Title: Issue with planeta1
Post by: FreeSpaceFreak on October 09, 2008, 01:17:36 pm
There seems to be nothing wrong with the .dds when I open it up, but in-game I get this:

Hmm, nasty.

Are you sure it's not being overridden by another file lurking in your FS2 folder?

And are you playing in 32-bit color OpenGL and not 24-bit?

Just noticed that this issue appears for me too...

Thanks a load, turns out I was playing in 16-bit. I didn't know it would make that much difference.

While I'm at it, what is the "Anisotropic filter" and what value is recommended?

Both the anisotropic filter and antialiasing do the same thing: make object edges smoother. I can never remember which one, but one of them doesn't actually do anything at the moment on FSO. Basically you can crank the values as high as your rig allows.

Regardless you're better off controlling those settings in your driver's control panel if you actually want to use them.

Uhh, no.

The anti-aliasing setting in the Launcher doesn't do anything except look pretty at the moment.  If you want to set AA then do it in your driver control panel.  Setting AA will smooth out jaggies on the edges of polys to make things look better.  The higher AA setting that you use the slower it is, but also the more memory required to run the game, so keep that in mind.

The anisotropic filter setting affects mipmap levels.  It's basically like a sharpen filter and when mipmap filtering is used by the game it helps keep the textures from becoming as blurry.  The higher the setting the faster your graphics card need to be, but there are also quality issues, so you might not really like the visual changes when set as high as you can actually set it.  It is best to set AF in the Launcher rather then doing it in your driver control panel.

Oops. Sorry, my bad. I've always had a hard time keeping the two apart, and over time I've just decided that they must be roughly the same thing.
