has that spinning thing. Is that how it came about?
Where does the Vishnan Preserver ship come from? It definitely isn't from Inferno.
And what's with the Jetpack? Where did it come from?
-
The Vishnan Preserver? The gigantic ship in the penultimate mission?
That would be the Apocalypse. Originally it was a Terran super-juggernaut developed for MT, IIRC. Darius reskinned it.
The others I'm not sure about.
-
The Sanctuary fighters are from the Uglies pack, which I think was made by Vasudan Admiral.
I'm not sure where the GTD Orion Mk. II came from.
-
The Orion Phase II is made by Hamano, a Japanese guy.
The Karuna's probably inspired by the Omega frigate. I mean it looks like one.
The JetPac's Aldo's deathtrap ship. I think it was originally a joke...

Look at its tech description. I like that "Pathetic" armour rating too. :drevil:
-
I don't think the Karuna's grav deck really fits freespace, would probably be more suited for a TBP mod. The ship looks pretty fragile in general. But it's a decent looking ship none the less, good to see the fruits of someone's labours being put into a campaign.
-
Am I the only one who hates having the Karuna compared to that Babylon5 ship ( Omega? )?
-
It makes me think Stilletto from NEXUS if that makes you feel better Shadow
-
Am I the only one who hates having the Karuna compared to that Babylon5 ship ( Omega? )?
Normally I would sympathize given most "that looks like this" sort of comments are really grasping at straws and the author has little to say. But in this case, the Karuna is so obviously similar that I don't sympathize much at all :D
-
Also, Steve-O himself said that it was inspired by the Omega.
End of argument.

They're all from StratComm's Terran Fleetpack. Available on FSMods IIRC. They're retextured, of course.

The logistics ship was TrashMan's. Originally supposed to be a mining destroyer.
-
The Karuna is obviously a ripoff of the Alexei-Leonov.
-

The Anemoli? I like that ship. :D

Anemoi with an "i"!
Its not an animal! :P

...oops... :nervous:
-
There should be a Gargant or Gigas in the expansion
Or maybe a huge Vishnan superhive ship
Use that squid - looking one if necessary
You know what I'm talking about
-
Use that squid - looking one if necessary
The Sacred Keeper? That's a re-skinned ACa Akrotiri from INFR1.
-
I think he's talking about that giant Ancient installation "Pyrgos" from INFR1.
-
I just classified that thing Level Omega, just like the evil fellas at Command.
If seriously though, the last thing we need are super-giant ships. The Dante and the Vishnan ship at the end of BP were just for the plot- they weren't meant to kill each other. In my opinion, such giant ships shouldn't do battle in FS and die. They should be used for the story instead of battle and die purpose.
In other words, ships larger than 6km are not to die in FS. That goes for the Gigas, Gargant, Icanus, Apocalypse, Dante, Pyrgos and all the other ships that exceed the 6km length mark!
-
Well, just because they're props doesn't mean they can't die.
-
I'm saying that they SHOULDN'T die.
-
I'm saying that they CAN die.
-
Die... DIE (http://www.concert-pictures.com/rock/dir-en-grey/2006-09/Dir-En-Grey-Die-04.jpg) is a ****ing rockstar.
:nervous:
-
It is also a six to twenty-sided object used in games such as Snakes & Ladders. :D
-
You mean D&D?
-
I have no idea what that is.
By the way, is that "Scorched Earth" a ship model, or is it just a background?
-
The Scorched Earth is a background bitmap, IIRC.
-
I have no idea what that is.

No one in their right mind uses actual planet models anymore :doubt:

Why's that? Too laggy?
Naah. They just look bad, and if they are too far away, you can see weird artifacts on them. Basically, background bitmaps and skyboxes are much better options.
-
If WiH has a battle involving a Shivan ship PD class, my computer is totally screwed.
-
You mean like the SPD Whatsisname?
-
Yes, the one from Inferno R1.
-
I have no idea what that is.
Like, omg. You don't know Dungeons & Dragons?

That makes you a massively cooler person. :p

No. I really am an alien about it.
-
Dungeons and Dragons is very similar to Warhammer 40k table-top reading from Wikipedia.
-
I have no idea what Warhammer is either.
-
:shaking: Next you'll probably tell us that you don't know goatse, tubgirl, lemonparty and 2 girls 1 cup either.
...aand back on topic shall we return. Up and attem!
-
I have no idea what Warhammer is either.
I thought all Singaporean teenagers played MapleStory so much that their computers got taken away from their parents.
Well, it's what the Straits Times keeps saying anyway.
-
I know what goatse is because I've read about the P-P-P-Powerbook incident in Jeff Harris' PDF and Encyclopedia Dramatica. I never keep in touch with new games, simply because I don't have the funds to get the most powerful computer.
By the way, this (http://www.lares.dti.ne.jp/~hamano/FS/fs000.htm) is worth a look.
-
Uhh... Neither Warhammer nor D&D are new games. They're pretty damn old in fact.
-
When the thread the topic going, I show strong interest. [/japanese]
By the way this (http://www.lares.dti.ne.jp/~hamano/FS/fs000.htm) is worth a look.
Hamano's site, the creator of the Orion Phase II. It has some nice mods in there.
-
Most of them are splicings of retail models, though the Herc III is still a great model.
-
The Herc III should look more like the Herc II and not like F15 meets X-Wing.
The Boreas is outrageous. Just look at this (http://www.lares.dti.ne.jp/~hamano/FS/fire2.jpg). :wtf:
If the Ticonderoga was given a different skin, it might look pretty good for an old UEF ship. ;)
The Earthshaker is probably the most unusual weapon I've ever seen. Hamano probably didn't know that the GTVA made only 24 Aeolus cruisers, and that most of them were lost during the Second Shivan Incursion and NTF Campaign.
-

No, I think it looks A-1 Supar.

Well, it's not like you really needed to use the weapons supplied in the default TBL. Replace them with SGreens.
If the Ticonderoga was given a different skin, it might look pretty good for an old UEF ship. ;)
No, it wouldn't.

Well it was never converted for FS2 use anyway.
And I see what you did thar. Pre post edit. Smooth.
-
You mean that addition of a comma? Yeah, I don't like seeing grammatical errors in my recent posts (so shoot me). :blah:
-
Androgeos, you're lucky you don't know about that stuff. Its fun at first, but then it consumes you... the clothes you wear start to change. the friends you make become wierder. you'd rather spend hours in a dark basement talking about skull wizards and stuff, instead of spending a night in bed with a bikini model... :shaking:
-
Setting boundaries and mixing up hobbies helps. I prefer spending hours in a dark basement talking about skull wizards and stuff with a bikini model.

Dude... You're thirteen and you're sleeping with a bikini model? :wtf:
Well, at least you got a head start.

My dress code's been pretty consistent for the past half-decade. :D

Dungeons and Dragons is very similar to Warhammer 40k table-top reading from Wikipedia.
Haha, spoken like someone who obviously doesn't play either game.
Dungeons and Dragons is a game where a bunch of geeks and the occasional unattractive geek girlfriend sit around a table saying "I'm an elf paladin, I'm a halfing theif, I'm a gnomish druidess with a beard" and then roll dice for their fireballs and trying to be sneaky while one Geek Master is the story teller and all other characters combined.
Whereas 40K is a game where mostly little 12 year olds spend a ****load of their daddies money for little plastic soldiers and tanks which they paint and roll bucket loads of dice to blow up little space elves and evil space orcs into giblets.
Or let me put it this way. If 40K were a game, which it is, it would be an RTS (ie Dawn of War).
If D&D were a game, which it is, it would be an RPG ala Final Fantasy or MMO like Warcrack.
OR, if they were party games. D&D would be charades. While 40K would be Risk.
Both are full of geeks, but they're very different games.
-
that's not me, that's the kid that lives next-door.
-
Whereas 40K is a game where mostly little 12 year olds spend a ****load of their daddies money for little plastic soldiers and tanks which they paint and roll bucket loads of dice to blow up little space elves and evil space orcs into giblets.
This is the most accurate statement I have seen in a while.
-
You're correct, I don't play 40K myself, but uh . . . I know some people who just RAVE about whether Daemonhunters will win against Space Marines and how many Imperial Guardsmen can take down a Grey Knight Terminator.
Except where I live, 40K is such an unbelievably expensive game to play that . . . only students working part-time can even afford to get them. A small tube of glue costs $9.95 if you can beat that :)
And for Maplestory, I just don't get the attraction of that game though I am a Singaporean kid.
PS: What's the point of 40K or DD when there's Freespace? ;)
-
I've given up on MapleStory completely after I felt it took too long to level up. :blah:
Darius, where do you get your ship names from?
-
So it is true that all Singaporean kids play MapleStory day and night.
-
No real theme to the names. Mostly aspects of New Age, Buddhist, Hindu and Christian religion.

No. Asian kids play it day and night, and say: "Give me your chippies and I'll give a witch-armour (whatever it is) or gold"
They can spend 4 hours straight playing it. Weird. 2-D graphics too. :ick:
Have you heard the education system in Singapore? There really is no time to play games. Not even for 5 minutes.

You're insulting my species. I think... :nervous:
And FYI, Singaporeans are considered Asians.
Why the hell are we on this topic anyway?
-
Where does the name "Renjian" come from?
-
It's actually supposed to be "Ren Jian". I'll leave someone who speaks mandarin to translate it :D

I thought that was spelled as "Renjie" in hanyu pinyin...
-
Can you confirm it for me please? My sources tell me it's "jian" in hanyu pinyin.

Here you go. (http://www.chineselanguage.org/dictionaries/ccdict/view.php?query=754C&encoding=text&mode=english&lang=en&beijing=pinyin&canton=jyutping&meixian=pinjim&sound=0&fields=mandarin,english)

Now I see how Snail got Man-Sword from "Ren Jian"
I'll keep the name Ren Jian though, since I originally was looking for "humanity", which comes under "Ren Jiān" (Human Unite)

Lovely.
I think Renjian is a nicer name too.

Hmm ... just had a thought. Are those little six-engined things in this (http://blueplanet.hard-light.net/indus1.jpg) screenshot the GTT Corsair? They seem to be about the same size, and appear to have the same engine configuration.

Maybe it's that fighter used in Transcend that looks like a DS9 runabout.
-
The Kelpie?
-
The Kelpie?
Yeah something like that. It's got a buttload of engines on the back anyway. Not sure if it's 6 or 8. So it could fit that screenshot.
-

Yeah something like that. It's got a buttload of engines on the back anyway. Not sure if it's 6 or 8. So it could fit that screenshot.
But they're not in the right configuration. The Kelpie has several engines of various sizes. The ships in the screenshot appear to have all of their engines the same size, positioned with four like the Elysium and two off to the sides and forward a bit, and they are all roughly the same size. Besides, they look too big to be fighters. I stand by my guess that is the Corsair.
-
Probably Darius changed it slightly to fit his faction.
-
I don't think its the Kelpie.
The Kelpie's a fighter. All the UEF Fighters are revealed already.
I'm more likely to bet its a Corsair, as there's not small transport for the UEF revealed yet. All then have is the Upanishad, which is cruiser sized.
-
Very perceptive :) They are Corsairs.
Though I'm not sure that mission is going to be in the campaign now, since I lost all of it :( it was a nice mission too. Ah well. The next one will be even better.
-

Judging by the caption, it looked like an interesting twist in the plot... ;)
-
bloodthirsty earthers... hmmm..
-
So are most (if not all) of the UEF fighters Steve-O's creations? Or are there a few designs in there we haven't seen yet? (or, had the chance to play with, rather than seen)
-

All the fighters/bombers we've seen so far are by Steve-O. Beyond that, only Darius knows ;)
-
OK. On the advice of Stormkeeper, I am asking this question in this thread:
Will there be any new GTVA ships in BP:WiH?
-
If the story calls for new ships, then sure.
-
If the story calls for new ships, then sure.
Well, does it? :P
-
I would think so. :p Though probably not alot.
-
You wouldn't need too much of an excuse to add a supporting vessel or two.
Probably something small, like an auxilliary freighter/transport, science vessel (although it'd be odd having a science vessel on the front lines), or the like. A new fighter or bomber wouldn't be too hard to justify, either.
Edit: or a support ship, to replace the Hygeia...
Another Edit: Will the UEF have their own support ship, too? Maybe something with 1 or 2 turrets, that'd be a nice change.
-
Support ships shouldn't have any armament. The only reason they can carry so much ammo in such a small place is cause they don't need no weapon systems and etc. I think it was stated so by canon, but I could be wrong I guess.
-
Aye, but it wouldn't be too hard to make a slightly large support ship (still about the same size, though), and add maybe a Terran Turret or Terran Turret Weak to it (or whatever the faction uses)...
Anyway, I think giving the UEF its own support ship is something that ought to be done (unless Darius has something better in mind), and turrets or no turrets should be secondary to that.
Also, for a real-life comparison, present-day refueling ships are somewhat larger than fighters, not smaller or equal size like the support ships in FreeSpace.
-
Do note, however, that the GTS Centaur of FS1 is still the smallest Terran support ship to date. ;)
If the UEF has its own support ship, it may probably be a heavily modified version of the Centaur.

Bah. Don't remind me of the Elysium. :blah:
Huh?
-
The Elysium has a protruding (laser) turret at the top.
-
/me remembers when he first discovered the Elysium actually had a turret, and was like "whoa... this changes my perspective on EVERYTHING"
I once made a mission in FS1 with an Elysium armed with a Shivan Super Laser.
-

Bah. I strapped a modified BFRed to that thing and made the mission objective to escort the Elysium. The BFRed was allowed to attack fighters, with no recharge time. :drevil:
-
Yes well FS1 doesn't exactly have BFReds, so that really wasn't an option.
-
Bah. I strapped a modified BFRed to that thing and made the mission objective to escort the Elysium. The BFRed was allowed to attack fighters, with no recharge time. :drevil:
What? The energy ball of the BFRed is nearly 3/4's the size of the Elysium itself!
So, how did it go? ;)
-
It was a BRBOD. Big Red Ball Of Death. :drevil: I'll see if I can wrangle up some screenshots, post it in the celebration thread.
-
I wonder... does touching the muzzle glow of a beam hurt you? Like, if I made a beam with a beam length of almost zero, but a huge muzzle glow, what would happen?
-
Nothing. Believe me. I know. Just don't ask me what the hell I was doing.
-

Like Stormkeeper said, it doesn't scratch your fighter, but unfortunately you have a very BIG chance of either
- Colliding with the Ravana/whatever and on medium that's not what you want to do
- You get hit. BOOM!!
-
I'd love to have an skp. of the Orion Mk II... It seriously needs some love...

Hey, Spectre, did you manage to figure out the crash issue with the Sanctuary?
You haven't gotten to any of the really good parts of the campaign, and while you weren't the biggest fan, I still think you'd really like some of the later missions and music.
-
Well, I like the combat (dual Balors rocks!!) and music a lot, but I guess the whole story is just a no-go for me. And yeah, I've sorted out the problem with the Sanctuary mission, but now I'm having problems with the Forced Entry mission.. My flagship gets butchered by the Ravana before I can do anything about it.. I know it's a bug, but bug aside that mission needs some tweaking (The flagship could really use some more HP to start with :ick:)
-
Beware that the Orion Phase II is just a retail Orion with some new chunks stuck on it ... but I'll try to get that SKP when I get home.
-

It's not a bug -- but you do need to be either lucky or precognitive. Save some Trebuchets throughout the mission and use them to take out all four of the Ravana's beams.
You can then enjoy the sight of those long-range attack missiles you dreamed about (though probably not as many as you'd like.)

I still can't see the difference between the Orion Phase II and the Orion Mark II. They're two different ships, but they seem quite similar in appearance as far as I can recall.

Giant revolver on the nose, for one.
Give that beam a rest.

It's a different beam. Don't worry, I won't use that again any time soon.
The revolver is on the Phase II, right?

Ooooh. Yes! I'm sorry, I misread your post.
I believe the revolver is on the Phase II.

Thanks. I always confuse TrashMan's Orion with Hamano's Orion, so don't be too surprised if I ask again next year. :nervous:
