Title: I need some spaceship models for a web comic!
Post by: Max Sterling on September 05, 2008, 11:28:49 pm
Hey all,

I'm starting a new web comic called The Great Space Race. I'm the writer and I'm working with an artist, Dave. Anyway, he mentioned he would like to use some 3D ship models for the other ships that are in the race, and he'd love to have a model of his own. So... got any cool Freespace ships you'd like to share? You'd get credit for your work on the links page or in the blog, however you wanted it. Here is the site, we don't have any comics up yet but you can see the Character breakdown:

http://thegreatspacerace.com/

It's basically about a big rally race in space. Scale doesn't matter, we can scale them. What is the prevalent file format for 3d models now? Still 3ds? Anyway, here is the main crew's ship, the Amanda Noire:

If anyone would like to take on the Amanda, that would be awesome and we'd really owe you. You can email me at the address in my profile if you want to direct send some files. Thanks all, for your help!

I'll make a deal with you.

I'll provide you a model I love and cherish, but you have to texture the freaking thing.

Give me credit for the model, give the texturer credit for the texture and if I like it, could you please send me a copy? I'm having great difficulty.

I'm in for the Amanda. Any drafts for the underneath?

You shuld stick the Perseus and Myrm in there.  (I know the Myrm isn't that fast, but it has enough engines to look fast)

Well, you're free to use any FS2 ships of mine.

Hm...I have also this, but am not sure about giving it away yet.

I moved the thread to Fan Fiction and Art forum, because, you know, it doesn't seem to have much to do with modding FreeSpace itself. :)

Warp Shadow - texture it? Gosh it will be like the old days when I was doing the MOD and I had to  do all the textures. I don't have the tools anymore to do it! But I'll take a look at it anyway.

peterv - That is great news! No, we didn't draw a bottom of the ship! Either make up whatever you like, or we can do one for you, let me know! :)

TrashMan - That is a nice looking ship. If you let us use it it doesn't mean you can't use it in FS2 or whatever else you planned for it. As for your other ships, where do I find them? :)

Retsof - I need original ships, not something Volition owns, want to avoid any infringement. They don't have to "look" like racing ships because in space there's no air and all that plus a lot of the race is FTL so they just warp or whatever. So we can use lots of different looking ships, that's what we are going for.

Herra Tohtori - Yes, I know, but I saw a similar thread (Want to get your Models in a full game?) in that forum and the people I really want to see this are people who have made FS2 spaceships, so I thought it was the best forum to find them in it. I hope they can find me here! Fortunately I've already got some responses.

Hmm, indeed. Maybe I should move that thread to Gaming forum now that you mentioned it.

Anyways, the modding forum visitors will still see a link to this thread on where it used to be, so I think they'll find you here.

Does Amanda Noire intentionally look like a land-based sports car?

And given that drawing and a whole crew for a ship, I take it they are a bit bigger and not fighter-sized. Hmmm....

Yes! It is supposed to vaguely look like a car, as will SOME of the other ships, but not all. For instance, I'm liking two of your ships: GTTB Armageddon and GVF Reshef

I'd love to download models for them. And the scale is okay because I can just size it for the artist in the panels, there's no set scale it has to go to. I'd say the ships are probably about as big as 4 bombers put together, up to twice that size.

I wonder if I could use the POF viewer for renders for my artist, or is there a good model viewer out there?

Well duh the GTTB Armageddon would be more like a sixteen-wheeled truck :nervous:

Not exactly... it will be a comedy though, sort of in the way Firefly is a comedy but also a drama.

Hmm I have one ship model... WIP though, that looks more like a fast carrot in space, sort of. :p
It was supposed to be in a short film my friend was planning to make but I think it's still in a planning state. Lemme ask if he still plans to make it or not.

It's a bit simple model I suppose, but it was supposed to be a fast ship.

Here you go. I tweaked it a little big so now it look like a bigger ship.

Gortef -- Sure, I'll take a look at it! Long time no see bro! I have a fan film I just made from Robotech, I'll try to find the forum to post it in for you :)

Trashman, thanks! I kind of need a 3ds and a POF viewer now, could someone link me up please?

Rgr that, I'll ask my friend if he still needs it or not. If not I'll clean it up a bit and post a pic.

Long time no see indeed, according to the topics you have made here things are going well on your end ^^

Just read the comics.  Not bad, but I find it a little weird that the bridge is a big holotank or something.

You have to wait to find out what the deal is with the bridge. It's not weird, it's ORIGINAL ;)

You still open for models?  I might just whip something up for this.  I'm thinking blocky with lots of engines.

Here's three ships I'll donate for the comic. They're not textured, so if you use them I'd like copies of them with textures. :)

Number 111 started life as one of the more crappy parts from DOGA. After geometry corrections and very extensive changes and additions it became Number 111. The two powerful beam cannon and two side weapon bays (the red bits) plus (literally) tons of armor make this a formidable opponent. However, the engines are a bit undersized for its mass, making it not a good choice for chasing down fighters. It works very well for planetary defense, protection of space stations and asteroid mines as well as interdiction of pirates or shipping. This design should prove useful against capital ships if accompanied by about 1/3 to 1/2 its numbers in fast fighter escort. The heavy armor helps it survive while the escorts take care of any pests.

Number 52's three engine cover/pods are extensively rebuilt and enhanced from a DOGA part. The nozzles poking out the back are my creation. Then I used three copies of that at 120 degree angles and built the rest of the ship from scratch. The pics here show it armed with two MLS missile pods (could also mount energy or kinetic weapons in them) on the sides and a rotary magazine ordnance pod ventrally. In one view there's a cargo container on the bottom, which can also be used in the side positions. Stripped down it can take the role of a racer or fast courier. Racked up with three cargo pods it can haul small loads of time-sensitive cargo. Fully equipped with weapons it becomes a fighter/bomber. Or you can fit it with any combination of additions, though asymmetrical loadouts should be avoided.

Almost all of the parts included with the freeware DOGA L1 have extensive geometry problems like disconnected verts and edges, overlapping faces and single-sided faces sticking out in the wind. I've fixed up several of them and some of those I've gone on to fix up into complete ship models.

Sleek is not a fighter at all. It's a rich kid's speedster. With five engines it's fast but quite short ranged though that can be extended by using only the center engine. The side engine pods are separate objects so they can be changed for other engines or things like weapons pods or extended range tanks can be mounted between the engines and the body. I suppose it could have a couple of weapons stuffed into the nose... somehow. For the most range, jettison the side engines to drop a lot of mass, and a lot of cash for replacement parts.

Sorry, I didn't see any replies for a while.

Um... I don't know how to anti-alias my renders cause the Amanda ship is a POF and I can only render it in the POF constructor. Any ideas?

Anyway... the new animated special is up! Check it out.

It will get better as we go along, for sure.

Turn on driver level anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering and other fancy options if you can (and if you have any NVidia or AMD graphics card, you can unless you're on Mac, in which case there might be... a complication :drevil:)... The PCS rendering window is like any 3D application - the GPU will take care of some level of AA then.

At any rate, PCS isn't really built to be a rendering platform. You should learn to use some free 3D program...

yes, peter, send me the 3DS! Thanks!

I went into my 3D settings and turned up Anti-aliasing, it looks GREAT! Thanks!

Nice drawing so far...one minor nitpick - in one of the first scene, your scale is waaaaay off.

The ship chasing the heros looks like it's 100X the size of their ship. It's a race, they're bound to have some size-class rules.
