Title: Freespace versus Descent-SSC style
Post by: Inquisitor on March 01, 2002, 07:39:13 am
Check out the screens from the SSC video game, I'm p1mping, but i think it is relevant here :)

Gotta love making games :)

If anyone has REAL suggestions for comparative physics for these ships, please post in that thread.

Oh, physics. You're unlucky that I got to this thread first; my physics is, at best, primary-school level. Yay for Newton! :D

I will say, though, that the engine's looking really cool. Is that fogging I spy? Volumetric, even? :D You should do some ice mountains... shake up the screenshots a little, it wouldn't be so hard. ;)

Yeah, fog :)

I haven't touched the base maps since I did them for my venus project (http://www.deckersds.com/endeavor ) but I have some nice green rolling hills and what not, just not in the game yet :)

The engine is great, if you have 100 bucks, MORE than worth the investment for learning alone.

Friendly Fire is looking great!:) Regarding the physics, it might be nice to have the inertia and momentum effects, but you don't really need anything else. If you specify a mass for each object and drop in some of the standard mechanics formulas, it should work fine.;)

Physics...
Physics..
You mean those two courses I took last year? The ones I cant remember anything from? The ones I somehow managed to pass with a 70?
Nope..
Doesnt ring a bell...

lol, I love physics...:D (along with math and some types of engineering)

Hehe. If you go by real comparative calcs, the Uly's firepower is somewhere around 100x that of the Pyro :p

That's apparently debateable :)

But that IS the kind of info I want :)

What gaming engine does it use?

Torque.

Same engine as Tribes 2.

Interested in looking at this?

Wait a second, is that a Mad Cat from Battletech!??!

No matter what they say about you guys, I have faith :)

Can't sneak anything past ya!

Yes, it is a Mad Cat :)

Torque game engine can be found here: http://www.garagegames.com for 100 USD :)

Everything else, I scrounged for (including the Uly model, Thanks T)!

About how big do you expect it to be when you're done?

it's riding about 28 megs right now.

Pop over to the SSC forums if your interested, I'll hook ya up with a "beta" :)

Noooooo! The poor Mad Cat! How could you!?
Looks fun...especially the part with the Ully blowing up the Descent fighter. :D

Yeah, but you converted it for me :)

I need to redo the texture map on that, it got pixelated :(

Yeah, the Uly killing the Pyro was great fun on PLanet Descent :)

Everyone is welcome to stop by the forums, the more the merrier :)

I've registered over there. I'm just named 'Grey Wolf'. Unfortunately, the link for the Friendly Fire d/load is broken.

Was moving stuff around.

Gonna put a new full build up tonight though.

Quiet, or you'll get us both killed.

So, anyone else like the graphics? :D

The Mad Cat model kinda blows, it's an old World Craft export from a half life map. Took it into Milkshape, rebuilt the missile racks so they didn't take 4000 polys and made the arms longer. The skin is kinda a hack job too, too a custom skin for the mad cat from mektek, but no map for it, so I kinda guessed in milkshape what it should look like :)

The terrain is fun, everything else is a function of how well my buddy knows worldcraft and how good the models look when I get done with them in MS. Someone with REAL modelling skill could probably make this look REAL professional, I just make it work :)
