My old Geforce FX5500 spontaneously scorched itself. A Radeon 9600 LE took its place, and it runs Source-engine games great.
Problem: FreeSpace 2 and my new card do not like each other.
A quick check in the common errors thread found a match for this:

Solution 1:

Failed.
Solution 2:
(http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/6009/radeon9600002nh5.th.png) (http://img241.imageshack.us/my.php?image=radeon9600002nh5.png)(http://img241.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif) (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php)
I installed the latest drivers almost first thing after making sure the card functions without self-explosion.
I finally can achieve over 30 FPS in the Source Engine without staring at the sky.
FreeSpace 2 just throws that error (http://img125.imageshack.us/my.php?image=radeon9600000rg5.png).
I found I could start the game by switching to Direct3d in 3.6.9 but my mod requires newer features. No playtesting yet, but I doubt using a barely-supported video mode can be a good thing.
Help.

"Unable to get proper pixel format for OpenGL W32!"
* Make sure that you have (the newest) graphics card drivers and chipset drivers installed.
* Make sure that you're using 32-bit colours for both your desktop and the game itself (can be changed from the Launcher's Video tab).

Am I missing something here?

Hmm.. You could try getting new launcher 5.5c or later, getting fresh build. Then running debug and posting the log here (assuming it didn't help)

Got Launcher 5.5d. Tried two recent builds. No luck so far.
Here's the latest log:

First Homesick shouldn't even be in the FS2 directory.
Did you remove all the drivers for the old video card and take it out of the device manager?
-
In addition to Homesick, what is "mission_package.vp"? I don't think I've seen that before. Never mind, I think I found out. Still, mission_package.vp should also be in its own mod folder instead of \freespace2\.
GenericCorvette, do us a service: download and run GPU-Z (link in my signature), then tell us what it says. Actually, first it will say that the program is already up to date, but that's not what we want to know. Click Ok and take screencaptures of the GPU-Z window itself.
-
Also, for a card as old as the 9600...the latest are not the greatest. Google for the Catalyst 4.12 drivers (Softpedia should have a set). Architecture wise, they are the best that hardware is going to support. If you cannot find them, I will host them up for you.
Also, you can probably add "Enable Glow Maps" (-glow), "Enable Environment Maps" (-env). You wont (probably) be able to use "Enable Normal Maps" (-normal) however.
-
Mama's computer has a Radeon 9600 and it has worked sufficiently well with Cataclysm 8.something. Not the newest, maybe a few months old.
-
Try setting up the card within the retail launcher first. That was the solution I found when I recently upgraded to vista and pointed it at my old hard that stores FreeSpace SCP. I think it needs to set up registry details or something!
