What do I need to see a pilot flying a ship from the outside and how do i get to see the HUD. For example like when I fly the ship inside the ship i get to see the control panels.

The "show ship" flag in ships.tbl will allow you to see the cockpit.

If HUD is turned off (it's on by default) then you will need to turn it back on again (and I'm not sure if there is a default key binding for this one, IIRC it is bound to "O")

If that doesn't work, then I suggest you upgrade your video card drivers.

It should be noted that the "show ship" flag only works if the ship model has a built-in cockpit.

If you're after chase view rather than cockpit view you use * on the numeric keypad to get that. No need to edit anything.
