what if someone made a cargo container, for like a civilian corp. And on the cargo container it had like some animated advertisment? Even something as simple as a flashing "Cocacola Sign" to maybe something more elaborate. Would this be doable? Or would animated textures crash the smack out of most people's comps. Or is it incompatible with the current textures? Or maybe the animated thing would count teach frame in the animate gif/whatever as a new texture (thus heading towards the limit very quickly??)

You could do it with animated glowmaps. It's not that resource intensive AFAIK.
-
I think it's possible as long as you keep the animated variant in the adv_effects MVP, thus preventing major slowdowns in old computers.
-
If its only going to flash on and off, I doubt it'll cause any slowdown at all...unless there are like...hundreds of them.
-
hundreds of different ones, if they all use the same texture using the texture at all will cause most of the performance impact.

If you remember Omni's ds9 war test, all the fed ships had animated bussards...
I use it also for some ships...
The only tiem I crashed anything was when I made a 20mb ani.
The video to "rubber duckie" for Roboquack. I guess it was a bit much...
:(

Isn't this being done already on the Shivan ships? I do like the idea... Space billboards

There were space billboards way back in fury 3... it's a joke to say it can't be done
