Title: My HUD is officially FUBAR
Post by: Warp Shadow on September 17, 2008, 07:49:10 pm
Well this is a pretty simple problem that just doesn't seem to want to resolve itself.

My HUD is broken as hell.

ALl of the default files work perfectly, however I changed the reticule, lead indicators and lock on cycle not problem. Then when I went to change the left arc, it worked but I couldn't move the guage. THen I went for the right arc and no matter what I do the lock indicators stay in the exact same spot. Then I went to change the energy bars and then they grow about 120% so the bottom 4th is cut off and move to the right for some god forsaken reason. Also, only changing the original ones works because changing the media_vps does nothing.

I even tried importing the whole HUD from Beyond the Red Line and the same exact thing happened. Left arc, reticule, lock, etc. worked, energy, right arc, top arc, etc. is broken as f*ck.

What the god damned jesus mary and joseph hell is going on here?! I've been trying this for literally DAYS.

Got a picture?  I've never seen myself as a HUD before.   :nervous:

FUBAR stands for "****ed up beyond all repair/recognition".

Ans this may well be the least helpful forum I've ever subscribed too. Everyone flocks to your topic when you're talking about some inane silliness, but ask for a serious, helpful reply and you get 200 views and 0 replies. I've been here for over a year and have only once ever gotten a helpful topic.

That's a joke. I'm pretty sure he knows what FUBAR stands for.

Got a picture?

That's not a joke. Giving us a screenshot will better help us come up with an accurate diagnosis and a fix. Also it would be useful to know what build you're using, what other mods are active, etc. It doesn't sound like a hardware issue so system specs aren't probably necessary... Also, which way of modifying the HUD (scripting, tbl, alternate data files, etc.) are you using?

Alright, what site would you guys recommend for image hosting? One that doesn't spam your inbox.

That's because everyone can contribute to inane silliness, but few people actually know how to bugfix.

Sadly true.

You can also just attach jpegs or gifs to your post, you don't need any sort of image hosting for what will be needed to be seen only temporarily. Just click on additional options and attach and then select whatever file it is.

If you've got a Live Account, try SkyDrive. :D

About the HUD thing...have you checked that the lights are on? Most HUD portions have an on/off switch. If it's set to off, you can't change the colour for that portion.

One more thing. A problem like this should be put in FreeSpace & FreeSpace Open Support (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,151.0.html), not here.

Well, from what he says, he's trying to mod his cockpit, so its in the correct place.

The reticule is mine but the rest of the HUD is straight from BtRL. Notice the energy gauge, the lockon signatures and how the speed bar refuses to fill up past this point.

Looks like it's just a bit of a hybrid HUD problem - ie, elements lumped together that weren't supposed to fit. Clean out the hud folder and go for a full BTRL hud, full FS hud or make your own I reckon. ;)

Edit: hmm, misread. All but the reticle is BTRL? In that case I dunno, but I'd still suspect it's a hybrid problem.

And a note on the gauge: are you supposed to have shields or?

Aw c'mon guys. I even posted an image. It's been days.

For one thing, "EVEN posted an image" is not really worth praise.  It is to be expected for a problem of a graphical nature, and I must say, for being so critical of these forums, your early posts were not very intelligent, as you did not include an image until prompted multiple times.  As for your problem, it has only been six days, and that is generally not enough time for everyone who may have had this problem to see your thread.  If the issue is of utmost importance, bumping is a good option (you did a fine job of that).  Furthermore, I would say that maybe you have somehow corrupted your FS2 data folder or VPs (specifically the hud folder (data/hud) or the hud.tbl (data/tables)).  A solution might be to move your data folder out of your FS2 folder.  If you still have an issue, try reinstalling the VPs.  Finally, if you insult the community, you are likely to be ignored after the community reads the insult.

Errm, slight overreaction there I think Jake. I certainly didn't read his message as remotely insulting in any way. ;)

I would take it more lightly if he wasn't so obviously impatient

It helps to include some other information about your environment as well.  At a minimum, it would be useful to know what build you're using, 3.6.9 or a testing build, and which one if so.  It would also be nice if you could test on your end with multiple builds.  If it's happening 3.6.9, try a new build, or vice versa.  If it's in a new build and not 3.6.9, perhaps try some other testing builds to narrow down where the change may have occured, coders are much more likely to help with this kind of problem if you do more to point them in the right direction.  I would even look in the commit logs if I had a clue where to look, then I could perhaps at least point at some possibilities where the issue came from.  If it's behaved this way since 3.6.9 and still is, then it's either a really old bug or it's something broken on your end, which could still take a while since not many people around here do HUD editing.
