Title: Widescreen & DVD Question
Post by: Joey on August 27, 2008, 04:36:03 pm
First of all the MOD looks AMAZING!  I'm having a bit of trouble downloading it because I'm having internet issues at the moment.  Hopefully a friend will be able to download it for me.  I have some questions and I apologize if it has be answered already.  I tried doing a search but my internet is very slow and takes forever to load a page.  Again, I'm sorry if it's an inconvenience.    :(

1) Does the final game support Widescreen monitors?  If it doesn't, are there any programs that I can use that will let me play it in Widescreen (and can you provide a link to it?)

2) Should I download the Full mod's (790 MB) exe. file?  Or should I wait for the DVD to be released?  And will the DVD be free to download?

3) Is it true that I don't need a copy of Freespace 2 to play this MOD?

I appreciate your patience and any help you can provide me.  Thank you.  :)

Someone with more insight to the heart and soul of TBP should comment on whether I'm a dirty liar or not, but if recent builds can be used without hassle with TBP, you could download the Recommended build for Windows users from my signature. That, and several other 3.6.10 builds, supports widescreen (and any non-4:3) resolutions. Naturally the HUD and all the interface art will be stretched, but other graphical glitches (such as wandering suns) are no more.

3) Is it true that I don't need a copy of Freespace 2 to play this MOD?
Again I'd like to point out the difference between a mod and a total conversion. And the reason why we have these two terms.

A modification, or a mod, is an add-on that changes some aspects of the game or adds new content. It is used in conjunction with the original game.

A total conversion, or a TC, is like an extreme case of a mod. It completely replaces all previous contents, such as ships, textures, sounds, interface, the whole lot. A TC is an independent release and does not require the original game. And actually a TC should not be mixed up with the original game, since that undoubtedly causes error.

Short answer: Yes. It is true that you don't need FreeSpace 2 to play TBP. Or did you think that the creators of TBP (and the rest of us) would just rancidly lie to people?

The official answer to this is no.  I use a widescreen monitor just fine with TBP but most don't.   As Lobo said nothing prevents you from using a newer build with widescreen support.  This is not a supported solution so if it doesn't work don't bother asking why.

2) Should I download the Full mod's (790 MB) exe. file?  Or should I wait for the DVD to be released?  And will the DVD be free to download?

That is up to you.  It will be a free download just like the installer.  Only difference is it will contain lots of extras and be in DVD format.

3) Is it true that I don't need a copy of Freespace 2 to play this MOD?

Nope don't need FS2 installed at all to play.  Although I have no idea why anyone wouldn't want FS2.

Thank you very much for the replies.  I guess I'll wait until they release the DVD version.  Is there any release date for it?  I can certainly wait for it regardless how long it takes.  Thanks again.  :)
