Hi, I'd like to know if anyone has the 3.6.6 MediaVPs (
or better the newest release BEFORE 3.6.8)
I am looking for them everywhere, but every time I find a link I get a 404.
-
Umm... don't know about 3.6.6, but 3.6.8's are available at the stickied thread on this board (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39905.0.html). 3.6.7's used to be available at the old SCP website, but have vanished from there since the overhaul.
-
I found the 3.6.6 beta, but here's that 404 again.

if i'd seen this YESTERDAY woulden't have deleted the files
Recycle bin?
Nope just heave ho - i don't have enough space to use my recycle bin anymore.
@Gooby - by the way, nice title
-
ok heres the bad news ...... i dont have them , i did my search for where the files are and there in the fs folder on my back up 2 disc but my back up 2 disc is dead ....... so really sorry for wasting your time , i got them from hades forum but thats dead 2............ lets hope some one out there has them...
-
now i feel bad... :(
-
What do you specifically need from the .vps? Maybe the authors can help with it.
-
I'll head off on a personal huntawumpus quest for you...
-
I'll head off on a personal huntawumpus quest for you...
Just don't offer a downloadable OpenGL 1.1 this time...
-
I'll head off on a personal huntawumpus quest for you...
I have searched the whole web for them , but the only thing I found is a screenshot.
-
does the wayback machine archive downloads?
-
No, you do realize that that would entail archiving every download ever.
-
Indeed. It would be roughly on the same scale as archiving each and every file on each and every HDD in the world; sure, it would be totally cool, but srlsy...
-
yeah - just a thought
-
I found the 3.6.7 in the FS Wiki, but it doesen't have what I want.
-
What exactly are you looking for?
As in, what do you want from the old MVPs?
-
Yeah, probably all the good things from those have already been incorporated into the newer mediavps.
-

This shockwave.

-
While on the topic of shockwaves, I liked the red/orange shockwave that came with whatever mediavps I first got... I don't remember which, but I know that they were red/orange normally but with glowmaps on they were blue... which was strange.
-
You mean this?
EDIT: And yes, these ARE 3.6.6
(http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/3118/screen25093jcqb8.th.jpg) (http://img258.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screen25093jcqb8.jpg)(http://img258.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif) (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php)
-
Ok. You spiked my interest. I want those shockwaves too :P
-
We could all have them, IF we ever find them...
ANYBODY HAVE THEM?
-
YAAAARGH - they're all gone
-
NOOOOOOOO!! :warp:
-
lol, i didnt really even notice that the shockwaves changed colour
-
They are far more realistic than the new ones. I mean, why would an shockwave be blue? Aren't explosions red/orange? :wtf:
-
blue ones are far prettier. and tell me, since when is freespace realistic? at all?
Also, regarding the 3D shockwaves, they replaced the 2D ones cause everyone went pretty much "OOH SHINYYYY!!!"
tis a pity :( oh well.
-
Wait a second, I think I have them on my aunt's computer. I'll use it tomorrow and let you know...I'm taking my pendrive with me so that I can retrieve the files and eventually bring them on FSMods... :)
-
Well the original 2D shockwaves looked like garbage compared to the FS1 shockwave.
What's this about real explosions? The explosions you see in movies (and the non-shockwave ones in FS) aren't normal explosions. They're slow-motion videos of atomized gasoline igniting (read: they got a bunch of gasoline in really tiny droplets suspended in the air and made a spark in the middle of it, while filming with a camera taking more pictures per second than are later used during playback). These are explosions, yes, but they're not 'realistic' for the types of things they are used for in the game--weapon hits and ships going boom (unless your ship has lots of loose fuel pre-mixed with the oxidizer on exposed parts of the hull). Really, they should probably look like small, quick, bright flashes of light.
And shockwaves, realistically, would not be big glowy expanding things and would probably expand a lot faster than they do in the game.
As for the color of the shockwave, if there were a glowy thing (which could maybe be explained away as the ionized/vaporized remnants of the warhead or ship), the color would really depend on what material it was and how hot it was (probably going from white to blue to yellow to red to black as it cooled down).
But blue is cool and supported by canon (and in FS1 it actually looks good too)
-
I use different color/types of shockwaves for different weapons...to symbolize different warheads.
Realism will be chucked out of the window for what looks more epic.
Who wants to see wimpy flashes of light? We want pyrotechnics.
-
A BSG style flash of light would be awesome, but not consistent with the original effects.
FSU doesn't want to replace the old effects, it wants to make them better
-
It is also good to note again that if we wanted realism, we should make beams invisible.
-
It is also good to note again that if we wanted realism, we should make beams invisible.
And make everything silent.
-
can you give a link to fs1 shockwaves? a screengrab perhaps, its been ages since i played it
-
I'm sorry, I didn't have a chance to check my aunt's computer. I'll probably do it tomorrow.
A red/orange 2D shockwave is the most appropriate one, IMO. 2D means that it won't slow down the game and give the impression of a spheric shockwave(which is also realistic) while the color fits well.
-

I just presume that sounds in-game are generated by some kind of on-board system designed for increasing pilot's situational awareness. And beams can be generated on HUD (for survivability purposes)
-
You can also hear explosions from communication channels.
-
I always got the idea that beam weapons were not Laser-type weapons, but relativistic plasma beams, which are visible. Especially as a fighter gets a kick from them, which it wouldn't get from a pure energy beam.
-
But we still have "lasers" traveling at 100mph, which pisses in the shoe of the laws of physics.
Just **** the realism. FS is fun, let's not ruin it.
-

Yep.
As for the color of the shockwave... probably going from white to blue to yellow to red to black as it cooled down.
This looks cool but...

Red/orange's better. However I always prefeared the 3D stuff rather than the 2D.
EDIT: Take a look at this:
(http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/6190/fs2kcl8.th.png) (http://img169.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fs2kcl8.png)
Look how the shockwave passes right next to you. I think that the 3D shockwaves offer a better experience.
EDIT: As for the blasts, I think they should be a bit faster. Also, you could consider the R1, WCS and TBP blasts.
I'm sorry, I didn't have a chance to check my aunt's computer. I'll probably do it tomorrow.
Did you find anything?
-
:bump:
Find anything, Mobius?
-
Hope Mobius has em'
they're nowhere on the interwebz
-
We've ALREADY checked that out.
INSTANT EDIT: Can't wait dammit.
ANOTHER EDIT: MOBIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHERE ARE YOU?
I PMed Mobius. Let's hope he has them.
-
Uhm, I'll check them tomorrow as soon as I get back from the Uni. I visited my aunt today and completely forgot about the old mediavps...
Stay tuned! :)
-
How long will this take...
-
Ok guys, I have them here. :)
What do you want? :)
-
THE SHOCKWAVE! :mad2: please
EDIT: That one:
(http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/7545/fs2openoldkd0.jpg) (http://img337.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fs2openoldkd0.jpg)
-
For instance can you tell me the names? Both of the files and the MVP they're stored in. :)
-
''f_shockwave-''
''shockwave-''
''mv_shockwave-''
In mv_effects and mv_adveffects propably
-
There's a shockwave01.eff and shockwave01_0000.dds through shockwave01_0091.dds. No sign of other files.
I don't have the mv_adveffects MVP now. It doesn't mean I've never had it, I should simply check better the next time.
-
Just post what you found. There may be nothing more in 3.6.6
-
The ones I have are from 3.6.7.
-
The only thing I saw in the shockwaves was black boxes. What the... you only gave me ''shockwave01.eff'' and ''shockwave01_0000'' through ''shockwave01_0002''! Please give me ALL of the 3.6.7 MVPs and I'll find a way :)
-
Oi...but they're 92...and I can't select them all via VP View...that'll take a lot! :warp:
-
DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
please...
-
I have done even more boring stuff with FRED. You have to suffer :D
-
DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
please...
Awright... :)
I have done even more boring stuff with FRED. You have to suffer :D
Don't talk about sufferings and FRED with me, I'm a FRED ManiacTM... ;)
Pre-Post-EDIT: The UL folder is full... :(
-
oh no... :(
-
Oi...but they're 92...and I can't select them all via VP View...that'll take a lot! :warp:
Giving out only 2 of the first frames is equivalent of doing nothing.
-
I can't UL the file here but I have it on my PC. I'm on MSN, if you want it come and ask for it... :)
-
The upload folder is full, but I have them aswell now that Mobius gave them to me.
Ok, uploading to... Where should I upload them? All except for filefront.
-
Sectorgame (http://www.sectorgame.com/f2s/)
-
No. For the same reason it's not uploaded on FSMods: it's just frames. No model, no EFF file. Just frames. I need a temporary hosting place, so I can give it to you, people!
Ah, screw it. 10 downloads from Rapidshare (http://rapidshare.com/files/158811983/Shockwave_files_II.rar.html), as much downloads as you want from Mediafire (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=f03e68fb8f92fb49ab1eab3e9fa335cac452ee9dade40c4b).
-
Mediafire it is.
-
okay, I will assemble it for you guys.
give me 10to15 min.
EDIT: those are not the frames for the shockwave from the screenshots. and they really low quality compared to the ones in the mediavps. you still want them?
-
Awww...dang. I just checked. Not the really nice ones...
Where are the ones in the screenshots? They're BETTER than the ones we have now!
-
They're in the ****ing 3.6.6 MVPs
-

Assemble these anyway... At least we'll have this one till the one in the screnshot is found.
-
I agree
-
They're in the ****ing 3.6.6 MVPs
Uhm, 3.6.6's shockwaves are better than 3.6.7's? I now know why the most recent ones aren't ok...they seem to be designed for FreeSpace Close, not FreeSpace Open...they're a step behind and not ahead...
-
I thought i found the file the other day but it turned out to be corrupt. now the site is gone :doubt: go figure
-
the ones Mobius gave us are just the ones from INFA.
-
?
I extracted them from mv_effects, Media VPs 3.6.7. I don't know if they're also used in INFA(probably the old build because the new one is different).
-
Gotcha!!! (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ing0neximzn)
Now, everything else can be downloaded from:
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,57534.0.html (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,57534.0.html)
-
do you have the uncompressed tga versions? the quality is really low, I think it needs to be re-compressed using a higher quality setting.
-
Which one is low-quality?
-
what you sent.
-
The ''gotcha'' is in DDS, and there are both TGA and DDS versions in your shockwave set here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,57534.0.html).
-
no, they aren't the same shockwave.
-
They're not, but they both can be in DDS, which is, from what I know, better than TGA.
-
DDS, which is, from what I know, better than TGA.
Err, no. At least I remember the other way around. TGA isn't compressed. DDS is. If you want to or have to edit some textures or effects, edit the TGA ones. Then, if it is deemed that they must be compressed to DDS for performance's sake, do so. But only after you've finished with the editing part. When saved in DDS, there is compression which creates artefacts. Many people cannot notice them, especially in the usually hectic situations of FreeSpace. But, if a DDS is edited, then resaved, it is compressed for the second time. This drastically increases the artefacts and is bound to cause noticeable quality loss.
Any hi-fi people are free to correct me if I happen to be talking bullplop here.
-
DDS does indeed have an issue where editing an already compressed map creates more generations of compression.
However, DDS does offer an uncompressed mode. Selecting "8.8.8." or "8.8.8.8." (if there is an alpha channel) will give you a non-compressed image equal in quality to the original TGA or PSD. It is a lot more efficient for the game engine to process DDS images, whether they are compressed or not, especially if it is an image that should have mip-maps, which can be generated for any DDS while saving but must be dynamically generated by the game engine for TGA.
