Title: If a Freespace Open version of FS2 demo were released...
Post by: Mars on September 24, 2008, 02:35:59 am
This demo would be posterity, and working off of the assumption that the full retail data would no longer be provided in the near future, as cheap FS2 CDs are now being manufactured.

Also, if anything else seems important mention it in your post.

If you're referring to GOG, it's not CDs, they're selling a digital download.  However, I think it would be neat if the demo data were fixed to work with FSO anyway.  Currently, it appears you cannot just install the demo and then drop in some FSO executables.  Seems the tables aren't quite the same or something.

Uhm I'm confused the demo was already converted for FS Open, wasn't it?  I know I've downloaded it before....

Flashiness is very important, but for a demo, a download time of >30 mins would scare me off.

Bah, girly talk. Back when I had a modem, I downloaded the Mafia demo for at least 13 hours.

If we separate the fixed retail demo data from the demo eyecandy, then you can get them both at your leisure.

It is, however, since the retail data is going to be removed from (the HLP chunk) of the internet, now is an excellent opportunity to expand out, since we'll suddenly be fully legal.

I don't think plonking a giant installer that installs >5GB is a very effective way of doing that.

Yeah we've been talking about the availability of FS2 on GOG.com.  Since that seems to be an official distributor of Interplay games now, we really shouldn't keep distributing it for free once they come fully online.  So, we're considering distributing a set of data close to what came with the original FS2 demo, tweaked to work with the SCP since without changes, they don't.  Then we could have a set of trimmed down MediaVPs perhaps, which only include demo material.  Either way, the original demo VPs would be needed at least, and they need some tweaking, which apparently Goober has pretty much done already.
