Hey all,
It's been a LONG TIME since I played this Space Sim when it first came out. Now I wanna get back into it and Downloaded the installer, etc.
Anyhow, I finally got it all installed into my F:\Games\FreeSpace2\ Directory and it wont launch as it says: Fred2 cannot be opened in a root directory?
Anyone know what this means?
Thanks and hello
Jadehawk

I take it you are talking about FS2_Open. Are you running launcher.exe? FRED2 is the retail mission editor. Launcher.exe is the configuration and game launcher. FS2_Open_3.6.xx is the game. FRED2_Open_3.6.xx is the SCP mission editor.

OK thanks for the reply, I'll give it a shot. :)

Oh man how much I MISSED this Space Sim! Ever since my last post, been playing this sim until now as I'm taking a break. WHEW!
Brings back lots of memories when this first came out and missed making missions for it as well. I even found my original FRED manuscript I printed out I stored away.
I made a Shivan Carrier once in MAYA, it's nothing but a CG wireframe model and on my old puter that I need to fix. Someday. :)

I take it you got it working then.

I have the same problem. I have three executables: Fred2, Freespace2, and FS2. Freespace2 and FS2 seem to do the same thing: first produce the graphical launch window, but when play is pressed it produces this fred error. Fred does in fact run.
I don't have any other executables to try in the main directory. I have gone through the config step. The files are not in root but c:\games\freespace2 as required by the automatic installer. What else can I try?
-
Well there isn't a launcher for all OS but there is for most. If you aren't running windows then you may not have a launcher.exe. If you are and you don't have one then I suggest you re-run the installer.

Hey that's great, recently the community (specifically Spicious) has been working to get models from Maya into Freespace a lot easier. So finish that baby up when you get the motivation.

Thanks all and just got off playing the game. Man O man! 7 hours of non stop playing! Am I nuts or what? ;) Yes I got it working Big grin here!
I didnt know if Maya was used to make models here as most appear to use 3D Max. I happen to have taken some classes years ago and need to fire that sucker up and relearn it again. First things first! ;)
Thanks again all!

Don't run FS2 from the launcher, go into that folder and run the fs2.exe file. If that runs the problem is your icon. Right click on it and choose properties. Check that the Start In option is pointing at c:\games\freespace2
Once you do that you should be able to run it via the launcher

Umm... did I understand correctly that this person used the Installer but is still playing retail? May I know why?
-
SharpFish only seems to have retail. He says he only has 3 executables. Jadehawk was the one who used the online installer and got everything.
-
Oops. Sorry, my bad. :nervous:

Easy mistake to make when someone does a thread hijack. ;)
Of course we should have both been telling SharpFish to get FSO from the link in your signature anyway. :)
-
Well,I'm not sure what the difference is in any detail but I re-ran the installer and it added some files, including the launcher, and all is well. Thanks for the help.

If you mean installer detail, I can understand that...
If you mean game play detail, well, you'll find out soon enough! ;)
