So, I was wondering if there has ever been a feature where I could talk into my microphone, and have them execute commands, like, " Destroy Target " While targeting a hostile, would they attack it? I thought of this when I saw " Voice Recognition " In the FSOpen menu.
And, when you achieve Admiral ( My highest rank is Commander :blah: ) does the guy REALLY say, " Now go read a book " ?
If so, how do you achieve more " Points " ? Just from killing enemies, or giving orders, or what?

Yes, the voice recognition feature does exactly what you're describing. I don't think that most recent builds have it enabled; in fact, I'm not quite sure if the feature is even functioning properly in the codebase anymore, or how to tweak it if is. Hopefully, someone with a bit more knowledge will be able to help you out with that.
You do receive points from killing enemy ships (the number depends on what type of ship; obviously, destroyers count for a lot more than fighters), but you can also receive them from completing mission objectives. A mission designer can assign a specific number of points to each objective; most would probably assign more points to particularly difficult objectives.
And yes, the book line is real. Perhaps even better was the promotion line in FS1, which accused you of cheating if you managed to make Admiral. :p

I think voice recognition is possible, but I've never tried it - you might find this thread useful http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,54177.0.html (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,54177.0.html)
As for the book thing, yeah, it is true. You can read em all on the wiki.
I think you can get points for kills and completing objectives. This page tells you the kill values http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Ranks (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Ranks)
Hope this helps. :)
Edit: Whops, beaten to it. :nervous:

Alright, thanks for the help. :D
Do I still get points if I am in cheat mode? I ran a quick test in a mission I FREDed, in which I BFRed'd a Sath. I didn't rank up afterward.
-
Voice recognition requires a build with the code compiled in. MSVC 2005 complains at me if I try so therefore only builds which I could kick and punch MSVC 6 into building properly will work.
The stand alone fixes build I made a while back should definitely have it in as does 3.6.9 official.
As for the cheat mission - You don't get promoted for flying simulator missions. :p
-
You could make it into a one-mission campaign, and then you would get the points.
-
Except that damage from beams doesn't count towards kills, so shoot it with a Subach and then BFRed it.
-
Make a hostile drone worth an incredibly high ammount of points. Make that mission into a campaign. Start campaign, shoot drone.
Congratulations Admiral, you achieved the highest rank in the GTVA by destroying a ****ing drone. Hope you are happy Admiral cheater.

Actually, only damage from beam turrets don't count towards kills. Beams as primaries do. (Same applies when you give a fighter a capital ship beam).
-
Beams on a fighter or bomber anywhere count. Beams on a capship only count in very recent 3.6.10 builds if a certain AI_Profiles setting has been set.

Interesting! Thanks.
