I want to try and get a bit into making ship models for FS2 and was wondering what the usual programs required are. Here is what I have:
3D Studio max (4.26)
3D Exploration
PCS
Modelview
Cob2Pof (windows)
Segeltuch
I basically just would like to know how to convert a 3DS file to a POF and have it work correctly.:) (I tried putting some stuff into the game but it keeps crashing) Thanks in advance.:)

basically you need truespace, v4.2 being the best
one of our modellers uses 3ds but its a ball ache converting to truespace cob (necessary for conversion to pof).
not that you cant simply make a conversion with 3d ex it will just be buggy, and we dont want buggy do we?
hierarchy of the model is important too.
basically you need 3ds (optional), ts, and pcs (get the latest off kazans site here :
http://alliance.sourceforge.net/files/Software/AllProFS2Kit.exe
read about hierarchy of models here :
http://www.hard-light.net/vwbb/showthread.php?threadid=2755
this should get you started.

hey...cool...I remember when I started that thread...

You also need a modeler, and with 3D Exploration, you don't need Truspace!
My modeler of choice is Milkshape 3D.;)

Ya, but where can I get Segeltuch?

you don't need segeltuch. PCS does all of that.

Thanks for the replies guys; wait, so is Truespace required for this or will any modeling program (along with a program for COB conversion) work? I really dislike TS's interface and I don't have it at the moment, but if it is necessary I will just have to use that.
What I was doing so far was to build a generic model in 3DS Max, convert it to a COB using 3D Exploration and then drop it into Cob2Pof. Modelview opens up the POF fine but the game does not like it. PCS will not convert the stuff and gives some errors about the object name; I tried changing the name to "detail0" in 3DEx, but that didn't seem to help. I haven't tried out DTP's hex method yet though; that might work.:)
