Title: Web Cursor missing bug.
Post by: NeverNe on October 01, 2008, 10:15:32 pm
I read the article on wiki but it didn't help. I'm getting this:

Error:
Web cursor bitmap not found.  This is most likely due to one of three reasons:
   1) You're running FreeSpace Open from somewhere other than your FreeSpace 2 folder;
   2) You've somehow corrupted your FreeSpace 2 installation;
   3) You haven't installed FreeSpace 2 at all.
Number 1 can be fixed by simply moving the FreeSpace Open executable file to the FreeSpace 2 folder.  Numbers 2 and 3 can be fixed by installing or reinstalling FreeSpace 2.  If neither of these solutions fixes your problem, you've found a bug and should report it.
File:J:\src\cvs\fs2_open_3_6_9.final\code\Graphics\2d.cpp

I'm running windows vista 64-bit. I ran it as an administrator too.

K, this is good to hear.  Did you read the error itself?

Yes, it is in the right directory, and I installed it again with a new file to no avail.

Has the game worked before, or is this a problem with a brand new installation?

No it has never worked before.

In that case, I would take a guess that it's related to you using 64-bit vista. Be that as it may, try and run the debug build (fs2_open_*****_d.exe as opposed to the builds without the _d in the filename), and check if it generates a debug log [..\FreeSpace2\data\fs2_open.log]. If the log exists, post it as an attachment. Wise ones will then determine what's going on.

No debug log, also if it helps I'm trying to run it on direct3d since I get "Pixel formation could not be found for W32" or something like that when I run openGL (I won't check since the windows don't close. No matter what it always does that with 3.6.10 even when I have it set to D3D.

D3D is ancient, obsolete and went unsupported since a long, long time ago as far as FS2_Open is concerned. Have you looked into the Pixel format issue in-depth? What GPU and what drivers are you using? Have you selected 32-bit video for the game on the Launcher's Video tab and are you using 32-bit colours for the Windows desktop itself?

I know, its just that openGL won't work. No I have not, but I need to update openGL from 1.1 to 1.2 or better and I have the latest ATI drivers.
I don't know if you can update openGL (I'm not a techie). My video card is terrible, but I crashed my good one. I should be enough to run FS2. But that doesn't fix the cursor issue, which keeps it from running all together.

How can you crash your GPU? Did you physically smash it broken, or did it just give up it's contract, melt, kick the bucket or die in some other manner? What steps have you taken to confirm that the card is, in fact, dysfunctional? And what card is it actually that is now in your use? Some ATi/AMD card but what, in fact, it is?

If your graphics card (or it's drivers) doesn't support OpenGL 1.2, I think you're screwed. It might well have the processing power to run FS2_Open, but if it doesn't support the API that the game uses, it's like saying XBox360 should run IL-2 Sturmovik 1946... I recommend double-checking that your good card is actually broken, the next step then is to go into shop and buy a new graphics card.

I would say your problem here is not the Web Cursor, it's lacking OpenGL support. No one should expect D3D to work correctly, especially on more exotic situations like 64-bit vista...

How did you install FSO? If you installed it recently with Turey's Installer, you are missing FS2 itself. Download it at www.gog.com.

Just because it was better than this card doesn't mean it was not crap, I melted it, I checked. Yeah I'm screwed (and going shopping). Also, I got the abandonware version of FSO. Is GOG free?

HotU?

Is GOG free?
Was it $6.99 or something. Not free, but cheap. And fully legal. And if you like the game, why not buy it?

Incidentally, the "Unable to find proper pixel format for OpenGL W32" has been addressed in the stickied troubleshooting thread on this board. You should check if you have installed chipset drivers for the chipset on your motherboard. If not, it will cause this error no matter how new graphics drivers you use.

abandonware version of FSO

Who abandoned it? :nervous:

That's a bit vague description to be honest... Maybe take a screenshot of the FS2 directory (or make a directory listing and post that in code tags) to show what you have there?

Of course, since GoG is distributing the game at reasonable price, you should really buy it anyway...

I would guess the guy hasn't installed FS2, and thinks that FSO and/or the mediavps contain everything needed to run the game.

:yes:

Would be my bet. As usual running the debug build and then posting the FS2_open.log from inside the data folder would probably tell us exactly what the problem was.

Hey there, I get the same problem. I understand what the solution is (and I will probably go and buy the retail version from GOG) but the Wiki doesn't make this entirely clear.

For example, on page http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Installing_Freespace_2 it says:

Quote
This guide assumes you already have a working copy of Freespace 2 installed. If not, see Installing Freespace 2

The link takes you to the same page, so I figure that the installer will do this for me.

Then it says:

Quote
The most recent Installer includes:

    * Retail Freespace 2

I ran the installer with "the lot" option, and it downloaded around 3GB worth of stuff. So I assumed that the retail FS2 was in there somewhere.

So from this forum thread I gather that the installer does not take care of installing the retail version of Freespace 2, and I should purchase and download it from GOG http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/freespace_2 (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/freespace_2)?

Also, see debug log attached.

No, the Installer no longer downloads the retail version of FS2.  That page really needs to be updated on a number of fronts, including that repeat link.  I can at least remove the reference to the retail game in that list.

Updating it right now.  I'm rewriting installing FS2 so it's no longer a redirect as well.

Glad to be useful.

I've already bought and paid the hideous fee of USD$5.99 for FS2 and I will download it when my off-peak time comes around.

Hideous? Hideous?! Just skip one beer and you can easily afford to buy FS2 from GOG. eBay, on the other hand... you might be able to spend up to $70 for FS2 there.
