Hasn't anybody noticed a huge resemblance between the shivans and the killer robots in descent 2 and 3. On the cover for descent 2 there is a robot that looks like a shivan ship. In descent 3 you can clearly see that some of the ominous red and black robot look just like shivans.
most of the stuff this web page is theoretical but it has one very good point worth noting ( http://64.92.160.252/wiki/index.php/Shivans ) , " It has been suggested that what we have actually seen have been either robots or organic creatures in some sort of exo-skeleton." They say there is no reason to support this hypothesis. Well, now there is. I submit that the virus infected robots bent on killing humans are the same robots encountered in DESCENT: freespace, and DESCENT: freespace 2

The admins here don't like welcome speeches anymore, but jr2 has gathered them all here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39765.0.html). Enjoy your stay!
I've never played Descent, but since FS and D were made by the same company, it's very plausible that there are some resemblances.
-
er..what? its not a welcome speech. If you want ill take out the first bit.

No. What he's saying is that, previously when a new user joined and first posted, other people would both display that "welcome" graphic and list some big long "welcome to the HLP, blah blah blah blah blah" for like 15 lines of incomprehensible drivel. But they don't like that anymore. Because new users got confused, and bombarded with a bunch of irrelevant stuff instead of people actually talking about their post (or more often a question)
So yeah, nothing wrong on your part.
I've never really played much of Descent either. So can neither confirm nor deny your thoughts. But Descent and Freespace are supposed to be different universes entirely as far as I know.
-
And yet again we see why we said we don't like welcome speeches.
Dragging the conversation back on topic....

That is basically :v:'s answer to people suggesting that the creatures seen in the Hallfight cutscene were robots or creatures in power suits. My guess is :v: got sick of people thinking that they'd done something as unoriginal as robots or power suits and tried to kill the discussion by stating in FS2 that the Shivans were neither.
Of course in order to not make it sound like "The Word Of God" they put it in in-universe terms which people now use to speculate that the Shivans in Hallfight were robots or creatures in power suits.
Some days it really sucks to be a developer. :p

Actually I think Shivan are the good guys..they saved GTVA from being killed by supernova by herding them with juggernauts in FS2...
-
Problem was, it was them that caused said Supernova, so they weren't really helping.
As for Shivans being the Good Guys or not, I suppose that is, as Obi-Wan would say, a matter of perspective ;)

Tell that to the Capellan refugees. :D

It's a safe bet to say that probably only the HoL and the Shivans themselves think themselves as the good guys.
BTW don't listen to Obi-Wan - listen to Darth Vader YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARK SIDE!!!

It seems to me Shivans have far superior technologies than GTVA and they have mastered subspace travel(jump without gate or nodes), they could annihilate GTVA and exterminate its population whenever they want, but instead they do craps like sorting NTF out and attacking the sun in GTVA's Capellan system which caused the supernova, which is unexplainable..
-
I don't think that the Shivans had anything to do with the downfall of the NTF, if their operations were mainly based in Capella, Gamma Draconis and the nebula. Probably what you meant was their involvement in Bosch's ETAK project?

Wheee (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Snail%27s_Theory)
-
Yep, that and destroying trinity and possibly other NTF vessels in nebula.

Oh . . . RIGHT! My mistake

Excellent work.

Have you ever played FS1?

DESCENT: freespace, and DESCENT: freespace 2
It is good to keep in mind that FreeSpace had (on some parts of the world) the prefix "Descent" solely for the sake of avoiding legal issues with the software known as FreeSpace. On other parts of the world it was known as Conflict: FreeSpace (The Great War). And FreeSpace 2 was just FreeSpace 2. No "Descent" there.
-
Yeah, FreeSpace 2 was just FreeSpace 2, no Descent/Conflict or anything else.

It was partly that and partly to get fans of the Descent series interested in the game. I vaguely remember hearing that early drafts were in the Descent universe but that they quickly grew past that point and decided to make their own universe for it but I can't remember if that was a fact or fanon.
-
I'm sure lots of people would find it really cool if we could see some early incarnations of the FS universe.

good thing too. if they had never put the word "descent" in it I would have never found out about it. I was searching for descent [].
