Latest Info: 11/16/2010: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=57222.msg1435859#msg1435859
So i know ive made random posts here and there on the subject but here is the full deal.
Old news:
Ipower.com was HC's web hoster ever since the site was moved off of Swooh, then HC had a great run with the new hosts until one day, they decide to upgrade their server OS, then on this fateful day something happened with the server itself, what exactly that is, i still dont know, but it had a multitude of effects, ranging from image links breaking, even when they pointed to the right direction, with the correct file at the destination, strangely enough, to corrupting our databases. After working with them for countless hours it turns out they didnt have any backups made before the server transition and there was nothing they could do or even tell me what they corrupted/changed... Great... I've tried fixing the databases, no effect, then restoring the old backups I had saved, but due to something with their new servers being different than when HC was backed up, that got corrupted to, and this time even worse.
Next there's the wonderful event that happened recently where while ipower was supposed to keep the adress registered and attached to my account, they somehow let that slip, which means the address www.hades-combine.com is no longer owned by me.
Basically Ipower totally reemed me after some 5 years of me paying for their service.
And for our furture:
Since the databases/web portal/forum are all damaged beyond repair at this point there's not much that can be done besides salvaging any small bits of data still left untouched, then totaly rebuilding the portal/forum on a new server. HC as a full fleged website will probably be down for a long time, so dont hold your breath on that one.
However, the good news is, HC still does exist at least until next summer when our lease runs out (which by then i hope to find a new host to begin the rebuilding process), if not as a shadow of its former self, but some critical pieces are still left intact.
Including... *drum roll* .... The downloads!!!!
http://hades-co.ipower.com/web/mkportal/modules/downloads/file/
all the files should be ok, you just need to rename the extension to .rar after downloading (some of the downloads may be .exe's or .zip's , sorry i dont know which are which, but 99% are rars
Also all hosted project files are still accessible by their members ftp accounts (change host adress to match above) and if anyone wants some free space (even if its not FS related) id be happy to offer ftp accounts, since there's still tons of free space.
Id be happy to answer any questions, just realize it may take me a bit to respond as im rarely on HLP anymore, but i'll make a point of checking this thread when i can.
Id also like to take this opportunity to thank Spicious and Cobra for all the help they've offered over the years, HC would of never made it to the point it got to without their help.
THANKS DUDES!! :D

Cool, some people were looking for those files. Seems like we got access to all of 'em. Though the .mk extension isn't familiar to me.

Mk Portal (the web portal HC used) renames the extension of files once added to the download database, probably for database retrieval information.
-
Bah, so you can't get it back, eh?
Here's hoping we get the site back. :)
And we can put Freespacemods.net out of business... Mwahahaha....
-
Just go save link as -> and change the extension to .rar
I did that, and I got some neat stuff off there :D

Well those model dumps look tasty.
I'm not at home right now, but I'll download some of that next week if its still up.
-
Drat. The Internet Archive only saved the first three layers of the website. Anything beyond the category page for Downloads has been lost. :(
-

:eek2: It amazes me these people managed to keep it going for 5 years.
-
Would it be possible to get this thread stickied? or the link put somewhere so people know where to go now for all the files?
-
Poeple, now let's reupload those files to the FSMODS :D
-
Sticky'd, and newsified to boot.

Sweet, thanks dude.

WHAT! Why should we? Hades-Combine all the way! :P

Since when did backups hurt? :p
-
WHAT! Why should we? Hades-Combine all the way! :P
Because FSMods is generally more stable.
And I'm an admin over there. :nervous:
-
You can never have files in too many places, as anyone who's ever suffered a hard drive failure can attest.

We all know you came up with FSMods just to copy us. :nervous:

We all came up with FSMods to replace the site that went down under.

I honestly never expected FSMods to take off, but I came around very shortly (Just a few days IIRC) after HC went down. I started the site because it seemed like HC wasn't all that active, and I got tired of mirroring everything I saw myself. I figured, hey, why not turn it into a community effort?
Now I host the official downloads for FSPort, SA, TVWP, The Babylon Project, and EBW. I host some of the campaigns for Turey's installer, the project forums for TotT and The Shard of Infinity, scoobydoo's models, and all the mods on the main page.
I'm satisfied. :p

I award you the Moderator Gold Star. :D
-
You call that a gold star? :doubt:
You can make (or find) a better gold star, Goober :P
-
Was wondering where that little bit under Mongoose's title came from...
-
Yeah, the forum-supplied gold star was obviously inadequate. Wikipedia to the rescue. :D
-
Oh wow. That thing is huge by comparison.
-
It's the same size as the other badges.
Now, back on topic, or I shall have to split the thread.
-
Ooh, shiny. :D
...yeah. Topic.
-
/me bangs his head on the keyboard.
Internet Archive always fails when you need to get something from it.

HC was supposed to be a wide community effort, however no one ever applied for the ftp accounts, (with exception of a few through the php uploader who contributed) and ipower wouldn't let me change the server-based 2mb php upload limit. However other than when the databases overloaded from an influx of new users over a couple months, HC never went down due to actual server disconnection once.
Never fear though, ive been coming up with some interesting revamp ideas and plan on taking some php classes so you may want to stay on your toes :P

Do we need EVERY single file? And converting to .rar only takes my back to the .mk files. :( Help please?

try zip or iso
AND do we need every single file? I just want the basic Freespace 2 ones. Nothing else. How can I pinpoint those specific ones?
-
I just want the basic Freespace 2 ones.
:wtf: Which "basic Freespace 2 ones"?
-
Wait................what are all these files EXACTLY for?
-
Er, these are mostly third-party addons, which need their .mk extension changed so you can open and extract them.
-
Erm..Nevermind now. I have a new problem.
-
So... any news? Hows the rebuilding going?
-
:( Seems the backup site is now down too. Luckily I saved the entirety of HC somewhere, I just don't have it on me at the moment.

AUUuguugugughhh!
-
Well at least you bothered to post here (even if its been weeks/months). That means its not dead :)
-
Until we hear from Krackers87 himself...
-
Coming up on one year since this thread was started....any progress on getting a new database/webhost?
-
And the backup file host site is down :(
Good thing I downloaded the entire backup before that happened.
-
Is this really a 'new' topic? I thought this was talked about a long time ago. This thread should be a neccgrogated thread unless something new happened.
-
No its not its the old topic unstickied.
-
So its new news? And now that means Ihave to read that big first megapost... sigh
-
No it isn't new.
-
Ugh, that's what dates are for. The 'news' is that the link in the OP doesn't work anymore. So I was inquiring if there was any other news on that. Still relevant to the original post, and instead of linking to this thread in a new thread, made more sense to reply.

What have The Powers That Be said in the past about people crying "necro!"?
-
You mean like this?
:necro:
Yeah it's necro, I don't care that someone called it, as long as it's tongue in cheek. As long as it's not used to deride someone, I don't personally care. In this case I guess there was just some confusion as to the reason for my necro.
-
Well, it is relevant to the topic...
-
/me slaps chief1983 around a bit with a large trout
-
Well, that was certainly helpful. If there is nothing else to say here, I guess it might as well be locked. Maybe I'll have to figure out how to upload my HC backup somewhere. It's substantial, that's for sure.
-

How about an FTP account on fsmods so I can sort through all of the stuff someday?
-
That'd work. As long as we could get to the files before they've been sorted, like with the previous HC dump. That seemed to suffice at least.
-

Sorry, that was just a bit of tongue-in-cheek about the necro beam. I have no problem at all with the bump post; it was just Charismatic's usual irritation that annoyed me. It'd be awesome if you were able to get your backup uploaded somewhere for general perusal.
(One thing, though: I think the HC dump contained the FS2 .iso files, so it'd be a good idea to strip those out first.)
-
I haven't the foggiest idea what you're talking about. Now go away, or I shall taunt you a second time.
-
I'm guessing there's no chance of Chief posting that backup somewhere, right?
-
Too much to upload from my house, probably gonna try to drop it on my flash drive and upload it at work, hopefully soon.
-
Looking forward to it. Archive.org shows that this was probably one of the best asset resources for HLP as a whole, sorry I missed it.
-
I have one, and i believe i still have the means to upload it. Will repost with results in a few hours tops.
So... any news? Hows the rebuilding going?
The concept is there, and i have been experimenting with ideas, however i lack the skill needed to write extensive php, and no webportal I've found really provides what i was looking for.
Edit: Found a 500mb rar of the HC backup. Uploading it at the moment.
-
I've already been uploading my backup to FSMods ;)
-
Well, heres the downloads file section packaged into .rar from what was sitting on my HD
Part 1: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VFYXNT04
Part 2: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3TWJEBV1
Part 3: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=I4JVXC0V
Part 4: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TV6GN10I
Edit: For those interested in what i was hoping to accomplish, was to revive HC in the form of a collaborative mods project site, where mods no matter how small could be made open source, in a similar fashion the way linux is distributed and contributed to freely.
This project would have pages for each mod, such as a single fighter, where lets say a 2d artist cam and uploaded a sketch or schematic type drawing, starting the project off, then members would be able to download the current files, then upload their changes, modifications or additions as a new version, that would sit next to the old revision, similar to how wikipedia handles their old edits system. This way it keeps someone from overwriting the previous work if some duchebag comes along, or any kind of error occurs during the upload.
So lets say a 2d design artist uploads their schematic, preferably high definition images;
Next a 3d modeler comes along and lays out the basic groundwork, taking those images and crafting the general model out of it, then uploads it next to the basic schematic pictures.
several other 3d modelers come along, downloading the previously uploaded basic model, adding bits or changes they think works with the model. A vote system can help suggest which uploaded versions should continue to be worked on if there are conflicting changes.
2d design artists can then begin contributing skinning and UV wrapping, with people offering whatever they are best at.
Scripters can do their bit, and so on and so forth..
Each project would also have a mini forum or at the very least, comments section to allow contributors or interested parties to contribute or discuss suggestions. Also perhaps a voting system to determine whether different aspects or stages can be considered in a final or acceptable condition. This wouldn't prevent accessing the older revisions however, its more of a thermometer type of deal, to suggest what the collective opinion is on what needs to be worked on next to streamline time spent.
This is kind of my dead end, where i cannot find worthwhile web portals that would support something like this, even with 3rd party addons, and this kind of thing is certainly out of my coding ability.
Edit 2: The core idea of this was meant to solve some of the problems i remember plaguing the general growth of various mods of different sizes stalling or taking vast amounts of time to reach a finished state, either due to individual abilities or outside circumstance and what have you. Besides, another excuse for many a delay, including my own procrastination on generally most everything Ive tried to do here, is having RL issues, which we all have, and leaves many of our free stretches of time short and sporadic. To combat this limited free modding time availability problem, this project would allow minor contributions to be made frequently and by many, much in the way torrents distribute different pieces to many computers for the purposes of channeling massive bandwidth with many individual low bandwidth computers more efficiently.
If i could find people who could help make this a possibility i have the time and the server.
Edit 3:
So its new news? And now that means Ihave to read that big first megapost... sigh
You may have suffered, but perhaps others may be saved your fate. Compacted old news for safety purposes.
-
I think the open source model building might just work on freespacemods- the site has the ability to create categories/sections/etc, to upload lots of models, and there is a comments section and screenshot available for each mod.
If each model got it's own category until finished (such as "GTF Whatever"; similar to the "Fighters", "Bombers", "Small combat vessels", etc), with each newer version being uploaded to said category, this stuff will work. When the model gets finished it could get moved to the proper downloads section, and the incomplete version could be either archived or deleted- along with it's developing category.
Let's see Swantz's opinion about this though.
-
The idea would require massive alteration of core e107 components, or the writing of a fairly extensive plugin, if possible. Kracker's idea basically sounds like a public mini-svn for each project. I would do it if I had the time or PHP skills. Maybe I could pitch the idea to someone I know who most certainly does have the PHP skill, he's been dying to work on something lately anyway.
-
I can advise on a PHP project but any time I'm doing actual PHP work for HLP it's already going towards another project.
-
<3 ;D

You serious?
-
If I can get up with the guy I know, or even better, if QD and chief want to work on this idea; I am serious.
-
Actually QD was referring to the project I'm already working on I believe, not this one.
-
Exactly! :)

That would be quite awesome, again, i have server space on reserve, unless the plan is to host it on fsmods
-
*bump*
Well, the current HC status seems to be that everything in this thread is unavailable again. I still have my backup, does anything from the old archive need to be uploaded again?
Also, as far as collaborative modeling goes, just using Github might make sense for something like that. The branching system might work nicely for all the various aspects that go into creating a model and it has a lot of other builtin collaboration features. I still don't have time to do any PHP work for something like this though.
