[other than buy it]
I had to delete my copy of retail FS2 for irrevelent reasons, and now i want to play fs2 again. i do NOT want to pay for a DL or retail fs2, and am not asking for pirate sites either, i want to if i can DL the installer, DL everything available, and play alternate campains, etc.
all those getting started/FAQ's/etc. i have found give me nothing.

The options are:
1. Own a copy of FS2 already.
2. Find a copy of FS2 from a business establishment (not likely).
3. Purchase a copy of FS2 from a shady eBay personality.
4. Purchase FS2 from Good Old Games.
5. Warez0r FS2.
Turey has made the decision to not include the retail files, since GOG is selling FS2 (and FS1 for that matter) at a most reasonable price. Legally.
-
more corectly; can i play fs2 mods without R fs2?
-
No.
-
You can, however, play Beyond the Red Line, The Babylon Project, the upcoming Diaspora, and other standalones.
-
GOG still allows beta signup and FS2 costs a whopping $6. You can download it immediately after. It's worth it.
-
Just take into consideration that despite the binary being 1.20 they provide old (pre 1.20) root_fs2.vp. There were some mission fixes in 1.20 which are ont included here. ALready reported to them, we'll see how fast they react :-)

Only if it's the version with the allowed to share EULA.
Serious has anyone tried to apply the 1.2 patch to it? If so and it works I don't see why the patch couldn't be put up for download.

It fails, it detects that files are not what it expect. Can't get updated root_fs2_vp using that.
Anyway, (if they fix that) I really would advice you to buy it from GOG if you need to geto FS2 (or original FS). These guys deserve support.

Well that's not good then. Is it just root vp or are others not patched as well?
-
Nothing else to be patched I'd say. Binaries are 1.20 and the big vp's were not patched afair (don't see any difference when comparing them to what I have after patch).

:wtf: What friends?

I wonder if we'd be pushing our luck if we distributed the 1.2 Root_fs2.vp in some manner. I mean, it's not like people could get a commercial game for free if they downloaded just one file.

Simply extract it from there.
Don't use any of the exe's as the ones you have are better. In fact if someone could send me a copy of the GoG executables and a screenshot of their folder it would be helpful whenever I have to troubleshoot any problems with their version.

Y'know, I'd say we should simply advise people to build their own install of FS open. Just pull the data directory tree and the core VPs to a new folder, delete the GOG install. I did that ages ago, and only bought a copy of FS2 from GOG in order to make sure I have a fully legal copy with no gray areas.
That said, I'll quickly install the GOG copy I do have because I'm curious to see what they've done.

Attached as a plain-text file too. It looks like people can do exactly what I suggested to make their own FSOpen install if they have no desire to keep retail around. They just have to get an updated root VP file.

Good. Because
Anyone caught posting links to FS2 for download other than an official site such as GoG will be banned. I don't care what bull**** reason they give for it.
-
There's nothing about sending them via PMs though. :p Not that I'm gonna try, cause I don't want to get the wrath of HLP on me.
-
There's absolutely no reason to do so anyway, unless you're trying to help some cheap **** who won't even shell out the price of a Big Mac for the game.
