Hi people! On the 5th of March, I'll be going into the army and I will not be around this forum for some time. Before I go in, I decided to do a little render. May not be great but its something I thought I had to do. Don't ask me what. Here it is.
I will come back i a few weeks' time. I hope.:)

We'll miss you NeoHunter :(
If your CO gives you an order, say "yub yub commander" to him and then tell us what he said when you get back...;)

Thanks everyone. I promise not to come back with any new holes too, Corsair.:D
I will miss this forum and its people here. And its antics and other stuff. Try not to consume too much SpaceCrack and then start making new holes in Carl the Shivan. You boys play nice, okay?:p
Well, I've got about approximately 14 hours left of civilian life. Hope to see you guys in three weeks' time then.
Before I leave, I just want to say something...

Well best of luck buddy....my 5 years in gave me alot of good memories. just keep a few things in mind and boot will be a breeze:
1: Beat your face means do push ups,..yes we actually had a kid in boot that punched himself
2: Leave your g/f's undies at home, ...locker inspections get really embaressing (yup had a kid that got busted with that too)
3: All MOSes include the sub-mos of janiter, you'll soon become and expect at polishing, using a floor buffer, and other annoying talents. Tip, believe it or not shaving cream gives on hell of a good shine, but never...I repeat NEVER use Johnson's floorwax, your DI slips he WILL kill you
(heheh but that was funny as all hell)
Just remember it can always be worse than whatever the preset problem is, they don't expect you to know everything, just act like you either now it or you know how to learn it and you're golden to them.
So best of luck bro!!!!! Once you get through boot and AIT look us up and give us the update,..I'd love to see how it's changed :D
-
BOY DONT YOU LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT YOU DIRTY PILE OF ****!
I GOT A GOD DAMN PAIR OF SOCKS THAT HAS MORE SENSE THAN YOU QUEERS! JESUS H. CHRIST SON! GET YOUR ASS IN GEAR AND MOVE MOVE MOVE!!!!!
hehe thought you might wanna get used to it...it's just 8 weeks of that then it ok. :) Just stay away from those navy boys, after 6 weeks on that ship they act kinda funny. If ya know what I mean. ;)
-
Oh, I know exactly what you mean

I did say to our "untrained foreign stupid American tourist ears" ;)
Personally, I think most Americans should just stay at home and not leave the good old U.S. cuz we can be such obnoxious tourists sometimes, always expecting the host country to learn our language. We are complete idiots sometimes...I mean, look at our president! A "C" average student who only went to Yale because his dad was so rich and he had a drunk driving arrest! (sorry just venting some anger here) :D
*Runs away from citizens of all other countries who hate the stupid Americans who completely changed the course of the world starting in about 1918 and made them learn another language*

Ahhh but remember...in today's army it's not the total amount of troops that count...it's their video game scores :D

lol, I have nothing against england actually (apart from this particular girl.. oh well, never mind), it's just that I don't know any other people more proud to belong to their own country than US people.

Good lord... Man I remember when I went into the service. Its forced over here.... But after boot camp, it was really sweet. Made lots of friends, shot with automatic rifles, blew stuff up and got screamed at alot. But man was it fun! :D

Britain is downright fanatical. You've got the IRA proud to be Irish, the Ulster Unionists who are proud to be...err...Irish, the Scottish Nationalist Political Activists who are proud to be Scottish, the BNP who are proud to be English/British. Then you've got the Pakistanis, Indian, Turks and Koreans who are all proud to be British. The only people who aren't proud to be British are the Africans.
And the American people didn't give a **** about their country (they may have thought they did but they didn't) until someone smashed two jumbo-jets into it.

That is what we like to refer to as a wake up call.

So true... In fact, I had said after the fact that we are so much more diversified than even 1941-1945 that patriotism is so different now. As in nonexistent (until 9/11) Now that some guys got on two different planes and rammed them into some really big buildings and killed a lot of people we get really
- Pissed off at everybody and tell them to cooperate or else (Dubya throwing around the military might again) and
- Yay rah rah USA! patriotic
maybe in the end 9/11 was actually good for us in the fact that it
was a wakeup call and it said ""We are just as vulnerable as anybody else!"
But then this whole unpatriotic thing in the USA goes back to the fact that we are a gigantic melting pot and all kinds of people come here and are many times more loyal to their old country than to their new.

ya, i was pissed after 9/11, especially since i had friends who died in that incident. As for patriotism? I was born in China, I am Chinese, and I still love the U.S. of A. one hell of a lot more.

I didn't say everybody who immigrates to the US has more loyalty to their home country, just some

Techincal, bastard...:D
As for patrotism after 9/11...MHO is still the same. I don't agree with liberals and I don't like trendy things such as the new "crave" which is patroitism.(sp*) Most ppl now I noticed are more self centered and have what old ppl call "lesser morals", I agree with the old ppl to an extend. But who cares what I think, I'm the guy that gets bored and wrights a bunch of stuff on his arm at school that offends everybody. Next time ill get a camera and show ya.

Oh hell, they're all Romans, exept for those that lived on Scotland, Ireland or on the wrong side of the Rine/Danube/Roman borders of course :D

I'm American-born and raised (until age 10). I'm more "proud" to live in Israel than I am to be American. I have my choice of where to live, and I'm perfectly fine right where I am, thank you very much.
Patriotisim is over-rated. C'mon, folks - where's the patriotisim in all the flag-flying and American breast-beating after a common enemy has shown his face? Yippee - America was attacked, so the Americans now all have more or less the same "love" for their country and desire to see justice brought against those who hurt them. So what - that would happen in any country that comes under attack - having a common enemy and all that.
It's the pre-9/11 America that shows how "patriotic" Americans truly are. Courage is not standing your ground when you don't have a choice - courage is standing your ground when you have the option of falling back. Patriotisim is the same - show me how patriotic Americans are when they don't have any special threat facing them.
True patriotisim is showing your love for your country without any special reason to, aside from the love you feel in and of itself.
PS. Sorry for the America-bashing, but I feel that I can get away with it, simply because I'm just as American as the rest of them. So no offense, dudes. :)
-

lol, that's exactly why I think patriotism of any kind is stupid. :D Nations are merely people grouped together usually either by their physical location or out of temporary necessity; every nation contains both good and bad people, and it makes no sense to be proud of the whole thing. I was born in the US and have spent almost all of my life here, but if I had a choice I would live here anyway since it effectively leads the world in scientific and technological progress. (which is all I care about :D) I don't really care about the nation as a whole though; it is just another institution, its members united only by their location. (it used to be by loosely defined ideas, but those faded away over time) I think that this patriotic surge in the US due to 9/11 will die down over the course of the year and things will return to normal; the signs of it can already be seen now.;)
-
well, not that I want to defend USA or anything, but in France, they've always been considered as the most patriotic people in the world. Maybe that's cliché (just like frenchs with the bread stick under the shoulder and the beret on :p ), but we always imagine americans with their flag in the house, stuff like that. I don't know any other people who would do that.
-

:wtf: Maybe during World War II but not anymore. Well, not until after 9/11. Now yes. Before, no. Nobody honestly cared about the US before 9/11, but now that we're the victims for once, everybody is patriotic.
Truthfully, patriotism can be very stupid at times. Of course be loyal to your country (or the country that you believe in) but there are certain things that some people do for their country that can be completely ridiculous.
-
I prefer not to be patrotic, but I do respect the country I live in and I doubt I would want to live anywhere else. I'm not going to go around saying "God Bless America" and where american flags yadda yadda yadda. But I will contribute to military services if or when it is needed. And I do pity those who go flee to Canada like a coward or those who agree with Jane Fonda...*cough*******cough*. Sorry got a cold ;)

You may of saved the continentals but the British won the battle of britian. Im very Patriotic but for no other reason than love of country(England namely, but it applies to Britian as well, its funny how some people think Scotland and Wales are just counties :D). I always have a Union Jack in my pocket around school(its funny when someone borrowed it, stood up in class and started signing god save to queen).

Please...The queen needs to be put out of her misery lol j/k
She like a 100,000,000,000,000 years old now...
-
I don't really get it though; why is the queen still there? The power is all delegated to the parliament and the royal family really does nothing in running the government; the Prime Minister should be the figurehead, not the queen or king or whatever...
I like some of the ideals that the US is founded upon and, more importantly, the fact that it is the leading nation is terms of scientific and technological progress, but the nation is full of idiots (just like any other) and since I try to base my thoughts on rationality and logic alone, I am not really patriotic either. ;)

They are just their, nobody cares about them, so nobody bothered to get rid of them, also the Queen serve as the Head of State in Austraila and New Zealand(technically you could consider them British territory to this day).
Not enough Tradition in this world, political correctness, its a world gone mad.

How about a medal, a cookie, and a pat on the back?
I hate Bush too, he really pisses me off. I mean, who thinks that a president should have drunk driving arrests going on in everybody in his family? And he only went to Yale because his dad went there and is so rich! (then he got a C average!)

LOL yeah, Bush is a real idiot (literally); it is sometimes almost comical to hear the mistakes he makes during his speeches and some of the really crazy stuff he says during interviews. I think what he is doing so far in response to events is good, but anyone else could have done it just as well. :p

this country SUCKS!!!!
the tax is astronomical (40% income tax, 17.5% Sales, 80% petrol!!!!!!!), and the entire place is falling to peices (NHS, higher education system and voter apathy are just a few examples).
Plus that and the fact all the pubs close at 11:30pm :(

New Englanders speak wierd with the T's mostly and some other words that get annoying. But at least you don't talk like the Brit with the miss pronounation(sp) of Aluminum(sp?).
Now those Canada's they speak it perfectly, so lets go bomb'em somethin. :D

tell me if im wrong, but isnt the sense of patriotism most obvious in Asian countries. I think its got to do with the fact that they r some of the oldest nations, and have all had a patch of terrible history that followed a even more glorious past, that they r all now struggling to re-attain that lost respect, and this drives them to be intensely patriotic, the knowledge of a glorious past. We all think how great we were. Also, Asia is possibly the most embattled part of the world, that tends to keep morale and patriotic feelings high.
I'm from India , as u might have noticed, and its the continuous fighting with neighbouring Pakistan, lack of trust in the Chinese for their epic backstab of 1962 , and the fact that no one in particular likes us, except for Russia, that has hardened us and makes our soldiers fight to hold every inch of land that makes up our country. Their ferocity in combat is magnified cos of the fact that large portions of our land are occupied by our neighbours,China and Pakistan.
Regarding US patriotism and 9/11, i think US citizens have always been patriotic, just that 9/11 showed them that they were not safe as they thought they were, and opened their eyes to the problems of the world. A certain paranoid reaction kicked in, which isnt patriotism, its fear and hatred, not very correct emotions, and im glad its fading away.
-
btw , which countries r u guys from, where u have to go join the army?
-
He's American I think
-
Yeah, Asian countries do have long histories which their people are proud of, but India seems to be the big exception there IMHO with regards to patriotism. The poverty issues are probably a major factor; the terrorist groups take advantage of that when recruiting new members. They basically find the poor people and offer them some money to fight; the people are already struggling to make ends meet and decide to fight against their country for a small amount of money.
India has had a long history of being too "soft" with its enemies. A recent example is Mohandas Gandhi (who I personally think was one of the worst men in recent history), but the trend goes back for thousands of years. This probably is related to the Hindu philosophy of tolerance and such, but it doesn't work in the practical world. For example, when Bangladesh seceded from Pakistan in 1979, I think that India should have taken Pakistan right there; any other nation in the same situation would have done just that.
I agree there; this surge of patriotism probably stems from a fear of the unknown rather than true love of country. (serves the same purpose as religion in this respect) It should die down soon enough though. :)
The funny thing is that almost nobody in the US had ever heard of Osama bin Laden or al Qaeda before September 11, but they had been involved in a number of atrocities against the US since 1990. (1993 WTC incident, US embassies in Sudan and Kenya, USS Cole, etc.)
BTW I have also heard that "nucular" thing a couple of times; I think it is more of a mispronounciation than an accent. Coming from a guy like Bush though, it isn't really surprising. :D

yeah , we should have wiped pakistan out in '71, but unfortunately for us, the US at that time was a big freind of Pakistan, and they didnt like what was happening, so much so that they moved their carrier group into the bay of Bengal, within striking distance of the battle zone in the east. :mad2: :(
and also u must forget China, they just love Pak for some reason i cant understand

The webster.com site lists the actual definition in the aluminum entry (with "aluminium" being the British spelling), as do all of the periodic tables I have seen, so I will continue using that. ;)

Bah....Alominium is the way most brits I've heard say it and excuse me but we Americans don't speak english. We speak Mexican(not spannish), ebonics(some what like swahili), and Anglish(no explaination there of course). :D

Woah! I'm gone for like amlmost three weeks and this thread has become SUPER off topic?! Hehe:p
Anyway, today is my first book out. It feels so good to be back to civilization. Where I don't get to see my platoon seargent everyday, where the sun does not seem to be twice as hot and I do not have to do push ups everytime the platoon seargent gets pissed off by our marching. By the way, when the platoon seargent says "knock it down", it means push ups. And when we have to do it, he makes sure we suffer by making us go down when he says "down". When he does not say that, we hold the standby position. Means our hands and legs are supporting the whole body. It is really tiring I tell you. If someone does not do it right and we have already done maybe about 15 push ups, he will tell us to start from zero again. Sucks huh?
Anyway, just came back here to see how everything and everybody (not to mention Shivan) is doing here. Seems the same.:)
-
Makes me wanna join the Army :D Welcome back
-
Thanks. But I won't be staying for long. I have to go back to the barracks by tomorrow 2030 hours Singapore time.
-
Bring us back something dangerous, like a gun or something.......not like some weird disease
-
I wished I could but it is a chargable offense to even bring out from camp a spent round!!! Sigh....so strict...
Anyway, the M16 is not that heavy and the recoil is quite little. The marksmanship test is next next week. Hope I can pass.

Oy, that push-ups thing sound quite familiar... :D
Yeah, the M-16 is a nice gun. Which one do you guys use, long, short, A3 - and what add-ons? I wanna know! :D
Oh, yes: WELCOME BACK! :)
-
Oh, I think I'm using the M16S1. I do not know what the S1 really means but my guess is that it has been modified or something to fit smaller asian soldiers like me.
The various modifications for the M16S1 that are available here are the M203 Grenade Launcher, the sniper scope and the deflector. The deflector is for people who are left handed.
Explaination: the M16S1 ejects spent rounds from right hand side of the rifle. So, if you were left handed, without the deflector, the spent rounds will just fly straight into your eyes. The deflector is placed over the ejector (I do not know the exact name) and causes ejected rounds to fly AWAY from the firer's eyes.
The M16S1 weights about 2.8kg with out magazine and 3.6kg with a full 30 round magazine. The M16S1 rifle fires 5.56mm rounds. Types of rounds it can fire are ball (means not really that sharp point), tracer (for night shooting. Leaves a red trail like lasers from Star Wars and flares on impact) and drill (for drill lessons only) rounds.
I also had to undergo a training and test to see how fast I can strip and re-assemble the rifle in under one minute. Quite easy to strip and assemble. I manage to do both in under half a minute.

Yep, I had the grenade launcher for the first week or so of my recent reserves, until I discovered that under semi-intense vibrations (i.e. riding in an APC), the clip would fall out - it's catch was messed up! So they replaced it with a normal M-16 since they didn't have any grenade rounds to allocate to me anyways. :p
I must say, the addition of the grenade launcher makes the gun a heck of a lot more stable during firing (heavier), and hence more accurate. :D
Hehehe - I came home once with the gun that had the grenade launcher add-on. I went to town with my friends, gun strapped to my back (hey, I live in Jerusalem, remember? :p), and we went into the local Blockbuster. We were browsing the titles when my friend picked up a video case, pointed to the picture, and then at the gun on my back. The case was "Predator", and I had the exact same gun as did Arnold. :p :D

Yup, we have those, too.

I don't think I've ever seen a ball round, but we'd use single tracers for pointing out where the target(s) were at night - at least, that was the theory. ;) Our training rounds were rounds that were dirtied and didn't look at that reliable on the outside. But they can kill just as easily as new rounds.
I also had to undergo a training and test to see how fast I can strip and re-assemble the rifle in under one minute. Quite easy to strip and assemble. I manage to do both in under half a minute.
Yeah, the M-16 is pretty simple once you get to know it. At some point after the army I saw T2 again, and it looked to me like whats-her-face, the mom, really did know how to take apart an M-16 for inspection.

Bring me back an M-4 flash muzzle the 30 round clips with the shorty stock....I'll pay ya for it. :)

Sorry, no M-4 here. Only M16s, GPMG, SAW and others....
-
:( Had a chance to buy a M-16 but never liked the size of it. I buy most guns in a youth model, even larger rifles change out the old beat up stocks with the heavier synthetic ones. If ya run across an MG3 STEAL IT!!!! :D

Looks a lot like the Israeli Negev (http://www.imi-israel.com/imi/doa_iis.dll/Serve/item/English/1.1.2.12.2.3.html) (the weapon, not the desert! :p). Sounds like it has the same features, too.

Ahh, yes - we call them the MAG (stands for something in Hebrew, but it works just as well in English - MAchine Gun  ). You can see a few of them in the background of the pictures I put up here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,6189.0.html). :D
Oh yes, and while you're at it, check out Israel's latest, the Tavor (http://www.imi-israel.com/imi/doa_iis.dll/Serve/Item/English/1.1.2.12.2.5.html). (http://www.imi-israel.com/images/tarbig.jpg)

I should have expected this I guess...hehehe.....
I'm back, Setekh. What took you so long to notice?!:p
Looking at the Tavor and the SAR 21 and then there is the Steyr Aug, I wonder if having bigger trigger guards and ammo magazines behind is the trend now?
The good things about the SAR 21 is that it is lighter than the M16, the length is made more for Asians and there is no need to zero the rifle sinice you use the scope.

Oh yeah......well, after using it for a few times, I think it is not a really good rifle.....prone to faults when firing and you have to zero the rifle...
The Tavor looks good too. It can fit a M203 Grenade Launcher. Good for blasting small obstacles.

I remember my time in the RAF cadets, 2:30am, winter, sleeping in a tent on my own, then having to stand two. CO was real angry, made us go on a "little" run.

Here's a little history about the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) for you guys. Some of you may or may not know this but the SAF was established with the help of the Israelis. Back then, Singapore was independent from Malaysia and the British pulled their forces out. When nobody wanted to help us establish an army, the Israelis came along and helped us.
That's what my seargent told me.

Very true - from what I understand the Israeli Army has had a hand in helping to establish and/or train numerous militaries and military branchess around the world - especially special forces units. :D

Singapore. But the training camp for recruits is actually on an island called Pulau Tekong north east of Singapore. Somewhere between Singapore and Malaysia.
You can check it out on some web site I think that feature detailed maps of the area.
There is a risk of malaria because the camp is actually surrounded by dense forests and we have to go into these areas for field camp. Our field camp which lasted ten days just finished yesterday.

Those malaria pill aren't so great are they? I had to take those once...man those were nasty!:mad2:

Actually, the malaria pills are tasteless. We just drink it down with water. Very small pill. I even tried swallowing one without water. No sweat!:p

The mosquitoes remind me of my visits to India; the little buggers are literally all over the place. I have to use all sorts of mosquito-repellent things and take similar malaria tablets before going there. :p (along with practicing my mad swatting skillz :D)

Oh well....just be careful of mosquitoes with black and white strips. They are the ones which carry the Dengue(sp?) fever virus...
