How do i make AAAf sentry guns? Is it a simple case of changing the ship.tbl?

Yes. Whatever weapon you put in the sentry guns turrret will be the default one.
You can also change that in-mission (FRED), rather than make a new ship type.

Which gun and what weapon do you want on it. It might be as simple as changing the turret type in FRED or using a change weapon sexp (can't remember the exact name of it right now).

IIRC a ship requires the flag "cruiser" or above to use beams.

Bombers with beam turrets use them just fine. See SB Yali and SB Vidhyachal...

Just label a sentry gun "cruiser" in the tables if FRED2ing doesn't work.

But you should beam-protect them then, since beam-freed capital ships will fire capital beams at them...

I keep on tripping myself up by not changing both the mediavp ship.tbl and the one FRED uses , must remember... :nervous:

Well all beams in FS2 have "Big ship" attached to them so bombers can't use them. Once you take away that flag (I think) it all works fine.

So if the Yali or somesuch bomber has a beam on a turret what could the player do with that gun anyway? Turret weapons typically fire whenever they damn well please. If I was flying a beam bomber I'd want to fire my beam not watch it fire whenever it feels like it.

Heh...well, I hacked the POF in PCS2 so that the beams are primary banks.
Its fun to fly then :P (the beam weapon itself is obviously modified so you can't spam it).
