Title: Recommendation for a planet pack
Post by: Krelus on October 03, 2008, 09:19:26 am
I was bouncing around FS2 Mod repositories looking for a really nice .TGA HQ background planet pack and couldn't find one I really liked. I'm looking for high-resolution and a nice variety. Can you guys point me in the right direction?

There ain't any that I know of, if you mean something that you could readily install and use without writing table entries and stuff. Planets have been rather neglected... the MediaVP versions were made rather long time ago if I'm not much mistaken.

MediaVP's do have high-res versions of retail planets, at variable quality and some of them are just re-coloured planets and moons from solar system. Probably the closest you can get to what you want at the moment is going through this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,41939.0.html) and checking if there are any nice stuff you could use, but you'll need to write the table entries for them (unless you plan on just replacing the retail planet with new images...). And of course, you can go through the net in general, check if there are any planet artists that would allow you to use their planets, if you're planning on using them in a public mod or stuff like that.

Also, for FS2_Open use, the TGA format does work but is more resource-intensive than DDS format, which offers (when correctly handled) a reduced memory footprint with very small amount of quality loss.

I am, however, in a process of creating a planet background package starting from creating replacements for the planets that are basically clear rip-offs of Mars, Europa, Ganymede, Jupiter or other familiar objects from solar system.

Hope i'm not spoiling anything, but TotT compiled a big file (partly me, mostly Orpheas, or however you spell his name...) of backrounds from a number of mods. ask hellstryker or bengal to upload it somewere if they have time.

Uranus please.

I hereby forbid anyone from posting uranus on this thread. :ick:

Also, teal gas will hopefully not be needed in MVP 3.6.10 since teal afterburners will hopefully be a thing of the past.

I'd really rather not release that yet, if it's all the same to you :\

Those "create your own planet" tutorials looked interesting. I've got some experience with advanced 2D graphics programs (namely Corel and Photoshop) so I'll give that a shot.
