Is there a site that will let you download skyboxes or a link to skyboxes that someone is willing to share? I haven't seen what a skybox is capable of yet and would like to see if it is worth trying to make my own.
Q: Do you use Truespace to create skyboxes?
Thx :D

With skybox, you get this:

rather than just nebulas and planets.
Skyboxes can be made in TS...I made mine in 3d studio max. Who cares about collision detection errors on export. You're never going to hit the edge anyway :P

Mighty fine Zeppelins you got there. :p
/me imagines a Crimson Skies FS2_Open project... :shaking:
-
Fine then, you can also do this:

Maybe there should be a thread like the weapons and models sections where people
can list/post skyboxes to share?
-
I'm all for that.... either a publicly available list of links to Skyboxes, or a skybox tutorial would be awesome.
-
Maybe there should be a section at FSMods devoted to skyboxes... :nervous:
-
I agree with that,i d like a tutorial about how to make skybox with 3ds max/truespace would be awesome
i saw how it was done for blue planet (the green one) with pcs2 but how to make one like atmos one is the great question for me!

Isn't that the pics from the 158th project? :wtf:
-
Bottom one is.
-
Huh. Command is finally in-mission.
-
I must have those skyboxes.. I must! They are beautifull!
EDIT: Isn't that my Orion Mk2 in the first pic? Re-textured?

Looks like it. I think it's trying to be the EACa Auriga, but failing.

Cool. Good to see screenshot taken by me here :D I mean 158th one ;)

F'course it's failing. It's like putting in a Rolls Royce to pose as a Dodge. :p

I've changed the remapping since.
It no longer looks that much like the Auriga. No more EA Textures.
-
The only reason mortals of HLP are seeing that screenshot, is because nearly everything in it has changed.
-
So what needs be done to get a skybox gallery/share going?

So what needs be done to get a skybox gallery/share going?
1) A number of people with skyboxes they are willing to share
2) A place to put them
-
We have number 2, but number 1 is in poor supply.
-
I have an idea... Filefront them all and post a link here. Then someone take all them links and make a list of all available skyboxes in the wiki.

IMO that kind of sxyboxes is damn cool, but...the textures might need upgrades. They should look better, seriously...and there are texturers able to do that. :)

It's not a matter of making the textures look better, it's that if you want a skysphere that is actually high resolution one, you need to use a pretty wide field of view to avoid blurring...
Example: Your screen has width of 1024 in pixels (yeah, I know it's a low resolution but bear with me). If your field of view is 90 degrees, your screen will fit 1/4th of the sphere circumference on it horizontally. That means that to avoid blurring, the texture resolution should be at least 4096 pixels for equator, meaning basically a 4096x2048 resolution texture.
If your field of view is 45 degrees, you will need a 8192x4096 resolution texture to avoid blurring.
To use a texture with 8192 dimension you need a relatively new GPU.
...and this is just using a 1024 pixels wide resolution. And not counting spherical distortions of high fields of view...
-
What I meant is that these textures aren't two or such months old. Many of them are pretty old and would require upgrades.
The res has its importance, no doubt on that. :)

Fair enough.
-
what's wrong with the textures? They look fine to me.
-
I think about long term gaming. They might look fine now, it doesn't mean you're going to keep your opinion about them. After a few gameplays you might find them a bit disturbing and ugly.
-
Nah, I don't think so. Good looking is good looking - now and in the future. Graphics in games (and in SCP) has already reached stellar heights. As far as I'm concerned no game has to go higher, ever, and I'd be perfectly happy.
-
I'm afraid you could change your mind...
And upgrades are always welcome...if we focus the attention of the textures on skyboxes we should get interesting results. :)
-
Well, upgrading needlessly is what has kept STR from release I hear.

I thought it was that voice acting takes a while so they decided to add some feature creep in the mean time.
