It might have been better to pick another music track.

That one's been used EVERYWHERE.

Tough. :p  I've wanted to use it in a FreeSpace video ever since I saw it in the Two Towers trailer, and it kept getting pushed back until now.  Besides, it's still good music.

This is true.

However, there are other tracks that haven't been used everywhere too. Maybe for trailer the second? :P

Yeah, I agree that this music track is heavily overused. But, it still kicks ass (hence why people use it).
I was going to complain, but given the ST:R teaser was a virtual parody of the Star Trek trailer, I think it fits in with the established tongue-in-cheek sorta promotional style for the MOD. So it fits. (and the music does kick ass) I just wish the resolution was a little better quite honestly.

Sweet - you used one of the two best Tailer music pieces ever

1) Requiem for a Dream
2) Don't know the Name, but used in this trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJazgTo2H0Q for B5 "a call to arms"...0:55-1:28
If anyone knows the name of that music please tell me...

Cant wait til this is released

Blunt trailer thoughts: overall, I think it wouldn't be of much interest to people who don't already know what ST:R is.

As people have mentioned, did you really have to use that music? It's a good piece, but it is used by every fan-made video for anything. It makes ST:R appear as just another generic and uninteresting one-man mod.

Having some of the game sound audible rather than just a music track would have been good. The lasers and explosions don't 'feel' powerful when silent. Also, it would have been cool if the trailer showed off various player weapon types rather than just the Prometheus; perhaps even a third-person shot, for eye-candy's sake.

/me nervously awaits the 'well, could you do any better?' response.

If people don't like the music, they don't have to listen. :)

As I said, I have been wanting to use that music ever since I saw the Two Towers trailer.  This is the first video where I've had a chance to use it.

Do want, indeed. :)

And just to satisfy my curiosity, was that little musical sting right before the credits taken from the intro movie of Myst?  If not, it's just about a dead ringer for it.

Hi, it's my first post here.
The name of this music is "Lux Aeterna" and it was wrote by Clint Mansell.
See wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lux_Aeterna_(Requiem_for_a_Dream)) if you want more details.
Trailer is great!

This will be harsh. Don't worry. You deserve it.

Spoiler:
Jesus ****ing Chirst.

What is WRONG WITH YOU?

DO YOU NOT REALIZE HOW MUCH YOU CHEAPEN THE WHOLE THING BY USING THE IMBECILIC ****ING TWO TOWERS REQUIEM OF THE ASSWIPE TOWERS
STUPID, MIND NUMBING, OVERUSED, VAPID, LIVID MORONIC TUNE.

Why don't you just go ahead and call it "Silent Threat; Darkness Rising" to complete the experience of "The most overused emo words and/or media in the history of the known universe".

Jesus, don't you know everyone used that ****ty song for their youtube video for everything from kittens playing in the back yard to the vidcap of playing Knights of the Old Republic with some mods. Why would you want to associate it with ANYTHING you do, let alone Freespace.

I mean seriously.

What the hell. WHY?

The moment I heard it, I threw the video in the trash. Trash belongs in the trash.

God damn it.

Well, you wanted input. That's my input.

Too bad I didn't see anything of the trailer. The teaser was great, so I'm kinda sad not to have been able to see the trailer, since you do those well. But I think it's understandable I had to scrub it off from my hard drive as fast as possible, lest I catch the AIDS and CANCER that music spreads.

Erm i already knew that the Music used for the ST:R trailer was Lux Aeterna, more commonly known as Requiem for a dream.

This was the trailer music that I was asking about:

2) Don't know the Name, but used in this trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJazgTo2H0Q for B5 "a call to arms"...0:55-1:28
If anyone knows the name of that music please tell me...

An Black Dove...CHILL OUT!

Yeah Lux Aeterna is overused in fan trailers and video. But that is because it is such a great dramatic piece. It goes just about anything...

BUT you dont like it then;

A) mute the sound as da Goob said
B) Dont watch it.
C) Make your own tailer
D) just say "I hate the Music" Dont voice your entire opinion. Your opinions are your own and i respect that. You are entitled to them, but next time you keep those sorts of opinions to yourself.

Yes, let's just forget about criticism. Nevermind, Goober! This trailer is perfect. Don't change a thing.

BlackDove might have gone a bit overboard, but that kind of 'if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all' mindset really pisses me off. The thread's for discussion about the trailer, right? But - whoops! - only the circle jerk kind. Wonderful.

Ah, I see.  Well, I do appreciate it, but as long as that's not the only thing people talk about, I don't mind having them in this thread. ;)  If it does get to be a problem, we can split the music posts off into their own thread, where people can gush or rant to their heart's content.

So, let's get back on topic, people!  What did you notice about the trailer that intrigued you? :)

This trailer was a severe disapointment after the first teaser.

1. The Music. Blackdove pretty much summed up everything I would say, so just re-read his post. (I did have to watch it on mute)

2. The game play footage was so damn generic it could have come from any mod or even main campaign, I couldn't make out anything specific to ST, just (seemingly) random dogfighting.

3. The Resolution/Old Graphics. Between the archaic graphics and the small resolution I had trouble making out much of anything happening in the clips. Perhaps using the original graphics was to imply that ST:R would be compatible with retail Freespace, but it just took away from the overall for me.  (Even 6.7.8 build would have been nice) Some shots from outside the HUD would have been nice, as it was all I could focus on was the poor aim of the pilot. I know you guys can and have done better.

I was really hoping for better, especially after the Teaser which did everything right, teasing us with hints of what was to come and only revealing a partial (in construction) shot of the Hades, establishing a sense of anticipation.

After watching this I threw it in the recycle bin and just watched the first teaser again.

K.  Well, as I said, I've been wanting to use the music ever since I heard it in the Two Towers.  Would you have had the same reaction if this trailer had come out in 2002?

Quite honestly, you must not have been paying very close attention then. :p  The trailer is chock full of Silent Threat-specific scenes.  Several (admittedly minor) spoilers are included, and if you read the dialogue on the HUD you might even be able to figure out some information about the plot.

Incidentally, I worked closely with a professional video production artist while putting this together.  None of those scenes are "generic".  They're all in there for a reason.  The order, the synchronization with the music, and the juxtaposition are all important.

This choice was made for purely technical reasons.  At the time I recorded the videos, GameCam had a bug that prevented it from working under OpenGL.  (I think that bug has since been fixed.)  Also, any version of the SCP more recent than 3.5.5 crashed when running Direct3D under GameCam.  So, I used 3.5.5.  FRAPS wasn't an option because I have never been able to get FRAPS to record smoothly on my computer.

And did you watch the downloadable video or the YouTube version?  The downloadable video has a much higher resolution.  Which is sort of required if you want to find the biggest Easter egg of all.

I first watched it on Youtube, after downloading it and watching it again I can see that my "generic scenes" shot was unfounded.

Fair enough, I still would have liked to see more modern graphics, but if it can't be helped, it can't be helped.

In 2002? probably not, because I hadn't had to watch EVERY ****ING FANBOY OF ANYTHING EVER use it for their personal video. But even then I wouldn't have been happy with it.

I was pissed off at Peter Jackson for using it in the Two Towers Trailer. The songs were composed for Requiem for a Dream (made in 2000) and were best used there. (if you haven't seen Requiem, I highly recommend it.)

The music was my biggest problem with the trailer. Putting it on mute and playing other music on my computer made for a much better trailer.

Well, to be fair, I did most of the work -- I recorded the in-game footage, wrote the text for all the captions, and drew up the timeline of scenes.  He compiled the scenes in his production studio and did the special effects.  But he and I had several discussions about what scenes to use, what sort of dramatic effect I wanted to achieve, what the timing and placement should be, etc.

It helped that we were friends in high school. :)  Here (http://www.stvp.net/) is his website.  He's done stuff for news channels, the Miss America pageant, commercials, weddings, etc.  He's very prolific.

The text was the best part of the trailer imo. Not necessarily the effect along with it, just what was said.  I especially liked the "this war's not even over yet . . . . and they're already getting ready for the next" haha

That particular snippet of text I got from an episode of Deep Space 9, Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges.  It fit so well with the ST:R plot I figured I'd use it. :)

While I can't do anything about the trailer itself, if you want different music....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBu74nNgqXk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBu74nNgqXk)

Yes, but I took the opposite view: All those slapdash noob videos using the RfaD music felt cheap, so I thought the music deserved to be used in a well-done trailer to counterbalance all of the others out. :)

Actually, the only issue I have is with the font.

Since Goober wanted to use the music in his trailer, let him do it. I mean, I used Descent: FreeSpace trailer music in this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BopLK1N3EpM), so why can't he use that?

 Looking at the video itself, doesn't it make you amazed how far gaming has progressed?

Anyway . . . .

Personally, I really don't mind how many times that tune is used for fan-made mod trailers and whatever. Compared to some fan-made trailers, the use of this music was horrific, as well as being the main tune for every 5th video in Youtube.
But the use of it in this trailer was great, and "sync-ed" so I really can't see the basis in the complaints above.

This is gonna sound kinda nuts, but does anyone else think that the trailer might work well set to Hell March, composed by Frank Klepacki for C&C: Red Alert?
