I've been all over this concept ever since I saw that trailer.  I know it'd utterly screw with my fear of heights, but who gives a damn. :p

I just can't believe EA is making such an awesome game.

Here's hoping they don't screw it up.

I bet that's what people were thinking with Spore???

Spore was made of fail because of DRM and repetitive gameplay. Mirror's Edge looks more appealing. The Parkour element, if properly implemented, could turn the game into the next Portal.

as is Prince of Persia by the way.
I am a huge fan of this stuff (and like to do this myself, although not as over the top as in these games of course  ;7).

I've played a very small part of it (basically the main bit from the videos), and its going to be pretty sweet i think. The default controls are a little odd at first, but they start to grow on you as you use it.  graphically its amazing.  Combat was dead hard, but i think it'll make sense if you actually know what you're doing.  can't wait to see it in full

Played the demo of this that was released just recently. I've been interested since those trailers were released, but actually playing it just launched the game to the top of my to-buy list. Brilliant fun.

Deadspace will probably be my next purchase. Need to read up on it / play a demo first.

Just rent Dead Space. It's a lot of fun but it hasn't much replay value.

I guess it depends on how you judge a game purchase-worthy. I've always bought on quality, never length.

Oh, me too, but I've got to be frugal, and if I'm going to only play the game once -- even if I treasure the memory! -- I can't justify $60.

That said, I loved Dead Space and I'm looking forward to any possible sequel. I played it with a large audience and it was a blast -- some of the deaths got a ton of cheers, in particular. And I had to play the final boss battle upside down in order to complete it, which earned standing applause. It was fun!

EDIT: can't justify 60, not can

I love the idea, but I doubt I'll get more than one play through of this game. The gameplay seems to...stale.

Sure, the trailers look awesome, but the only thing I imagine when playing this game is doing those 5 minutes of gameplay over and over again.

But then again, that's just my innate cynicism talking. EA isn't exactly known for the best games, though, in my book.

finished the full game. Cool. Short but cool.

Only thing that bothers me are the insurrance-like comic cutscenes :ick: . They feel so out of place.
Ingame cinematics are nice but those are just plain ugly. Guess they had a serious time problemt there.

sorry, I know that portal has the editor, but I was trying to say that the replay-ability of the game is dependent on its (map editor's)  inclusion
demo was quite fun, but am now re-disappointed by EA in that the game does not have an editor, likely for a sequel  :doubt:
^yeah, those cinematics look lame,

and the fact that EA suspended a map amker/editor for a SEQUEL is the other nail in the coffin

divine realisation

wouldn;t it be somethin if it turned out that, during a *sequel* you find out you are "delivering bombs to terrorists so they can't plant them under their sliver-haired mums"?

THAT would be a decent twist

Source?

That really sucks if it's true. A sequel would have a good chance of ironing out a lot of its flaws. More importantly, if this fails EA's going to be even less likely to take risks in future.

The source is a german gaming website called demonews.de, which is usually very reliable.
In case you can't speak German, Ransom, those two numbers are sold units in Europe and USA in the first week.

I wouldn't give up hope yet. Think of all the movies that sucked and still got a sequel.

Or maybe another company will rip off the game but do a better job.

That isn't how the industry works. Those movies got sequels because they sold well.

Damn. That is pretty dismal.

new numbers: 300,000 copies sold in USA on BOTH consoles (numbers from last week).
That's bad.
Hopes are on the PC version now.

I guess it depends on how you judge a game purchase-worthy. I've always bought on quality, never length.

me too. And you can't deny that ME is brilliant fun, fleeing from choppers, doging bullets, racing and kicking through hordes of police officers. And who needs that stupid RunnersVision, first thing I did when getting the game (before even trying it out) was turning it out  :).
SpeedRunning through known chapters sucks, that's right. But the core mechanics are just awesome.

You're a Prince of Persia fan too Ransom?

I am. Haven't played the new one yet, but it's on my to-buy list.

I turned the runner vision off as well. I found once I'd done that I wasn't constantly hunting around for red bits and the levels actually flowed better.

Surprising news!

EA aim to give Mirror's Edge a sequel despite its poor performance. Sounds like they acknowledge and plan on fixing the complaints, too.

That isn't how the industry works. Those movies got sequels because they sold well.

What defines selling well? Making money, or making ****loads of money? With 300,000 units sold, is Mirror's Edge losing money? That's the important thing. Just because they didn't sell a gazillion doesn't mean it's still not a financial success.
Title: Re: Mirror's Edge
Post by: Ransom on December 10, 2008, 01:20:32 am
It's hard to answer that directly without knowing what the budget for Mirror's Edge was, but you have to do more than break even to get a sequel in normal conditions. There needs to be a good chance of both return customers and bringing in new ones. With the lukewarm response to Mirror's Edge neither of those is a given, which would normally discount an immediate sequel in any industry.

Movies also aren't a solid comparison in that regard because Direct-to-DVD movies provide an outlet for sequels to underperforming films. There isn't really an analogue to that in the game industry.
Title: Re: Mirror's Edge
Post by: Akalabeth Angel on December 10, 2008, 02:18:56 am
Well Mirror's Edge has been out how long, a couple of weeks? According to some website I found the average video game released on both consoles only sells 408,336 units. If ME is already 3/4s of the way to the average after only a week or two, odds are it will probably exceed that average with the xmas season coming up. The same report, says only 20% of video games are profitable.

http://blog.mlive.com/manzero/2008/11/only_20_of_games_make_profit_s.html (http://blog.mlive.com/manzero/2008/11/only_20_of_games_make_profit_s.html)

Of course, it all depends on the game's budget a well, which unlike movies is probably not something that is readily available. I've also seen on other websites that it may have had some competition released against big titles like Gears2, Resistance2 etcetera. Games which may already have followings as opposed to a new game which does not despite whatever hype it may have.

So who knows. The customers will have their say and then the tie-bound pencil pushers can decide on the game's future.

EDIT - that same website also says that 25,000 units sold is equal to about 1million in revenue. So with 300k sold it's made what, 12 million dollars? I'm not sure what the average video game budget is these days. . . .

It will most likely sell a few more what with kids spending xmas cash in the boxing day period. . . .although i'd probably buy fallout 3 (again) if i was in that position.
