And so me and a friend were playing the campaign online when we were faced with the impossible task of distracting the Shivian Fleet from the other jump nodes where a Sathanas jumped in and proceeded to pummel the Colossus to death. We jumped onto the task and managed to destroy the four beam cannons just before they could fire again and take down the Colossus. After that it just seemed to wander about unsure of what to do. We destroyed it and had to exit because we had the choice of either:
A. Going AWOL and being executed.
- OR -
B. Destroying the GTVA's largest warship, killing over 30 000, and getting a pat on the back for it too.
Personally I think the MP mission has some major bugs in it.
ADDENDUM: The Colossus did fire it's beam cannons many times, but the AOA (Angle of Attack) restricted most cannons due to their firing arcs.
Screenshots (sorry, the blastwave from the Sathanas blew me to hell so I missed it):

What about the Saths fifth Beam Cannon.
-
that one's at the back
-
And hence out of arc.

Well, I do remember someone saved Capella once ... i.e the supernova failed to trigger.
-
That would be Grey Wolf.
-
You've doomed us all!!!!! Now instead on 80 Juggernauts they'll send hundreds. There will be supernova's all over the place.
-
Hey, what's special about your radar? How did you do that? I'm new here.
Also, lmao at saving the Colossus. First time I've ever heard of that.
-
it's on multiplayer, but it was simply converted, not rebaleced. meanng its easy to do, and not atapted to having ore than one intelligent ship out in the field.
and the radar is a SCP-optional feature.
-
How do I do it? what's the function of it?
-
Download FS2Open and enable the '3d radar' flag in the launcher.
If you have a good computer, get the MediaVPs to make the game prettier.

Check The Classics. Also, if you want to save Capella, read the Apocalypse article on FreeSpace Wiki. I tried it out once and I saved everyone except the Terrans on the Lemnos and the Vasudans on the Ptah-Nu. :D
-
You disarmed ALL 4 cannons so fast?! With a fighter?!
If you only could do that with all 80...
-

As more or less approved geek, I'll have to point out the plural of supernova is supernovae.

As a person who gladly approves loanwords, "supernovas" is also acceptable.
-
No, it shouldn't.
-
Why?
-
It's not funny.
At least, not as funny as the void of spam thread.
-
Meh. I did that many months ago. I took two screenshots(exploding Sathanas and death camera with the debris clearly visible in the background), too. Let's see if I can find them but I'm afraid they're gone due to the repair op of my PC. Anyway, just ike you, I've been destroyed by the exploding Sathanas.
So no, I'm the true Savior of the Colossus! :P
BTW this reminds me the Colossus' strange behavior when fighting the first Sathanas. In Retail FS2 the Colossus' maneuver was regular while in FSO it's not(the Colossus shakes for a while or moves strangely). More than funny things to look at these seem minor FSO bugs, IMO. ;)
EDIT: No offense to the coders... :)

Convenient.
-
Meh, I did it in 1889, a few days after Hitler was born (April 56th I believe). I used ~+Shift+I on the Colossus and ~+K on the Sathanas. I took 500 screenshots using the German translation of FS2, but when the Nazi party came into power they didn't approve of the mission's name and a few others foretelling their defeat in WW2 (Their Finest Hour and Dunkerque) and so some stormtroopers came along and burned my PC.
-
:wtf:
I was serious...
-
But you do understand that the lack of evidence does not bode well for your credibility, right?
-
Not only that, but I'd like to know exactly how you disabled all 4 beams within 60 seconds.
-
Why would I come out with that claim, then?
I didn't disable the Sathanas beams, at least not at the beginning. I disabled the LRed because it was a bit disturbing.
The Colossus survived because the Sathanas moved on its side. During most part of the maneuver it fired some BFRed shots which inflicted serious damage, but they weren't enough to take the Colossus down. It took a while to destroy the Sathanas(I didn't even use time compression) and I remember that the Boanerges-class bombers helped a bit, at least in disarming some turrets.
EDIT: The Juggernauts were close enough to fire with their blob turrets, I remember that I took down a few of them to help the Colossus.
As you can see this description of the events is too detailled to be invented. Two posts ago I said that certain things didn't use to happen in Retail. When the Colossus survived I was using FSO and seriously wondered what new players would think of it(ex. "Ehm, the Sathanas moved sidewards...and now? :wtf:").
-
The Sathanas in that mission I think has "Attack Colossus" orders which may have made it become retarded.
-
Like the Colossus in High Noon its orders are to attack the Sathanas and performs a maneuver on the side of its target.
It's not impossible.
-
I haven't done it, but my friend who introduced me to Hard-Light a few years ago managed to do it once. He had them all down before it could get a shot off. Kinda scary really.
-
Ah so this is where Pine posted, I was the "friend" who helped. He bullied me into doing it as well, cos the Juggernaut jumped in and I said "There is no way you are going to destroy that thing, the Colossus will DIE!" and he said "We may as well TRY" and it was only when he took down 2 of the 5 beam turrets I thought "wow he might do this" and helped take out the last 3 and the laser turrets too.
In other words ITS ALL HIS FAULT BLAME HIM :D

Welcome to the HLPBB! :D
May I know if you ordered the Boanerges to destroy some turrets for you during the mission?

I once violated a sath.
Mobius, you should take out the sath in high noon also.
-
This makes me think the campaign should be tweaked to allow you to save the Colossus. Anyone think that's possible? The overall outcome would have to remain unchanged of course.
-
I think it's critical to the overall message and arc of FS2 (a story about human and Vasudan hubris) that the Colossus die ingloriously.
-
Dunno. It could work, if there was a scenario, where Alpha wing & Co. give it everything they've got and barely manage to save the Colossus only to have it being wiped out by three more Sathanases that jump in. There'd be some "You can't win, you wankers!" feeling in that, too.
-
OMG that would be so awesome, to get a split second feeling of excitement and relief, only to have it taken away again. I almost wish :v: had taken that into account and done something like that.
-
Follows the thread's general direction...
Alpha 1 kills the beams and gets a promotion for saving the Colossus. Then A1 destroys the Sath with the help of the Big C, after which 2 transports with parts arrive and fix it's engines. The mission lasts for 3 hours, but ends with the Big C warping out to friendly space in one piece...
And in the mean time the Bastion is without the help of Alpha wing, and gets shipwrecked by the Shivans miles before the jump node, leaving a corridor to friendly space open.
In the debriefing Command informs the player that the Shivans made contact with the GTVA.
They said: "You can't win, you wankers!"

Aww cack, soprry dude
I'm gonna be finding my "mystery shot" posts for a while...:nervous:
-
campaign is great as it is, it's a shame only 30.000 GTVA crewmen died in that battle... It should have been a bigger number.

hmm?
-
That's a really small number for a 6km long ship.
-
I don't see how changing the number is going to mean anything, the ship is the ship and that's as much compassion or empathy that the player is going to have for it.
-

I do hope that was sarcasm.
They did something like that. They threw a Ravana at it, and then threw a Sath at it.
-
They should've thrown a Demon at it too.
-

Demon's crap on the attack, it can only bring one LRed and one SRed to bear. What's impressive about that?
-
One LRed can still do a considerable amount of damage.
-
A single LRED is better than a BFGREEN, since it basically never stops firing.
-

hmm?
More ships to the slaughterhouse, that's what I ment.
In FS1 an entire planet was laid to waste, in this version only a handfull of escaping ships and a terran-vasudan jug was lost (outside of almost totally evacuated capella, lets just say that I would rather lose that sistem that my homeplanet).
that's almost the last mission, it should be really intense so that everyone remembers it for decades.
Where's the CAP'S to CAP'S battle in volition's missions?? none of their's involve more that 5 or 6 cap ships in simultaneous action.
-
You get shot down by random bolts too easily if in a BOE-type battle is you remain there too long?
-

Considering our thoughts on how GTVA ships are designed, probably not. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,54518.msg1109533.html#msg1109533)

Are we ever given actual figures on exactly how evacuated Capella is? As in, what percentage has been evacuated and what percentage as not, or what number of people? I don't recall as I haven't played the main campaign in some time.
-
For some reason, I feel like one of the command briefings stated that the vast majority of its 250 million people had managed to be evacuated by the time the final Shivan influx began.

I think the evacuations were about the complete when the supernova occurred. I recall the Command saying the deployment of the final convoy, Lambda?, and that is the last convoy to appear in the mission. Of course, I am sure there has been considerable losses in the transports during the evacuation even before you arrived so while the evacuations were practically complete prior to the supernova, not all of Capella's inhabitants made it to Vega.
-
Hmmm... well, BP accounts for one of those losses...
-
The supernova occurs during the third of four scheduled convoys before the Vega node collapse.
Petrarch says the evacuation must be "completed" before the Vega node is collapsed, but just because Command decided to stop evacuating people doesn't necessarily mean there were no more people to evacuate. It's entirely possible that Command just gave up, figuring the risk of keeping the node open would be too great. It's also entirely possible that some people refused to leave, figuring that the Shivans weren't interested in destroying planets this time around. Naturally, they wouldn't have reckoned on the supernova...
-
Nice title, Goober. :drevil:
But honestly, I didn't notice that the Blue Lions only escorted the first three convoys. I thought the four Lambda transports were the last.
On the 250 million evacuees...keep in mind that Command has been evacuating them since Sathanas 01 destroyed the GVCv Tatenen. They've had plenty of time to evacuate that many people.
-
And also keep in mind that Petrarch has a line in the outro cutscene to the effect of, "Capella has been destroyed, but its people are safe, maybe forever." I don't think he'd use the phrase "its people" if the vast majority of them hadn't made it out.
-

You got it wrong, Mongoose.
We sealed off the system and our people are safe, maybe forever. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFCovNKC8k4)

Close enough. Not aiding my point, but close enough. :p
