Title: Spherically-mapped Skybox
Post by: Droid803 on September 14, 2008, 06:54:04 pm
I'm looking for a spherically-mapped skybox model, as I have a spherically mapped skybox texture, and I don't know how to convert it to a square-mapped one. I don't think this will take very long for someone who actually knows how to convert stuff to POF, but I don't...so...it'd be a big help if someone could provide me with a spherically-mapped skybox.

If anyone knows where one such thing exists, that'd work too.

Thanks.

Uhm... *clueless* couldn't you just make a sphere and slap the texture on?

Yes, but I have no idea how to actually convert to POF.

If it's a COB just use Modview or PCS2 to import it.  Though I tried to do the same thing with a shockwave model and it didn't work.

I have 3ds Max 8...and I can't get the Max exporter to work for it.

EDIT: Ok, might as well go out and say it. I want this because I'm making an atmospheric skybox, but I can't find one that I feel fits. The closest would be the one in the 158th screenshot high above the ocean (the ones in TBP are just too low). So...if that exists and is available, it'd save me a whole lot more work as well...

The one in the 158th screenies is a ground model(s) with a skybox.

And can't you just use a 3.6.8 starfield skybox? If you don't have 3.6.8 mediavps, then just take the one from INFA as it's the same.

Trust me, I tried using a INFA skybox. It's not sperically mapped, and the clouds get messed up really badly, and it looks ugly as sin.
About the 158th one, I was talking about the one over the ocean at, like, morning, not the one at night.

There is no skybox sperically mapped as far as i know.
Droid, extract your model to 3ds format, insert it to truespace, glue it with a light and extract it again to cob format. From there on you can convert it with Modview32 or PCS2. :)

Well, after much head-scratching and head-smashing, I finally figured out how to the Max -> POF converter going right and not crashing. After that was out of the way, I spent some time getting my nonexistent modelling skills high enough to make a sphere and slap a texture onto it.

The end of the story is, I got my skybox to work. I even moved on to do a hemispherical one which is what I am using now, and it looks awesome after I spent an hour getting the textures to work properly.

If anyone wants, I'll upload my (crappy-ish) skyboxes.

Peterv, you've probably never seen my screenies then I use it for a few projects, RT, test shots for Joesph's EOTP (forgot spelling), ect...

Anyway it's not spherical, it's a flat ground you merge with a hemisphere. Nico left room with a star background , but it don't look right with atmosphere ABOVE that border so you LOWER it until the horizon meets the ground...

I was gonna upload it for droid this weekend, but since he's all set.. nm...  :D

Well, I'd still appreciate another reference :P

As promised...

But this is the original package, I might have to redo my changes from scratch, so here is Nico/Venom's release.
I'm sure you can figure out how to use it.  :D

Obviously not. Where are they? :)

Christ you don't need them now, the files are above your post...
Not only that it's described where they are: The RT project thread at game warden as well as random threads here and last year in Joseph's EOTP thread (his fighters I converted)..

Observation: you fail!
