When I try to start FS2, it wants to run the setup, then tells me "Freespace 2/FRED2 cannot be run from a drive root directory" I'm not sure what this means. I downloaded the files to C:/Games/Freespace 2. Do I have to transfer them to another folder somewhere else?

Do you have the .exe files in the root \freespace2\folder? Have you tried FreeSpace_Open?
Also, wrong board. Someone with a pow4h, plz to move, kthxbye.

The .exe files are in the same folder the installer put them into (c:\games\freespace2. Also, if this isn't the correct board, please direct me to the one I should be looking at. Since I'm relatively new to this, I don't necessarily understand abbreviations...
Thanks,

The Upgrade Project board is mainly meant for stuff like new textures/models and such. This thread should be in the Support board. Don't start a thread there now. Let's hope a mod/admin will move this there.
Now, are you running Launcher.exe? You should be.

Hello,
any questions:
first: is this the package from tureys installer?
second: do you try to start the FS2.EXE? This will be wrong if the answer to Q1 is "Yes"
Yo have to Start @ first Time "Launcher.EXE" and make any setup settings found here in this Board. Then click @ run button.
@ the second time you can start the game with the EXE. for Example: fs2_open_3.6.9.exe
Third: If you mean Freespace 2 Retail then you are wrong here.
Greetings Peter

I've seen this problem caused by a bad icon several times. If you're trying to run FS2 via an icon on your desktop try going into C:/Games/Freespace 2 and running it from there.
If that works then right mouse on the desktop icon and select properties. The Start In : box will probably be empty. It should say C:/Games/Freespace 2

Thanks for the help folks. I've found the program runs better when you've downloaded all the files. I got around to reading the install logs and found that most of the files hadn't finished downloading. I'll take my bug issues over to the Support Forum. Thanks again
