Title: I blame Shrike
Post by: mikhael on March 01, 2002, 10:37:11 pm
He has made me hear the call of the Machine Mother again. I must do her will. I must silence dischord with extreme prejudice. I've disconnected my stick and put my mouse back on my computer. I must take up my trusty wrench and logitech quick-cam and help the Mother slay her wayward children.

On a slightly more on topic note, has anyone seen http://www.sshock2.com ? When did they make an editor?

I won't lie. The fact that the whole first section of the game had no monsters creeped the hell out of me. Then later, I duck through a door, straight into a pipe hybrid and manage to kill him and turn around to the hanged man, I screamed like a little girl. The atmosphere is that good. And the music just really drags you in. :D

never played it, but it seems Looking Glass tech are very good for making scary games. Darkproject remains one of my all time favourite games, it really made me jump out of my chair many times, because of nasty little tricks. My favourit one has to be in the catacombs, you're used to find hammerite corpses everywhere on the ground, and zombies next to them, jumping on you when you're close. I see those two corpses lying on the floor of this room, one hammerite and one zombie. I prepare my sword to knock him down, giving me enough time to run away, and i point conscienciously my vbiewport right on the head of the zombie, and I slowly comes closer. And then it happened! the damn zombie was damn dead, but the hammerote was the damn thing that would attack me!!! Rah!!!  I screamed like a little girl lol, I really wasn't expecting that hammerite to be a damn zombie :p. This never happened again, but I've always been suspiscious after any corpse I've seen later in the game :p
Damn, I need to get Thief2...

Thief 2 is also a great game. All Looking Glass titles I have played so far have always had the atmosphere. (only one I can think of that matches SS2 here is Deus Ex) Never really played a "scary" game though.:p

It's been quite a while that ShockEd has been out... My brother actually worked on his own expansion project - BioShock. Damn nice story, and the first "mission" (on board a shuttle that just crashed into a station) was quite fun, if a bit short. Shame that the editor is so hard to use, there's quite a number of people working on mods for Shock2...

I'll contact my brother and see if I can get any screens from the levels he made. They're not complete, but are looking quite good. They had this cooperative mission development project that was damn fun - each guy got the mission for one day, and could do anything to it, then he passed it to the next guy on the list. We should try that kind of thing someday...

GREAT HOPPING HYBRIDS!

I was just wandering through med sector on my way to where I just happened to know there was a turret. As I was just about to turn the corner

*BAM* "YOUR SONG IS NOT OURS..." *BAM* *moan* *BAM*

I whipped out my pistol and started firing like mad into the shadows and took the shotgun hybrid down, only to run out of bullets facing his friend. *BAM* By this time I'd recoverd my senses enough to switch to my PSI amp and took him down with Cryokinesis.

In the aftermath, I saw that I had been loaded with AP rounds. I only had two left and a turret in my near future. This wasn't looking good...

 This game gets me every time. :D

They set off alarms that cause the game to spawn entirely too many enemies. This is a bad bad thing. *heh* Yes, you can shoot them out.

Nope, shooting cameras doesn't set off any alarms, thank God. I'd rather be sure and hack the closest security terminal, though. ;)

My poor little OSA guy doesn't have but a pitiful Hack of 1. Luckily, with  that one groovy PSI ability that pumps your CYB stat by 2, I can hack some things. Even better, my CryoKinesis is signifigantly better than my pistol. When I was going thru the game as a hacker, I had trouble with cameras because they always took like three bullets. This was especially bad for those cameras mounted really high on walls and such.  With my CryoK, though, I take them out in one shot (and PSI hypos with PharmoFriendly make it the most plentiful ammo in the game).

I'm getting ready to release the hatch into the Engineering deck now. Mazes of conduits and wandering hybrids and annelids come to mind. Joy.

I need to get together with some guys and play this game multiplayer. :D

Heh, I've tried it once - didn't get too far, though, no time. But it's amazing - specially if you have at least three people, each specilized in one area. :)

lol, that's the only problem in Deus Ex; when you shoot an alarm, the gun makes a loud noise and everyone comes running up to you anyway.:p

Actually, they prefer to be called Shocklings, but I don't really know why, and it's not much of a difference anyway.

And unfortunately I'm just playing the game lately (or trying to... damn midwifes). Figured it'd be a lot better to know the whole story before thinking about an expansion. :p

Deck 3... Hydroponics. CREEPY.

Babies need to sleep... Yeah. Babies need to sleep. I need need fifteen minutes to change my shorts after the scripted event spawned a cyborg babysitter behind me. Luckily I've been toting a shotgun with rifled slugs around. I've been search the Eggs this time around too. Lots and lots and lots of Annelid healing organs. Groovy.

And in our next episode, our intrepid OSA hero goes through the hatch to Hydroponics A and gets to face off with angry mecha. :D

Is the multiplayer Deathmatch or cooperative? Only bad thing about the game in my view is the lack of people.

And the lack of people is actually a good thing IMO - well, at least the lack of living people. :D

Yep, you need the last patch for the game for multiplayer to work...
Title: I blame Shrike
Post by: mikhael on April 02, 2002, 02:04:41 pm
I played the multiplayer game for a while with some friends. There were three of us and we each took a specialized path. I took Navy hacker, and my pals took Marine gunman and OSA spook. It was excellent. :D

My only complaint would be that the game is more than a bit easy in cooperative play since the game balance was designed for one damage-dealing hero.

It strikes me that porting Shock2 to a more up to date engine. DeusEx has most of the features necessary already.

Steak, it's much better to experience it first-hand.
There's nothing like seeing five hybrids running toward you shouting "Silence the discord!" or walking through cargo bay 2 with the kamikaze protocol droids saying "I'm sure that this is just a big misunderstanding(why did Trioptimum pack al that C-4 into their protocol droids, anyway?).  And when you actually see someone else alive onboard the ship, you jump for joy.  It isn't as interesting to read about someone else doing it.

Steak, I leave out the scary bits. I leave out the stuff that makes the heart thump and causes the strangled cries of shock and horror to claw their way out of your throat INCH BY INCH.

Oh, by the way, you wanna know fear? Try jacking the difficulty some. I keep it 'Normal'. Oh and don't ever touch the optional configuration settings like the weapon degradation rate or the respawn rate. You don't know fear until you've experienced this:
[list=1]

At that moment--surrounded by the angry altered remains of your shipmates, holding a broken assault rifle, boxed in--you know fear. You can read about it. You can imagine it. But you can't KNOW until its your virtual avatar in that position. Trust me. Its a 'we need 15min to change our shorts' situation.
