Title: More errors...this time with FS2 Open itself
Post by: dANGER boy on October 02, 2008, 10:11:55 pm
So I just tried to do a clean install and now it is broken.  Every time I try to open FS2 Open and Fred2 Open I get the following error message.  I tried 2 clean installs and get the same thing.

Did you install FS2 before running the FS2_Open installer?  The retail files are required.

I thought that because it is FS2 Open you didn't have to buy the retail.  I have it but I didn't think it was required.

Oh, but it is. FSO is an enhancement for FS2. Not a complete, independent overhaul.

Total conversions, on the other hand, don't require retail FS2. The Babylon Project, Wing Commander Saga and the likes can and must be installed separately from FS2 and they'll run without FS2.

Nah, I've got the discs, I just didn't realize I had to install Freespace 2 first.  I made ISO's and stashed them away for safe keeping.  Those discs are precious.  I should get them framed and mounted.  :D

I love how people see a conspiracy where there isn't one.

The Installer is still a one-man project. I have total and absolute control over what the Installer downloads, and the final decision on the Installer's contents is and will always be mine to make. I decided to remove the retail files. I could have decided to keep them, and while there may have been disapproval, the only thing that could have stopped me would be a C&D from Interplay.

In short, I weighted the options and made an informed decision to change the contents of the Installer. The was no mystic group of "elders" forcing me to do so. Any "blame" or "responsibility" for this decision should be directed solely at me and not at anyone you see as an "elder".

You're right, but had that idiot not posted on Interplay's forums, once GOG left beta you'd have had a very unhappy group of elders on your hands if you left the retail data in the installer :)

i am not seeing conspiricy. all i am seeing is a need to remove the retail files to avoid said C&D. i respect your decision to remove the files and would probably do the same. all i am saying is that the idea was first brought up by the people with power on the forum (you included).

The rant wasn't directed specifically at you, it was directed at everyone who has been complaining about the removal.

OK fair enough
i really have nothing to complain about - i already have the retail files. i just like to complain.

EDIT: *tinfoil hopes "i just like to complain" won't become his new title when his old one expires in --HOLY ****-- 11 Days - i need a watch
